WPT at Niagra

I am attempting to qualify for the WPT event at Niagra in October. I know Paradise is running $200 satellites ($5 sub-satellites) where 1 in 60 get seats. Does anyone know of other sites that are running satelites? Or local casinos in Ontario? Perhaps Casino Windsor or Point Edward.

  • Off topic sorry, just wondering Troy, did you play in the Party Poker Canadian Championship?
  • I was railbirding the $200 sat last night and the play was pretty weak.

The $5 is a rebuy/allin fest. I think they had 60 players with 40+ rebuys.

  • Yes Chris, I finished 4th in the poorly promoted CPC. I think four people watched the show. Me, Dave Scharf, and two eskimos.

Hobbes, I played in the $200 satellite on Monday and I agree, there are some very weak players, but some solid players as well. I made it pretty deep but made a mistake. It just sucks to plunk down $200 for a 1 in 60 chance. I would rather play a $500 tournament for better odds. I agree the $5 satellites are a joke. I was chip leader with 20 people left and my stack was still less than 10 times the big blind.
  • Ya i used to watch it on Global T.V here in Otawa, and it was recently added to the CGTV line up, so i'm sure you and Dave will get more plubicity now :)

BTW I have to ask wtf was with that check when you had a full hous 8's full of 9s?!?!?!

P.S GJ getting the first penatly :) Also, were you drinking or something? I heard Dave say something about a Schmirnoff Haze?
  • Ahh the 8-9 full house hand. I got so much shhiitt from the Captain Tom Franklin about that hand and Dave. (ps the audio sucks so bad on the show). I don't even know why the gave us microphones.

Anyways, if I recall I had 8-9 in the small blind. Guy raises under the gun. I call. Flop comes A-8-9. Yipppee. I check, he bets, I check-raise. All this is pretty normal. Instead of folding or calling, he re-raises me. At this point, I'm like holy crap could he really have aces. I just call. Turn comes a 9. Full house. But if he does have Aces, I'm still beat. I check, he bets, I call. River blank. Check, Check.

I understand I played it VERY VERY conservative, but I actually thought he may have aces and happilly took down a good size pot. Another thing, it was my first major live tournament. I tried to play very conservative post-flop most of the first day (that was only the second level of the tourney).

The penalty was was great. I called it a 10-minute misconduct for the canadians viewers at home. Basically, I was in the SB with KQ suited. The BB was a short stack female who was whining that I was stealing her blinds all day. Of course it folds around to me. I raise, but show the cards to the guys on my right and say "hey I have a legitimate hand". Tournament director comes over sends me to the rail for 10 minutes. The camera comes shortly thereafter. Again, first major tournament. I played like I was in my basement with my buddies.

And yes, I broke the cardinal rule and had a couple vodka tonics at the table. Every body was so stiff, I was trying to loosen up the table.

Anyways, Time of my life. I'm back to work and in the real world. By the way, I saw some bad beat post. I took mine in that tourney when my AQ lost to A4. Cost me at least 10K.
  • Ya Dave thought you were thinking he had aces as well... but still c'mon :)

Ya the audio was terrible, i couldn't hear anything you guys were saying.

You played quite well though :) Lot of loose play in that tourny.

Just wondering, do you by any chance know how TJ Cloutier went out so early in that tournament?
  • TJ was just like he is on tv. Just a tough grump. Very big guy. Not fat big, just a big man. His wife was a very nice lady. I don't remember the hand he went out on, but I think he was pushing a decent hand like top pair into a set or two pair. Not positive though.

There were a ton of online qualifiers. Therefore, you had some bad..loose players who got lucky to win their seat (I could fit into that category so could Chris the guy who won it) and then some exceptional online players who play for a living.

While I am clearly at this point in my career just a slightly above-average low stakes player, not cut out for the big time, I had won Party Poker's Super Friday prior to winning my seat to the CPC. I also came pretty close to making Paradise's live final table in the main event of their Masters Series (around 25th out of 1100).

So I am not a complete hack....but still lots of room for improvement.

Back to the original post though, are there other sites that have good WPT qualifiers? I only have accounts with Party and Paradise.
