Improve my game

I really need to improve my poker game. Lately I have been playing real bad. This thread is going to help me get better, (I hope). So I'm going to set some rules and guidlines to follow.

1. I'm going to start with a BR of 100$.
2. Play only mtt's on Pokerstars.
3. Play only 1 game at a time. (No multi tabling yet)
4. Spend 2%-3% of B.R. per buy in.
5. Play only 1 tournament per night. (I work during the day)
-Play 2 tournaments on my days off
6. I will start posting hands that I'm not sure of to get help
from pfc members
7. Post my B.R. at the end of every tournament.

I would play more games at once but I think I should get better first. If you have any helpful comments feel free to post them.

This will start tonight at 4:15pm with the $2.20, 7.5k guarentee.

  • Good Rules but:

Don't play games when you're distracted / tired.

The last hand of every tourney is just as often insignificant as it it significant, put more weight on the "interesting" big decision hands.

Get some kind of HUD program like pokertracker.

That's my #1 rule these days

+1 to this, busting out doesn't suggest you played the hand incorrectly (thats a lesson for some in itself). Find hands where you are unsure of what to do.

The other points are great things to do, but none of them help you improve your game ^-^

If I were to suggest somewhere to start it would be looking at your preflop starting hands.....cut out all post flop study, and look at what hands you are opening from each position, which hands you should flat, and which hands you should raise.....

Most important that I see waaaay to much, is to not limp into pots when you are first in, ESPECIALLY ACES (not saying you do it).

I'm not the best here but lemme know if you need any help.
  • Piggypie do you use a HUD? If not I would highly recommend spending a little money on one once you win a bit. It pays for itself!!!
  • What does HUD mean?
  • Heads up display. It will display real time stats on your opponents. Search up poker tracker you can try it for free.
  • O.k. I will download it tonight. Thanks.
  • What does HUD mean?
A hud takes all the hands you see at the tables you are on and organizes them into stats that are displayed in a box over each player.

The program that displays the HUD will create a database of all the hands you play and see

Its tricky to set up but once its set up its really easy to use

Just the process of setting up your HUD program will make you a better poker player than all the other things you declared in your original post.
  • playing 1 tournament per day won't improve you much. it would take years for the varience to even out even in 180 mans. it's worth a try though
  • Gonna start with the 1k guarantee at 15:30, 2.25 euros buy in. Pokertracker is downloading now.
  • I should really use one of those pokertrackers
  • I wouldn't get too caught up with using a HUD

I play "blind" 85-90% of the time, even thought i have PT3, PT2 and HM2 lol.. i do turn the hud on when im mass tabling because I cant pay attention to every table

I would get so stats obsessed and I would out level myself

its only a useful tool if you know how to use it PROPERLY.

OP focus on playing ABC poker and assigning ranges to players, and watch the money steam roll in
  • 1st tourney: out in 71st place, 660 runners, 99 got paid
    Total profit: $2.07
    B.R.: $102.07

I thought I played alright in this tourney. I was pretty short stacked after the bubble. I got 6k up to 13k but lost to pocket 9's all in preflop with AJ suited. I had no questionable hands to post. Tomorrow night will be better I hope.
  • GG. ITM is always a positive start to any challenge. Just stay focused, even if its one tourney at a time.
  • Darb, link your videos here.

  • I'm gonna play the same one I played last night. 2.25 eoro's, 1k guarantee, 15:30 start. Time to kick some ass.
  • I should of known better, with his preflop raise. Playing one more, because I was out so fast. $2.20 7.5k guarantee. Last one of the night.

    This is a fold pre.

You're in middle-late position, and the guy UTG flats the immediately gets 4x raised. What do you do if UTG re-pops? Very common play with big PP. Further, given the fact you said you're playing again being out so soon, this was likely early in the game with little to no reads on the guy. Finally, going broke on TP decent kicker when you started the hand with an M of nearly 40 is REALLY bad. Like, TERRIBLE.

I know I can be an ass, but believe me, I am helping here. How do you lose nearly 90 BB's on one pair? That's WAY too much, and you were never in the driver's seat on this hand. You played it poorly at every point. Passively, and gained no more information than what he provided. To expand:

Preflop: He say "I have a strong hand and am not afraid of either the UTG limper or the people behind me". Your call fished no more information.

Flop: Could say "I hit my hand / it's better than the board" OR it could say "Go away and let me win". He bet most of the pot, by my math ~600 into ~800. Though I DO NOT THINK IT IS A GOOD PLAY - re-raising to see if QQ will go away would have been better than calling, but by far folding is still best.

Turn: Now he puts all his 6k in to win 2k? He's either saying "No seriously, dude, fuck off" or "Haha, suck my dick newb". Again, without reads and some context, impossible to say which. If you had raised the previous hand, he would have possible re-popped, or he flats, and maybe checks here. If you fold we're done last street, but your call puts you into this minimal information situation.

Piggypie - legit - it's when you play hands in this manner that makes his play of this hand +EV.

Going out here was terrible. But folding Pre flop? I don't see why that is so bad.. unless I misunderstand something... he did have a royal flush draw
