CNE Trip Report (Brief)

Monday night/early Tuesday morning -- I arrive at 2am and immediately get seated in a full 10 20 game.

The dealers at my table for the most part were not bad, speed was OK and not too many errors...much better than reports from poker playing friends. Certainly not as good as most underground dealers or 20 40 casino dealers, but certainly bareable.

Action filled game with HUGE fish -- capped 11 ways preflop a few times, 7 ways often. 3 betting 83s UTG +1, it's nirvana...why do they close it, can I picket for 24h poker?

THE BEST 10 20 game I have ever sat in, period. $800-$1000 pots not uncommon. If you are a good player with a suitable 10 20 bankroll and know how to effectively adjust your game, then this is certainly the best action in the GTA...highly recommended, two thumbs up, five stars, beddy beddy good...I will be playing there several times a week and forgoing 20 40 at GBH until the ex closes. If you can't beat this game then quit poker and take up stamp collecting with BBC.

Avoid the hot dogs, even starving at 430am they ain't yummy.

Good luck, let me know if you're going, Ill be there next late on Thursday night.

  • I found they have certain crazy periods at the Ex. I call them the 12am happy hour and the last call happy hour.....

I am glad to see I am not the only one that finds this the juciest game in the world. I know why we don't have a casino in toronto. Could you imagine this game on a daily basis, 365 days a year. You wouldn't need to work.

:D To those who have played the 5/10 limit, is it just as juicy? I hate the charity casino rules that prohibit no-limit hold'em, but maybe it's time to re-read my limit poker books. "Let's Go to the Ex!"
  • 10-20 raked or session?

I have gone for the past 7 years and nothing has changed, you put in the time and you'll walk away laughing. Just go in with a bankroll that can fluctuate and take the up and downs.
  • I visited the CNE Casino after I got two bad beats in a row in a cash tournament (but still made the money). Neither the dealers nor the players were as bad as I have read. I did get my VIP passes for free admission and parking at the CNE.
  • 10-20 raked or session?

    ???
  • It is 5% rake. I didn't notice anybody bothering to check if the dealer's calculation is correct.
    10-20 raked or session?
  • It's 5% Max rake $7.50 in the 5/10
    5% Max rake $10.00 in the 10/20

This is a pretty expensive rake compared to other places that have Max $4... or Max $5.

The place is a dump. If you like a smelly warehouse full of people with a welfare eye for clothes this is your venue.

One improvement over last year. I did not get the dealer who smelled so badly I vomited....

    The $7 hamburgers are garbage.
The $3 water is a rip off

Half the chairs are torture devices... your butt will be sore.

    The washrooms are putrid.
The water fountain had vomit in it.
  • The high rake is really irrelevant as the play is so poor. I am usually one to avoid highly-raked games, but I don't see the problemfor me in this setting.

I don't really care about the ambiance, I'm there to play poker not to admire my surroundings. The decor isn't any worse than most undergrounds.

The poor office chairs are the same as at any underground, the swivel chairs are much better than standard underground seating.

I notice that you didn't mention anything about the play, which is really the issue with choosing a game.

Yes, the food sucks and is overpriced, welcome to the ex.a

You had to pay for water while playing?
  • Yes, you do have to pay for water or other drink. I got my free unlimited parking and admission to the CNE and Ontario Place until September 4, so I am not complaining. Another good thing is that the separate poker room is air-conditioned. Now if only I can figure out the strategy differences between no limit and limit.... :fish:

  • Hey Blonde, let me know when you will be down again. I'll be there every free waking minute until Sept 4. The next free waking minute will likely be Monday.
  • might be down after work , roughly after 8:30pm , anyone else hit up the 10-20 around this time? always fun to have a friend neighbor shoot the sh!-t
  • If you're talking abount Monday night, I'll be there
  • This sounds like the Holy Grail of 10/20 games...

I'm going to check it out now for the first time this year. Why not. It's close. If it sucks (ie: if the fact that I'm playing 10/20 starts to drive me right up the wall) I'll just drive to Port Perry.

Maybe I'll see some of you there this afternoon, or tonight if I'm still there. I'm the guy with the shaved head, exactly half of which is sunburned.
  • Played the 5-10 game on Saturday night, went in with $260 played for about 4 hours and left $100 down.

Played on 1 table and was up just a bit over $100. Bunch of fish, around 5 to a flop on average. Then when they lost their money, new players joined the table, the play tightened up, but not enough to win with rags. Knowing there had to be a better table I switched tables. Hit rags for an hour and half on a table that was mostly tight, with a few extremely loose players. Tried bluffing at the tight players when I had my chance, luckily they showed me their cards so I feel I played alright. Never got in with a decent hand with the loose players and was blinded out of my winnings.

Will definatley make the trip again tomorrow, hopefully with better results.

Saw my co-worker there, who left $200 up after around 5 hours of play. He said his table was capped preflop with 5 players quite a few times. Hopefully I'll sit at that table next time.
  • Based on my limited experience there I would say that 12am-6am is the best time to play 10 20...I'll be there at that time tonight, anyone else?
  • well, tonight was the holy grail of 10/20 games for me.

    10 way capped preflop action.
5 way showdowns after a 3 bet on the river.
    bluffs calling down bluffs

In addition to which high pockets held up tonight.
my draws hit more often than usual.
the king of maniacs sat to my right - he was drunk and up $1000 from multi spot BJ.

    *sigh*

    It ended too soon.

My highlight of the night is SB with :jd :6d. Button (maniac) raises and I call $15. Big bling goes 3 bets - capped and I call. 9 way.

Flop - :9s :10h :qc - I checked, BB bets, capped somewhere in the middle - 6 callers.

Turn - magical :kd - I bet - 3 callers to the maniac who raises - at which point dude at the other end of the table (who called my bet) starts yelling at him - "what the F are you doing? What kind of play is that" (etc). Maniac goes nuts (more than usual) and security comes over to chill him out. Anyhow, I go 3 bets and I get 2 callers. Maniac included.

River - Brick. I bet, Maniac calls and I win $880 ($860 after tip, rake and coffee) with the lil straight. Maniac gets up in a huff and swears his way out the door. He had trip 9's.

The whole night was like that. My wait was only about 90 mins and I got there at 9 ish.

I wound up with $2K more in my pocket than when I started this evening (but today is going to be a write off though).

Hope to see some more forumites this evening.

    Hey York,

I got there at 1230am but the wait was insane so I went and played elsewhere...congrats on getting a seat in the softest 10 20 game ever...I'll be there Friday, let me know if you'll be there then.
  • tried to get into a game at 9pm, packed like a mofo, darn...... funny thing is, when i got my cne pass/parking, they said call a specific number to reserve in advance, i call and they say "we don't do that" crap!
