No Limit at Rama or Limit At THe Ex? Not what I expected

I read the post about No limit being spread at Rama.. first thought was " Wow" . I live in Port Perry, never played a hand of limit poker live ( 1cent 2cent online is the extent of my limit experience) so a 45 minute drive to Rama beats the hell out of the 2.5 hour drive to Niagara or even the 1.5 hour drive(traffic included) to play no limit at an underground in Toronto.

So I planned to go to Rama either friday night or saturday morning, I called my buddy who I planned to go to Rama and he explained how well he had done at the Exhibition and that it would be the best possible place to "get my feet wet" with limit poker. Living 5 minutes from a Casino hasn't caused me to play their cash games, but for some reason I was pretty excited to check out the EX.

We head down for 12 get on a table by 1. I've heard the lineups can be crazy, so it was wise to get there close to opening.
Our table was nuts for the first couple hours, almost insane. I didnt realise how much action these players were giving until later in the night I moved tables and saw how a"normal" limit table plays. I guess 5-6 handed "capped" preflop betting isnt normal for a limit game. I had a great run of cards and played decently. We're still trying to figure out what the odds of me making my Quads two hands in a row was, and 3 sets of Quads in one session overall. I don't know if I have a postive bias to limit poker based on 1 great session, but I do plan to play siginificantly more limit in the near future, especially at the EX. I cashed in for $240 and cashed out after 11 hours at $630, up $390.

After reading GTA's post the other day about "another No limit game" opening at Rama, I was really excited about the chance to play at Rama and scoffed at his pessimistic opinions about low limit No Limit. But after playing limit tonight I now see what I have been missing. Im not going to say limit is better than NL, but its different and in a good way. I think a majority of new poker players, including myself, start playing poker after watching NL tournaments on TV. This eventually creates a NL home game with some buddies, which eventually sparks an interest into Casino or underground play, which is predominately NL. I would like to balance my playing time between limit and no limit.

Anyways for anyone who has played only NL, check out a limit game even if its just once.

  • Checked out the 1-2 NL game at Rama tonight. Pretty soft game very similar to Niagara.
Although we had this annoying chick at our table that would play a few hands, complain about something then leave. She would return just as she was about to miss her second big blind(which would force her off the table). It's one thing to do this once or twice. I only played 3.5 hours at this table and she left minimum 6-7 times, for almost two full orbits. Basically an empty seat the whole game, except when shed come back, play one hand lose some money and then disapear. My new pet peeve, the habitual sit out artist.

As for the room, it was my first time playing poker at Rama. No War! anymore for me. It was very well run, waaaaaaaay better than Niagara. I guess communicating between dealers and the pitbosses does have its benefits.

It was nice to play a short session, only having to drive 45 minutes rather than 2.5 to Niagara does make me feel like I have to commit to a long stay.

Off to the Ex tomorrow for some more 5-10, Ill be there right around noon when they open.
  • It was very well run, waaaaaaaay better than Niagara....

What were your issues with Niagara? How often do you play there?
  • 13 Cards - My biggest issue with Niagara is the lack organization in the poker room. It seems to me that the dealers and pit bosses/managers running the poker room don't have a good system in place to keep the tables full. I've been there too many times where if youre at one of the poker tables furthest from the main desk, you're completely forgotten. That's why I prefer Seneca when I head to the Niagara falls area, their room is run better than any poker room I've played in Canada. Maybe it has something to do with the dealers keeping their own tips? But the reason I play at Niagara over Seneca is because I've found there to be worse players on the Canadian side of the falls. Now that Rama has added NL I don't plan on heading to Niagara anytime soon due to proximity.

I played at the EX today, the action was crazy yet again at the 5-10 tables. I am really pleased with limit hold'em and I have enjoyed playing my 1st two sessions. Hopefully the 5-10 games at GBH are profitable once the EX closes in 2 weeks.
  • Was she a youngish Asian chick? If so she has moved from Brantford to Rama.

    No, she was caucasian.

Funny though, when I showed up at the EX on sunday there she was playing 5-10!

She was always leaving. I figured her possibly for a chain smoker, but when she left she never headed out of the building... weird.
My guess is shes doing lines of nose candy in the ladies room..... but I could be wrong
  • Played No Limit at Rama yesterday(wednsday) and today. Played for about 6 hours between 2 days. Can't complain, probably because i came ahead but overall good experience.

Dealers were good and players were okay. Wednsday's game was kind of surprisingly tight but today was kind of crazy, everybody started to go all in so I just left. But i ended up doing well, cant believe how much better NL play is than playing limit. Although the only time i played limit was at Bay 101 in San Jose and hated it.
