Anyone in Vegas play the satellites at Rio?

Arrived a day ago myself for the $1500 and the main event. Decided to give a satellite a try before buying in and although I won it was possibly the worst poker collectively I have seen a table play. Guys were raised UTG or UTG +1 with hands like Q 5 or J 7 and yet it still look 3 blind levels before the first person was eliminated. I basically tossed everything away til I got a hand and when I did (KK) three guys were ALLIN in front of me. This wasn't an isolated incident either as I watched a couple of friends give it a go and it was pretty much the same. The structure of these satellites aren't that bad (1000 starting chips and 15 minute blinds 25/25, 25/50, 50/100, 100/200, 150/300).

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience. Also anyone playing today (July 25th) in the $1500 NL event?

  • Hey Voodoo,

Not playing, but I'll be at the Rio possibly around 2PM if you want to get a beer.
If you aren't playing around then, post a place to meet and if I am online and see it, I'll be there.
  • I will be there around 11am or so, I am playing in the $1500 but will try and win a seat for a buddy as well in a satellite. Look for the guy with an blue Italia jacket. 6'2 in height.
  • Congratulations on winning that "bingo" satellite, Voodoo. I personally know at least one forum member who will be flying this week to play in the Main Event satellites. I know a couple more people who won seats to the Main Event and the $1,000 NL event in August.
  • Hey guys
Ill be in vegas on Thursday at around noon. Just wondering about the satellites, are the letting people sell the seats back to the Rio? Are there people hanging around that you can sell your seat to?

  • Thanks BF..  wish my result in the 1500 had gone better, roughly 2900 players and I busted out with around 700 players left when my KK were busted by AK,  although I did get to bust the Master out.

    Wader,

If you choose to play in one of the satellites and win you're given tournament chips and can sell them if you wish, there are always players willing to buy them.  Ex.  You play a single table 1060 satellite, the winner gets something like 20 - $500 tournament buyin chips. plus cash.  You can offer them up at a discounted price (475) and you'll get buyers, the cash offsets the hit you take on selling the chips cheaper.  Unless of course you find someone in the registration line willing to buy them at cost. Good luck if you play in one.

  • I heard the talk at the river room last night that you took out Men. I hope you then bought him a Corona :).

Nice showing, hopefully the ME goes better. You can only get your chips in when your ahead then hope it holds up. At least it wasn't low pockets that took you out.
  • Low pockets.. hahaha :D    Thanks.. cards were great early on given that in a matter of 8 hands I was dealt QQ 3 times and KK twice and flopped a set 4 out of the 5.  Unfortunately I couldn't get as much value out of them as I wished but my stack went from 1600 to 6500.  It was a great rush but I also knew that it would even out with a rash of cold cards.  Anyways I will catch up with you at the RiverRoom when I get back in a week or two.  Thanks for the kind words.
