Such romantic ideals.

I like that trump wants to protect Americans and ensure the wasteful spending (money laundering) is stopped). I have always said that wouldn’t complain about being taxed 50% on income, property taxed and sales taxes to death if we can see some, any benefit. But food bank usage is up. People are paycheque to paycheque and economy is is bad shape (that’s why interest rates are down and the usd vs cad is so far apart). Investment and brains leaving the country at a rapid pace. I wish our government would want to help us become more affluent. . Carney is literally wef/ Trudeau 2.0. I know I’m a conspiracy theorist, but we’ve been right over the last 4-5 years about it all.
Question: if carney is installed ( selected not elected) and delays the election that soooo many Canadians want, until 2026, Will you believe that the government is corrupt and we are in a tyrannical/ dictator state? If not, what will it take to convince you? Wake up please.
torontotablecpt oh and climate change… give me a fucking break

Haha yeah this one's on you comp. To be fair though, it's always a respectful disagreement with this group: In theory we should be calling each other names by now.
As a break from controversy, here is a dog photo. No way that can be politicized!
advocating for 51st state
Hell no. I think this whole fight vs Canada was a mistake on his part. Not because he can't win the fight - but because it was a bully move with zero diplomacy. He's picking on us while we are weak (weak economy, weak leadership), and at the most basic level it's a shitty thing to do to a neighbour / ally.
That said:
My original point, and first post in the thread, was that it's nothing compared to the damage done by our own Liberal party, and I think its hypocritical to focus on the orange man when we were silent (or worse: cheering) as we made ourselves vulnerable to it.
Intentionally hindering our energy sector, taxing us into submission, and nothing but high govt spending at zero ROI. Simply put, I think it's hypocritical that the people loudest on Trump destroying our economy were the ones who voted for Trudeau to destroy it. I think the calls for national unity don't land as hard when you only have to look back a few years to find examples of some of our most patriotic people being thrown to the wolves because they held "unacceptable views."
Then there's the element of what started all of this. He just said "fix the drugs and illegal immigrants coming over our border, and there will be no tariffs"... whether or not its a real issue, we had the opportunity to engage with this, but instead of even asking questions like "what would satisfy you, Mr Trump?" we went right to hardball. We will not win a trade war with the USA, it's as simple as that. Not that we should roll over - but Justin did not even pursue this line, knowing that the highly visible trade war would take the focus off of his own embarrassing track record and torched economy.
So maybe if we can call an election and put someone in that Trump respects more than Governor Blackface? No. Instead: he shuts down parliament and we are installing another globalist puppet, unelected this time, in his place.
This is what people voted for
3 times.
And this is what we get.
For the record, not one vote from me even when legal weed was involved. That should tell you how serious I am
PS Carbon Tax goes up 20% on April 1st... get your Canadian Flags ready guys.
Bfillmaff isnt the salary of all those 338 douchebags going up also on April 1st too. I mean the Governor General, who does f all, got a raise recently. Why not? All the 338, who work for us, can vote for their own salary increase. I mean what a racket.
and economy is is bad shape
I think there is a Canadian equivalent to the !HB work visa which was of recent controversy due to Elon Husk (totally not a Martian). The 'Temporary Foreign Worker' program where corpo's are abusing it. Mainly used for service industry. Has been expanding into white collar jobs. Have heard of people at Sun Life losing their jobs to workers overseas.
People are only making a fuss now that white collar jobs are being replaced.
A "corporation" will place a job advert at below market salary. Then after nobody applies. Which obviously who would work for less money than what is industry standard. They go to gov with application. "Hey look we cant find Canadians to do the job". Which part of the application process have to prove they already tried to find an employee here. Then the corpo imports employee from overseas. And pays them less.
Rome fell shorty after importing too many slaves. Vandals and Goths fuct shit up once they out numbered.
and economy is is bad shape
and brains leaving the country at a rapid pace.
I know I’m a conspiracy theorist, but we’ve been right over the last 4-5 years about it all.
There is no "conspiracy" it's simply GREED. The 'Brain Drain'(Canadians relocating to USA for better paying jobs) has been a problem since Avro. USA is an economic power house. Moving to where the pastures are greener is only natural.
I wish our government would want to help us become more affluent.
Government and corporations are in bed together and dont care about us. We are expendable work horses to them. Government lies to get in power then keep things business as usual. Catering policy to benefit corpo's not 'the poeple'(citizens) the constituents that elected them.
