Chip denominations for a tourney and cash game set

So I am getting 1500 chips. This is my breakdown, since they will be denominated chips the quantities are important. I want to use them for a tourney set up similar to Zithals and also for cash side games. Let me know if you think I should make any adjustments:

Tourney:
400 $25
400 $100
200 $500
100 $1000

(Zithal uses a 12/12/5 chip startup)

Total 1100 chips, $250,000 face value

Cash: ($.25/.50 blinds and mostly $.50/1.00 limit poker)
200 $.25
100 $.50
75 $1
25 $5

Total 400 chips, $300 face value

I struggled with the $.50 chips, since they are not a real casino denomination but it bumps my face value from $275 (if I get 300 $.25) and gives me a bit more flexibility, plus then I am getting at least some of every denomination available.

Opinions appreciated as I have been waiting a very long time for these and I want to be fully satisfied with them.

$300 seems a bit low, and the .50 doesn't seem to make much sense to me. If you get an extra 50 .25, 25 $1, and 25 $5, I think you have more flexibility and also increase you face value to just over $400.
  • Do you really want to have 25c and 50c chips? I think you're fine with just 25c chips.

What I did when I bought 2000 chips for the KPS last winter was work out how many chips I would need to run a 40 player tourney + cash game / SNG. So my suggestion is to work out the numbers based on the max size of tourney you want to run.

One thing to keep in mind if you are using any of the same colours for tourney and cash game is to make it the low value chips that overlap... just a precaution... I'm sure it won't be a problem in KW though... or anywhere at $20 tourneys and 25c/50c games for that matter.

  • It would 32 max. It's not enough chips for 40 using Zithal's structure. The chips can't be used for both because they are denominated.
  • Remember to include chips you need for chipping up the lower denominations in tourneys.

    Edit: spelling
  • I would get rid of the 50C chips. Maybe even make them all $1.00. That would add more dollar value without sacrificing anything. My cash game denominated chips are 25C 1.00 and 5.00.
  • Looks good and I agree with everyone else that says to lose the 50c chips and add more to the $1 stack.

If you ever wanted to run a deep stack tourney, I use a 12/12/7/5 split which means, for 32 players you need 224 "500"'s and "160" 1000's (plus something for 5,000's in a tourny like this. I believe, I have close to 400/400/300/200 for the 25/100/500/1000 chips, which allows me to run 32 players for just about any starting chip count.

If it's not too expensive, (and you think you may grow), add 500 chips, getting 100 more of each of the 25, 100, 500, 1000 and new 5000 denomination. It's really over kill, but if it's not that much more, I say go for it! One of these days I'd love to sell the lot of chips I have and co-ordinate with a nice set.

Oh wait, that happen when stp wins Niagra and Haddon remodels my basement! Woohoo!!
  • ya, definitely switch the .50c for $1, $1 will be the most commonly used chip in a .25/.50 game, .25 chips will only be used for blinds mostly, at least in my experience.

I have over 3K chips total, to give you exact quantities I'd actually have to look. It's not been a problem tho.
