Dave: Thoughts on playing against the only other chipstack that can bust you?

Just need some advice...

Playing the Friday Night Binion's Tourny...$125 + a bonus buy for .5 starting stack for $25 more.

15 left out of 60 some odd. I am second in chips by about 4000. Chip lead is two seats to my left.
I get dealt AhKh on the button, he is in the BB. Three limpers...blinds are 300/600 with a 50 ante.
I raise it 2400 to go, there was about 3000 in the pot. BB flat calls. All others fold. He checks dark.
Flop As Kc 4h. I bet the 5600. He goes all in. I have 8725 back. He ha me covered. I have him pegged as weak.
He is only chip lead because of a set over set on the flop that his inferior set quadded on the turn.
My read is he is weaker than me but can give him credit for some draws.

Now...do I fold and not mess with the chip lead, or what? Any advice would be great.

THE REST OF THE HAND BELOW IN WHITE:

I call.
He flips over QcJc.
Runner Runner clubs...
NEAT EH? :D
He has the balls to say, "Man, justice, you hit a straight flush against a nut flush and now I got lucky."
FACT: I flopped a straight flush on the BB with 6 limpers. I hate people.

  • If you are playing to win, get your chips in there!!
  • No offense Josh, but this is the most poorly disguised bad beat post I've ever seen.
  • No offence taken. It wasn't a bad beat post...I am over losing to runner runners. I just really want to know Dave's thoughts. I remember at KWGM2, Mario was second in chips, I was first and we got heavily involved in a hand. And everyone was commenting on why he got involved with the one guy at the table who could take him out. I haven't read much about this topic in articles or books...so I just wanted some advice.

But yes, it was a bad beat. But I'm not whining, I just want to improve.
  • Without peeking at hand result...

You have an M of just over ten. So you are in OK shape but this is a obviously a fast action tournament and you need to look for opportunities to get your chips in with the best of it. You are still a ways from the money and, more important, a ways from the top money (1 2 or 3).

I sprain my wrist getting my money into this pot.

Now to lool at the results...

OK. He is an idiot and you made the perfect play. You got all your chips in as a 9-1 favourite (about). That is collossal. Pat yourself on the back and go have a beer.

If you can get 9-1 I will not matter one bit if he has you covered or not. Take it. Every single time.
  • You're honestly asking if you fold AK on an AK4 rainbow board, to an 8k raise, when you already have 8k invested into a pot of roughly 19,000? Come on...
  • Despite your weird second-guessing, your first instinct seems to lead to correct poker decisions.  You should always be wary of a bigger stack, UNLESS you have a premium hand.  Having the fourth best hand in poker is a great reason to "attack the big stack."

The rainbow flop was super-dee-duper for you.  There are only three possible hands that could be better.  Against the big stack, you were a 81.8% favourite (8-to-2).  You were right that the big stack is a weak player.  He made a marginal decision calling your 1,600 raise out of position against the 2nd biggest stack with only a QJ ("but they're sooooooooted" :fish:).  He made a really bad decision re-raising you all-in after the flop with only a gut-shot straight draw.  Getting it all in with the best hand is what winning poker is all about, but unfortunately for you, bad beats are also part of poker.

  • For the reasons stated above, Sir Watts is right, this is a bad beat story...
  • i think the fact that he is doubting his play with TOP TWO PAIR makes the all-in raise not that bad of a play, seems to me that most hands will fold to "the only stack that can bust you" in a situation like this. It's possible he would fold AQ, AJ, etc. if he is doubting his call with AK. This of course assumes that OP is actually reflecting on his play and not just being results orientated.