All any politico party cares about is getting re-elected.
Take DoFo he made many promises to get elected and didn't do diddly squat. Except institute policy that had direct benefits for his cronies. I regret not voting that that it matters ( https://youtu.be/SEH9SLG4X9E?si=FPbj86w4AB20nd0C ) but only like 30% of all Ontarian's voted. DoFO promised many things.
None of election promises are legally binding.
DoFo promised many things including new train to northern Ontario and new Highway 7 (between Guelph and Kitchener). Nothing but an empty promise to get re-elected. He's saying the same rhetoric this time around. We wont get fooled again? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NzLs-xSss0
DoFo is pushing to expand mining into 'ring of fire'(mineral rich area in northern Ontario). Pretending like it's a campaign promise. But it likely some backdoor deal with mining corpo's and he's making it seem like he's doing Ontarians a favour. While really filling his cronies pockets with tax payer subsidies.
Why should tax payers fund corporate expansions?
For example the $12million dollars of tax payer monies given to Loblaws. Loblaws is a thriving profitable corporation. IT SHOULD BE RECEIVING ZERO TAX PAYERS MONEY. It'd be interesting if people on the Loblaws board of directors have connections to politicians. That'd be gerrymandering?
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/loblaws-rebate-conservatives-1.5091753
If I remember correctly from CBC news reporting it's fairly common for people on corporate Boards of Directors to have close social connections to politicians. The so called or proverbial 'old boys club'.

Will you believe that the government is corrupt and we are in a tyrannical / dictator state?
From my point of view this society is more of a Corporate Fiefdom. Most are mere serfs. Did you know that cities are incorporated and run like a business? So municipal "government" workers are just another 'employee'. Being employed by the government merely means that is someones current "job". Albeit a unionized well payed one? Are you against unionized workers earning a living?
Will the ants rise up? Or get "woke", wake up, to what ? What's the alternative ?
"Many forms of Government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
“Diversity is fundamental to creating a thriving and successful financial sector that reflects Canadian values.”
Lol what? Your government at work.
Paywall...
I must admit, it's hard to find a news source on either side of the border that is truly neutral.
Can we talk about these retards booing the US national anthem in the US/Canada game last night??? Feel like we had the high ground until that moment... honestly we kind of deserved that loss. Does this mean we are a state now?
*whatever your take.. you will have to admit this is funny:
https://x.com/LangmanVince/status/1891100508112208347?t=ohu47fA7nxXXhxWZXg_YwA&s=19
I was listening closely and only heard a small smattering of booing right at the beginning of the US anthem, certainly not at the level we heard for earlier games vs US opponents. I agree it is not classy like we see ourselves as, but understandable. I think the 51st state comments are way more insulting, even though I know they are not serious and we shouldn't be taking the bait.
even though I know they are not serious and we shouldn't be taking the bait.
This is a good point. I don't think it's serious either - it's one part negotiating tactic and one part getting back at our weak PM for being publicly anti-Trump.
Worth remembering where the 51st state idea even came from too: Trump informed Justin about the tarriffs at dinner -> Justin says "but that's going to destroy us" -> Trump says "well you guys can become a state then." Which is a lot different than the "annexation" narrative being pushed to rile everybody up (to take focus off of our own govt's failures)
Good to hear it was only a few bad apples doing the booing. It was a bad look for us!
I do think you are putting too much blame on Trudeau as well, I am no fan of him either but he didn't start this. Trump is just taking advantage of Trudeau's "lame duck" status. I do not think much of our choices in leadership candidates at all, perhaps Singh is the best of a bad bunch but I could never vote NDP. Way to far "left" for me. However the terms left and right have really lost their meaning over the past decade or two.
At the moment I have "some" renewed faith in our current provincial leader Ford for his stance on this although I acknowledge he is only doing it to allow himself a chance at another mandate by calling a snap election.
I still think writing me in as the best candidate for both federal and provincial is our only hope. Never 'mind buck a beer", free beer (and weed) for all! All poker legalized, etc, etc. Don't worry I'll look after all my friends on here...
I'm pretty sure I'll never live long enough to see the "end" but my grandkids may and THAT concerns me.
That's an interesting perspective... can't say I agree with you there ... but I suppose that's no surprise either.
I do think you are putting too much blame on Trudeau as well, I am no fan of him either but he didn't start this. Trump is just taking advantage of Trudeau's "lame duck" status.
