holdem tourny

I spoke to a few people about this last Friday night but thought I would post it on here also to get some feedback..
I am thinking about having a no limit touney here in Kitchener, not a regular monthy thing like we used to have but a one-off or semi-regular one. It would be the same format as the ones we used to throw at the club. BTW, this post is directed more towards the KW players and I assume most of you know the tourneys I am talking about...Anyway my questions are as follows, which day would be the best? Fridays and Sat nights seem to interfer with 2 local games, so that really only leaves Sundays.. We used to throw them on Sat's which worked well, would Sunday afternoons work as well do you think??If so what starting time? Would everyone be "pokered-out" by Sunday, or is pokered out and oxymoron (as prof seemed to think lol) Also what is the highest buy-in I could probably get before the number of players drop off. I would suggest 100$. We used to do 50$ and we got up to 3 tables of people..I bet the number would be even higher now since the poker family has grown since those days..I have room for up to 4 tables so I would want to make it as big as possible if it is a one off...Anyway this email is getting waay long so fire away.. getting 4 dealers now that is the REAL problem lol...

  • What about Saturday afternoons (like they were before), aiming to finish around 6:00 or 7:00? Then people could still play in the cash game Saturday evening after the tournament (in fact, it might even draw some extra players to the Saturday cash game).

If Jeremy ends up going with the last Saturday of each month for his new charity touraments, maybe you'd want to consider something like the 2nd Saturday of the month for these tournaments to spread them out.

Personally, I'd be more lilkely to be able to make it (though just occasionally) to a Saturday afternoon tournament on the weekends I am around the area. 8)

Let me know the detials if/when you get something like this going. I'd certainly be interested.

  • very excited @ the idea. I think Saturday afternoons would be peachy as well...just not too early because of poker the night before...maybe 2 ish :)
  • I am not familiar with the Kitchener tourny's but I would be interested in playing Sunday afternoons and I think $100 would be fine.
Are there regular tournaments in Kitchener? Are new players welcome? If so I would definitely be interested.. :)

  • As for the kitchener tourney,

If I do it yes new players are welcome of course....basically it would be a one off or semi regular (not interefing with the hold-em for charity weekend)
It would be a standard no limit tourney, usually we pay out the top 6 or so depending on the amount of people seems to me I remember that with 3 tables we paid out top 6 but if I deciede to do it I will have that all figured out before hand.. The house makes no money on the tourny all money is paid out (although sometimes some is allocated for the guys dealing it not much though) again all things I would work out before hand.. They were great fun and I would love to throw anaother one..Maybe in March. hmmm...
  • Rob:

Why not do it a week night to avoid the other games. My bi-weekly home tournament now has about 12-16 each game so is often two tables. The guys with kids like it because they come once the kids are in bed (we start around 8:30). Started as a one table even and now sometimes we are two tables.

Out of curiosity what time do your games finish and do you merge the 2 tables to one at some point?
My own home tourneys are starting to grow as well and I am almost at the two table point also..
  • We start between 8:15 and 8:30 usually ends around 11:30. We start with 800 in chips and 5/10 blinds. Blinds increase every 15 min and we move to no-limit when we get to 200/400 blinds I have a large holdem table that seats 12 comfortably so we consolidate when we get to 12.
  • I would be interested to know how many other peoples home games have grown recently.

When I started my game, I sometimes had trouble getting people, and every few weeks was 'too often'. I guess as we have gotten older, our wives/girlfriends don't need us home as much, because I now have a waiting list to get into a game, and when I asked someone a few days after the latest game when they want to play next, they said "how about tomorrow?"

A 12 person poker table? Like a casino table? Can you take a picture of this and post it please? I'm making my own table and I'm interested in seeing other designs/products.

    Thanks.
  • Very interested in $100 buy in tourney, can get others to come as well, let me know at Burly10@hotmail wehn you know more
