Stars 20K win Hand History/Analysis

It was the $162 nightly tournament on Stars with 500+ players. The easiest way to look at it this is to register at www.pokerxfactor.com (completely free and only takes a few seconds) then login and click on the following link to view it in their flash handhihstory replayer (thanks to Irah for posting this). http://www.pokerxfactor.com/servlet/pxf?a=mv&t=myhand2&handid=16120&fn=2971_20060716_031935. However I've also analyzed most of the key hands so you can read my comments as you go.

The first hand I played was #22:

I've started mixing in some raises with hands like this when the stacks are fairly deep, even from EP, just to mix things up a bit. I'm obviously hoping to hit the board hard and win a big pot with my disguised hand or just represent something big and take the pot down preflop or on the flop. Only the BB calls and I flop a gutter to the nuts and fire a standrard cont. bet hoping to just win it right there, but he calls. I turn the nuts and I have no idea what he's thinking here. Yes, there is still some dead money even in these bigger tournaments.

I make a standard raise and cont bet then call his minraise because I didn't really believe him yet (he wasn't the brightest player it seemed). When he checks the turn I think I'm probably ahead, though checking is a good play if he has the A, and then luckily I catch the 7 which makes my river decision a lot easier. I'm not sure I can call otherwise but the overbet certainly looks like air.

Standard raise preflop and I decide to cont bet the flop hoping to just take it down and give up if I meet resistance. If I was stronger with say KK or QQ I probably check behind but here there are too many turn cards I hate so I just cont bet. When he calls I'm probably giving up until I river good again.

I take a flop once Murphy calls hoping to get lucky.  This hand is mainly included because AB makes a really nice calldown and to emphasize that there is dead money in these things. I get moved to TwistedEcho's (another 2+2er) table.

I call hoping to flop a set and stack his monster. I have a theory that 2xBB preflop raises rarely contain an A unless they contain 2 so I stab at the pot. Oops.

I've tried mixing this in sometimes when I haven't been very active and a raise is unlikely to get action and if their stack isn't very deep, since they're more likely to try a move preflop, and if they happen to catch a lucky flop the damage won't be too bad.

Maybe I should have cont bet trying to represent AK here. I figured he had a pretty strong hand caliing my EP raise though and decided against it. I think I should probably bet the turn since a mid pocket pair seems like a likely holding. Thoughts on this one appreciated. Anyways, score a few table image points I guess.

I reraised him last time so I decide to just call and play a flop because the stack sizes suck for restealing anyways and my hand is pretty marginal. Normally I just call the flop bet but here the board is pretty draw heavy so I don't want to give him free cards. I couldn't see myself folding to a 3-bet if I make a normal raise because of all the draws out there so I just shoved. If he's got me so be it and it looks like a semibluff so I guess he could go for a big call with a worse hand or something though it's unlikely.

retty standard. I was a little concerned sub was trapping by just calling but really he has too many chips to just iso push with a marginal hand so his range is pretty big there since he's smart enough to know that desperation push could be almost anything.

Even us weak-tighties steal sometimes. I think we were within 10 or 20 from the bubble so I figured that might help a little but really I had chips and a decent table image so why not.

I love trying to bubble. OK so I'm getting 2:1 and this guy has already restolen me once. He moved in pretty fast and in this case I thought that showed some weakness. I doubt this call is correct 2 from the bubble but I'd love some comments on this one. I river good again.

I thought this was a pretty obvious call at first but he's not super short and he'd pushed the hand before so it's more likely he's hoping to get called this time with a strong hand. I think it's still a call but it might be kinda close.

Weird hand. He instachecked the flop and turn which I generally find is a sign of strength. He makes a fairly large river bet and I decide to just fold despite pairing my ten. He's certainly capable of bluffing here but I went with my "read" for whatever it's worth.

I mix in a random raise hoping my stack gets me respect and since I've been somehwat quiet. I should probably bet this flop I think but I hate getting checkraised off a small piece and if I improve and he has something I can win a nice pot. Anyways no more free cards on the turn.

Nearing the final table bubble this seems a good time to steal. I check behind the flop for deception and to control pot size. I'd hate to get checkraised off my hand by a semi-bluff. Obviously I can't just let another heart come off for free after the turn so I bet.

This was a BIG hand. My reraise preflop is a little too big maybe but I didn't want to play a flop out of position. Anyways when BrooDogg comes over the top I put him on {AA-JJ, AK} at worst and so it's a pretty easy call getting about 2:1.

I decide to defend because the raise is small and I have an ok hand. I check the flop planning to call a bet but he checks behind. I hit trips on the turn and just bet out about half the pot. He raises me, maybe just putting me on a bluff, and I move in since there's draws out there. If he flopped a monster he's gonna double through me no way around it.

