Yet another CNE trip report

So I decided to give the CNE game a try. I got on the list for 5/10 and 10/20 immediately and decided to hang out with the list guy while I waited so as not to miss my name getting called. He was pretty cool and we kept joking around about me bribing him to get seated immediately. Every time he'd call a name I'd say "cross him off he's not here" and we'd laugh.

Anyway, it took like 45 min to get seated. Turns out you can order hambugers at the table! My waitress was nice and we joked around a little. One guy asked the dealer for aces got them and won so I joking asked the dealer for aces. Next hand AA UTG. I open, get cold called, three bet, that gets called cold, I cap (obviously), everyones in. Flop J77 I bet 2 callers. Turn Q, I check (to c/r), checks and the three better says "I guess I'll bet". He obviously has a set of queens or jacks, I c/r anyway cause I'm an idiot, he three bets, I call. River a 2 I check and call and he shows QQ. Duh! So I try to bluff a few hands on tilt and it doesnt work, then I hit a couple and I'm about even. This one guy is doing a stupid dance every time he wins and he is really annoying. He flopped a set of queens with an ace on board, got called down by A7 and at the river said "You got an ace? No good!" shows his hand and does a dance. So a few hands later I cold call after he raises and another guy raises with Qh6h (obv. expert play), a few other callers. He leads out at the 642 flop, I raise, everyone folds, he three bets, I call. Turn is a queen he bets, I raise he calls. River is a 6, he checks, I bet, he calls. He says "I have a queen". I get back at him by saying "You have a queen? QUEEN NO GOOD" show my boat and do a little dance. The whole table bursts out laughing because he was such a jerk. He got his comeuppance. I go for a smoke and when I come back they call me for 10/20. I move on over and catch some good cards and bluff a few pots down. I floped AcKc10 with QJ in a 10 way raised pot, capped the flop against five people (2 got all in after 1 and 2 bets respectively) and got in a turn raise as well. The river came a club and it went check, check, I check (dumb move in a pot this size no one goes for a c/r) and this one girl who was all in on the flop for one bet had the flush, but I still win like $150 or something like that from the flop / turn action.

At one point an angry old man went to call the $10 preflop and I told him it had been raised and he told me to "play my own cards and mind my own business" which was fair I suppose. A few hands later I open raised, he three bet, three players called three cold (did I mention the games were good?) and another guy capped. I string called by putting in the $10 and then another $10 (to match the $30 and the cap) and he asked the dealer if I was allowed to go back to my stack to raise (thinking I did a string bet). I told him to "play his own cards and mind his own business" and he told me to "fvck off". It was pretty funny. After the game when I went to leave he was outside having a smoke and he told me he was out of line and I apologized for being a prick so it was nice that we made up like that.

So I ended up winning like $560 and $10 from blackjack. It was fun and the games are SOFT.

  • To all you CNE experts I think i'm going friday afternoon. Do you have to pay to get into the ex if your going to the casino? Where is the best spot to park. I want to get there right as they open so maximize my chances of a seat almost immediately.

    Thanx
  • Hey Joe,
You do have to pay for admission to the park as well as parking the first time you go. Representatives will walk around asking for people to sign up for the VIP program, play 3 hours and you get free admission and parking for the remainder of the season(September 4th). Too bad they don't refund that days admission and parking!

They open at 12, but if you arrive within the first hour they continue to open new tables based on demand.

    Good luck
  • I am also going there on Friday with my family. The most convenient parking is beside the Casino in the Better Living Centre near the Lakeshore Boulevard entrance. I got my VIP passes before the CNE opened when the VIP manager recognized the poker company jersey I was wearing and instantly approved my VIP membership without playing a single hand. :) In terms of the cheapest parking, you could try the Dufferin Street entrance where homeowners and private lots charge lower than the CNE and Ontario Place lots, but you have to walk longer to the Casino.

I plan to go to the CNE in the morning, drop off my family at Kids World with Doo-Doo the Clown, then sneak off to play with the clowns at the Casino! ;) As Doo-Doo the Clown would say, "UN-believable!"

  • Thanks guys. I'm extremely busy this week, but I am going to try and sneak out to play a few hands.
  • I went to the CNE on Friday.  The parking attendants asked for my free parking pass and admission, but did not ask for my child's ticket.  I gave my family a schedule of what to do at the CNE so I would know where to find them after I "quit while I was ahead" at the casino.

I asked what the waiting times were at the casino several times during the day and here they are:
    - 12:30 PM: only 10 minute waiting time, basically to wait for 11 players to open up a new table
    - 3:30 PM: 30 minutes
    - 9:30 PM: 1.5 hours.

It was the first time I have ever played Limit with real money.  I bought in for $300, but never needed more than $100.  After folding two hands before the river early on, I usually won in the few hands I played.  I was probably the tightest player in the table, but also the most aggressive when I did play.  There was a guy there who began playing like a raising maniac and put the other players on tilt, but I love those kind of players and took full advantage at the right situations.

In an early hand, I raised with :kh :qd .  With the Queen-high on board, I bet on the flop and 3-bet my remaining opponent on the turn.  When I bet again at the river, he threw his :kc :ks face up.  I thought he called but he had actually folded!  The other players in the table could not believe that he would not make the small call, and neither could I.  I love players who don't take math into account; he simply used his so-called "instincts" that I somehow got a set and that he should fold his overpair despite the 10:1 pot odds.

Anyway, when it was almost time to meet my family at "Doo Doo the Clown's Dance Party" show at Kids World, I cashed in my winnings.  After I answered the guy who had folded his winning overpair about why I was leaving, he said, "Doo Doo the Clown?  Hey, I know that guy!"

For those going to the CNE with family or non-gamblers, here are the best attractions for them to go to while you sneak a session at the casino:
    - Aerial Acrobatics & Ice Skating Show at Ricoh Coliseum
    - Cirque Envol circus (adult-only version at 9:30 PM)
    - Hynotist Mike Mandel
    - The Human Cannonball
    - If you have seen the SuperDogs Show before, you can skip it as it keeps getting worse every year.
    - For kids: Pizza Making Workshop with free pizza, Petting Zoo, and of course Doo Doo the Clown! :D