I think it's worse than that though. I think he started this thing indirectly, in that he weakened us to the point that these tariffs matter to us. And then I think he had incentive to let this play out. But again: my real problem with him goes well beyond the tariffs themselves. Canadians were struggling before they were announced, and I will not forgive him for selling us out - all for feel good policies that don't even work. (Is "Climate change™" solved, now that everyone is poor?) Fact is, our cost of living has doubled and this is really only the beginning of our pain. Believe the lame duck scenario doesn't apply either - as that all came well after the tariffs threat... and I really believe that anyone other than JT would have been able to navigate this thing with the USA without agitating them into doubling down on us.

This was surprising to read... personally I think Singh is a complete fraud. Absolute scum. But good on you for the hard no on the NDP, so we agree there. As for the party choices... The Liberals are still living off of their reputation as being in the middle... but make no mistake: We actually have two far-left parties, and that's a big part of the problem. There's some criticisms for Pierre too, but he's been consistent and has articulated the problems that need fixed. Best we got.
At the moment I have "some" renewed faith in our current provincial leader Ford for his stance on this although I acknowledge he is only doing it to allow himself a chance at another mandate by calling a snap election.
Credit for looking across the aisle, and I really want to agree here... but I don't share that optimism in Ford.... He wears the Conservative badge but he's just another puppet with no principles. I think he sucks.
I still think writing me in as the best candidate for both federal and provincial is our only hope. Never 'mind buck a beer", free beer (and weed) for all! All poker legalized, etc, etc. Don't worry I'll look after all my friends on here...
Now THIS is where we have full agreement! COMP 2025
I'm pretty sure I'll never live long enough to see the "end" but my grandkids may and THAT concerns me.
With ya... and that's why these discussions are important ... even though talking politics is pretty gross. I think most Canadians have been complacent and that's how we got here.
Re climate change, do you not believe that climate change is happening or just not believe that we (humans) are having a large effect on it?
I believe it is real and we have a significant effect, the amount that is a natural cycle and what is caused by us is debatable.
As for Pierre Poilievre, just something about him I don't like.. I have flipped back and forth from Conservative and Liberal as far as my vote goes over my adult life so many times I don't know whether I'm right or left, lol.. I think we need a couple of new, down to earth fresh leaders that care about the avg Joe (and Jill) but although I think some get into politics with good intentions, most run into entrenched brick walls and succumb to the graft offers. Back to Comp 2025!
A theme of mine in this thread has been "the left" hiding behind genuine causes, to implement incompetent and/or damaging policies.
That's my issue with Climate Change™
Not so much disagreeing with the problem itself - but strongly against the "solutions" to it that are being forced on us.
No idea what to believe as far as our impact is. If I were a gambling man () I'd bet they are exaggerated... but overall I do believe we should protect our environment. The question is about how much force is justified, and how much damage to the economy we will accept for that. I argue that it should be zero. Find another way.
Instead,
These extra taxes, increased prices, and overall pushback against our energy sector... are making people poor.
I understand one of the goals was to make energy more expensive in order to incentivize alternatives, to help the environment, and that "eventually" (date TBD) prices will come down.
I argue that even if it were something we could afford to do, it's not working, and I don't trust the people guiding it.
And we cannot afford it anyway.
That's how I feel about it... so for now: Drill Baby Drill!
*Feel free to use as energy platform for
COMP 25!
I think the obvious answer is every time Trump mentions the 51st state, we offer to add a province. Personally start with Alaska, Hawaii and Nevada. Why a Canadian politician hasn't suggested this I don't know.
Also long past time to stop playing anthems at sporting events. But where else can anyone stand up and express their disgust when our own politicians have been milquetoast at best. Where is the indignation? Remember when French President DeGaulle came to Canada and gave a speech mentioning a free Quebec and he promptly got his ass tossed out of the country? Long past time we stood up for ourselves.
I'll vote for anyone with some semblance of a backbone.
moose I think the obvious answer is every time Trump mentions the 51st state, we offer to add a province. Personally start with Alaska, Hawaii and Nevada. Why a Canadian politician hasn't suggested this I don't know.
Early in this thread I suggested we start offering this to different states, Then it was Coordinator suggesting Nevada first.. I kinda like the Hawaii idea, could become our new "Florida". Alaska, we have enough snow, especially the last couple of days.
