Thoughts on this Article Regarding Party doing Montreal Classic

Been thinking about how I wanted to write this months, then awhile back I got news that PartyPoker was going to step in and run a charity event.

This is posted on Poker Pro USA, Canada, Europe and Online sites:

Montreal PartyPoker Classic | Poker Pro Magazine

I was carefull in my wording, as I don't have a source to quote as of yet to confirm that the 30 players paid through FTP didn't get prizing.

I do now have statements in response to this, from one the old board members for Miriam event that is now on the board for the new event.

I'll leave it at that for now, appreciate any feedback.

  • I'm playing in the Montreal Classic next month, Canada’s biggest charity poker tournament, sponsored by PartyPoker with the charity prize pool going to the JTL-BRCA foundation for cancer research. It has nothing to do with the Miriam Foundation event last year sponsored by scummy Full Tilt Poker who screwed the event winners, just like it screwed other WSOP ME package winners and all FTP players. :rage:

Did the old board member confirm that FTP screwed the winners and/or the charity? Sharkscope.com is better than wsopdb.com in checking the victims' participation at the WSOP.

  • I have confirmation yes, that the players did get screwed and a statement/response from the current producer. However, there are things I am comfortable quoting and others I am not. I sent the response to be added to article. I have also contacted Miriam, who is supposed to return a statement and some point, but asked for time.

I realize these events are separate, though there are many of the original board involved and essentially, Party and those familiar have just taken the idea, identical format, time frame and structure, renamed it and it's a new event.

I am not looking to make party look bad in anyway, but I do like to see some accountability to players who support theses things.

Here is another example, and you know I think highly of you
Nash, but why is it COPC and the Kickoff series were both CPT events and now they are DFIC events? Same ideas, names, etc...so why the change?

Do you know where/how I can find the details of the Miriam/FTP tournaments, including number of players, rebuys and add-ons? I think last year players spent over $200,000 in rebuys/add-ons for Miriam in addition to their buy-ins (went to Ray Bitar & Lederer?), but got zero prizes from FTP, so I can see why the players would be upset. Are you or Lynne going to Montreal?

BTW, wat's DFIC & COPC? TYVM. TTYL. ;)
  • DFIC -> DeerFoot Inn & Casino

COPC -> Canadian Open Poker Championships

    Thanks DataMn for explaining abbreviations.

I did receive an invite to attend, but going to pass as family has other plans over same time. I doubt Lynne will be attending, as she had to miss Fallsview.

The info on the Miriam Foundation is at Montreal Poker, Miriam Foundation, Poker Montreal Open
It sold out last year at 1500 players, $275 entry for 5000 chips, $125 rebuys.

Anyways, the following response has been provided by Dan Vigderhous (who has been involved with the Le Windsor Charity events since their origin and is the producer and co-tournament director for this year. He also used to run Four Aces):

#1 "We are placing all the buy-ins into a trust account that cannot be legally touched until all prizes and expenses are paid. The charity will only be receiving the donation until all responsibilities are properly paid and taken care of."

#2 "Party Poker, obviously being an aboveboard online company (pulling out of the US market in 2006, and being a publically traded company in the UK) isn't faces with the same issues as FTP or Stars did. This is another level of security for the players getting paid"

#3 *** some omitted***30 players (from last year's Miriam Open)

"We have invited each of them as our VIP guests to this year's event."
  • Talked about this on pokerEH via Quadjacks, Eric did a great summary here:
Poker EH! Canadian Poker Radio feat Jon Harnish | QuadJacks Poker Radio Thursday February 9 2012 | Quadjacks | Poker Radio | Poker Videos

Have also found 2 finalists so far that are willing to talk to me about their stories, which confirm mine.
  • Another possible advantage of PartyPoker taking over sponsorship from FTP is that instead of Anti-Christ Jesus Ferguson and other FTP thieves making an appearance, it could be Kara Scott or the Royal Flush Girls. >:D

  • Kara said yesterday on twitter she will be here. What's a big tourney without models? Miriam had girls, sure that Party will too!

