Verbal warfare

Its a part of the game I have great difficulty understanding. I have searched for articles regarding topics such as talking players into a fold/call etc but I have come up empty handed.

I'm just curious how everyone reads into a players chat in a hand. Or, how/what you say to try to lead a player into the action you hope for.

Things such as "I'll show you if you fold", "I'll let you see one" etc etc.

  • The "I'll let you see one" constitutes a dead hand!! Well, in my game anyway.

The talk to try to get a player to fold or call, normally doesn't effect me too much for the most part. I still consider the hand in play, the odds of a call, what my opponent is likely to have given other tells from the game, so on and so on.
  • You're almost always better off to be quiet; talking gives off information and in many senses poker is a war of information. That being said, players who talk usually have a huge hand, so if your opponent is aware of this and thinks you are not you could probably induce a fold by chattering away.

I am normally really talkative at the table (esp. at casinos) in general so I attempt to maintain the same amount of chatter if I get involved in a hand; you don't want anything to change when you pick up a monster.
  • Find something that works for you. I don't talk too much during a hand but I am a talker by nature so I cannot adopt the pure "totem pole" style. I have to talk. At least some.
  • Talking only seems to work with biginner players, and for the most part will take into account you saying " I'll show you if you fold" They will be more likely to fold what they think is the best hand because if they call and make a mistake they lose, if they fold they get to see what would have been the correct decision.

Also talking trash gets people P-offed and will make them more likely to go after you in the futur.
  • Resort to witty banter, make them feel at ease, then nail'em with the hard questions!
  • watch video clips of Tony G.

    Nuff said.
  • Watch Sammy Farha as well...
His talking during a hand is awesome.
  • What works better in the long run, the nice guy banter (Negreanu) or the antics of Tony G.?
  • I would say Danny N. But that doesn't mean Tony G. isn't successful at getting better players off their game and using it to his advantage
