Rules question

Two players after the river. Player A makes a bet and player B calls. Player A shows his/her hand and player B mucks his. Does player B have to show his hand if anybody else at the table wants to see it? Or even if player A wants to see it?

I thought that was true if everybody checked, and even then if you are not in the pot you cant ask to see mucked hand?

  • anyone can see it. Technically the player that called the bet can see it cuz he paid to see it.
  • No he doesnt have to show, at least not in most tournies. The better has to show his hand first. If the caller shows his hand first and its the winning hand, the better can muck his cards.

yes, that is what i thought too. What would be the rule on this at WSOP?
  • same thing I just stated.
  • At turning stone anyone can ask to see a hand if it's called on the river. The one dealer said to ensure your hand is mucked so no one can see it you have to throw it into the muck, not just fold it by throwing it in front of you face down.

No. You can ask to see the hand. If both players called the river you can see it. Again the opposition paid to see it.
  • If it gets to showdown, you can ask to see the losing hand. It's normally considered poor etiquette, but it is the right of any player to request to see it (even if they weren't involved in the pot).

    True.

Furthermore, you may also ask to see winning hands that are active and called (or that were doing the calling) at the showdown. This comes up rarely, but occasionally you get something like:

    Player A bets the river
    Player B calls
Player A says "You win" and mucks
Player B does not voluntarily show

Anyone at the table can ask to see the winning hand, i.e. Player B's. (Player A's losing hand may also be shown on request.)

Of course, a winning uncalled hand must not be shown (except under extraordinary circimstances, e.g. a request from a floorperson or TD).

If a river is checked around, then every active hand is treated as a "called hand" and may be requested shown by any player at the table.

  • yup, thanks for clearing that up.
  • I'm pretty sure it's the norm everywhere that if someone calls on the river, anyone can ask to see their hand (which is why you can look at mucked hands with online poker room software), but as beanie42 said this is considered bad poker etiquette.

I've actually seen verbal fights break out at the casino on three separate occasions because someone asked to see a losing hand that was folded.