Beat! I showed my wife and she had her own ranking.
  • jontm, do you have a contact email address with the event organizers? I tried to register online, but it doesn't work and they don't even post an email address.

  • If they are the "Royal Flush" girls, why are there 6 of them?

    Models are so rigged . . .

I am assuming you have been looking here:

    Home

Kill the /mtlppc/ and you get Eventure which has a contact tab and e-mail form here: Eventure – Contact

If that doesn't get a response, can PM you a contact, I'll do that now.
  • I think "Cookie" is barking up the wrong tree viz. Miriam having to pay out. The article mentions FTP as being responsible for the prizing, no? If true, then relief has to come from FTP . . . and good luck with that.
  • He might not be; the article has the court docs hyperlinked, (though dry and lenghty worth a read) and in them their is a Quebec law quoted that says while you may involve third parties, you can not bind them. Cookie seems to indicate that since, as you mentioned, it is very unlikely FTP will pay, since the charity took in proceeds and FTP was a third party, they are responsible. There is a definetly a difference in opinions as to who the lead organiser is

    You planning to go BF?
  • To jontm (or Pokernews), do you know why Morden "Cookie" Lazarus chose the new charity as the Jodi Lazarus Fund for Hereditary Breast Cancer? Mrs. Jodi Lazarus lives in the same address as Morden so I assume that is his wife? Is the Jodi Lazarus Fund a registered charity, and are any of his relatives employed or benefiting from it? Has the name of the charity associated with the Montreal PartyPoker Classic been changed to JTL-BRCA to try to avoid the apparent conflict of interest?

I had thought FTP took the $412,500 in buy-ins while the Miriam Foundation got the rebuys and add-ons (~2,700 totalling ~$340K?), but it turns out that Miriam kept the entire $750K+. If Cookie is correct that "the law of Quebec, as contained in Article 1443 CCQ is very clear on this point" (see below), then Miriam should pay the 2011 winners from its $750K proceeds.

"1443. No person may bind anyone but himself and his heirs by a contract made in his own name, but he may promise in his own name that a third person will undertake to perform an obligation, and in that case he is liable to reparation for injury to the other contracting party if the third person does not undertake to perform the obligation as promised."

    finalists_2011.jpg

Miriam can then stand in line with the rest of FTP's victims in trying to recover $200K+.

I dunno now. I'm waiting for a legal opinion from the law firm of Angelique, Brittany, Danielle, Ivy, Jeannie & Tugba. >:D

  • I don't know the particulars about his charity; could be a sister, aunt, mother that was affected and prompted his interest in this cause for all I know. I do know that he is a very respected member of both the gaming and poker communities. He is one of the most respected lawyers in his field and has also represented major financial institutions. Google Lazarus Charbonneau, he sits in chairs on committees around the globe, the only Canadian in Nevada, American and Canadian Bar...

It's a tricky issue, and that's why I have so many questions. My son has autism and I was very pleased the Open did so well and Miriam does what it does

The event and game is enough of a crap shoot and I don't think winners need to gamble on getting paid too
  • Well, the first article posed some questions, the podcasts a little closer to the answers and it stired things up enough to actually get some usable sources...
which in the hands and experience of Chad Holloway turned into the most read article on PokerNews.com this week.

Seeing as the have a million plus page views a week and 4000+ sites linking in, quite satisfied that the players can at least be satisfied their situation is not brushed under the rug.

So moving on to the positive, the biggest charity tournaments in Canada will continue and learn from past oversights; thank you to those who did contribute thoughts in the thread
  • Another thing I'm surprised about is that Cookie admitted that poker tournaments cannot be licensed in Quebec. He managed to find a loophole in the Criminal Code such that this huge multi-day poker tournament with $200K in prizes and 1,500 players paying $750K was within the law!