OK this is a big hand where I get a little creative. Standard raise and I get 2 callers. I check behind the flop planning to go for a delayed continuation bet if they check it to me again. The turn brings a 2nd flush draw and CK bets about 2/3 the pot. CK is very aggressive. I think his range here consists of either flush draw, most pocket pairs, some air, or a king. With the 2 flush draws on board betting out with a king here is a perfectly reasonable play, but I felt there was a good chance he's play a king more trappily here and either bet smaller or check again. Also, my check behind on the flop then raise the turn screams that I have a king, and while I've stolen a lot of pots that no one showed any interest in when someone else made a move at a pot I'd folded almost every time except for the couple times I had a hand. So given that he's a pretty good player and can lay down a hand I thought he'd have a hard time calling me with less than a king here. He folded pretty quickly, whew.

I figure his range has to be fairly wide here and another great river card.

OK this is long enough already and i don't want to analyze every HU hand. Basically, he was playing very weaktight, folding to my 2.5xBB preflop raises regularly and letting me steal all small pots when he missed. He didn't even cont bet after raising when he missed on ragged flops several times. My plan was to chop away stealing everything I could and grind him down. I'll look at a couple of the more interesting hands though.

I just call preflop because his raises seemed to actually mean something. Then I decide to float him on the flop because it's hard to put me on any reasonable hand other than a queen on that board and I'm pretty sure the way he's been playing he'll give up if he doesn't have one. The turn isn't a great card but he checks as I suspected and I take it on the river.

Pretty easy fold, he said he had AK.
Can you explain the factors that made this fold 'easy'? I noticed other hands that you were willing to call all-in with that seemed to be 'weaker' hands.
  • Here I raised UTG and a good (and also tight) player reraises me. He knows I'm only raising very strong hands from up front but he still comes over the top, so his range is probably like QQ or bigger and AK, maybe JJ. Also, he has plenty of chips and is in no situation to do anything deperate. Finally, I'm not even getting very good pot odds.
  • Thanks for posting this info, it was a great help! Helped refine some of the problems I was having with no being aggressive enough in spots. Been a couple months little bit since my last runner-up in the Stars 180 SnG, and had I not made a mistake heads-up, I probably would have won it.

    Congratulations!
    Thank you for participating.
  • I realize you say that the calls you made, and lost, with KQ were pretty standard and possibly due to 'having odds' (Hand 200 jumps out to me). I find myself folding this hand more often then not to raises, it's like AJ to me a hand that you can raise with but not call a raise with. It's, as you know, dominated by so many hands that a typical re-raiser will hold. Is this generally a profitable hand for you? Thanks for the HH, very insightful.

    stp
  • I know I'm behind his range when he reraises me but his stack is short enough that he's probably making that bet with a lot of hands in hand 200.

    equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
    Hand 1: 33.9217 % 33.57% 00.35% { KdQs }
    Hand 2: 66.0783 % 65.73% 00.35% { 77+, AJs+, AJo+ }

I'm about breakeven against the above range (which I think are all easy pushes for him) and if his range is any looser it becomes a profitable call. My raise is from late enough position that he could think I'm on a steal and be reraising me light, especially since his raise is big enough that I could get away from some marginal hands.
  • hey mike, excellent play.

i find myself rail-birding you alot when i'm playing on stars, and have found you to be a really tight player early on. I was with my buddy steve (andros099) when you and him were both on the bubble to a $11 + R Omaha tourney. when you gathered enough chips and got deep enough, i noticed your aggressivness increase. reading all your hands on the final table and HU i notice alot of moves with super-weak hands. Great play mike!

    Johnny
  • lol yeah I remember that Omaha tourney. That was not pretty, all I remember thinking is "It's friggin Omaha, how big a dog can I possibly be? Oh." In Holdem I'm a pretty tight player though I recognize the situations in tournaments where it's better to play loose. There were a couple plays at the final table that I'm not really sure where they came from. Probably because i was only playing one table at that point and had been running good I had the confidence to follow through on some reads, and was lucky not to run into a hand at the wrong time.
  • exactly, whenever i look you up you always seem to have 3 or 4 tables going of all high buy-in MTT's

fun to watch you when you're doing that.

wonder how many FPPs you have roughly?

    johnny
  • I have about 21K right now, though I've burnt through a lot of them on some books and a buy-in to the $530 Sunday tournament one month.
  • Congradulations, well played on most of them and you flip coins like a pro :P
  • Wow. This is great stuff to read through carefully. Good of you to post all that, ty. I'm sure getting a response is a long shot.., but I missed where you doubled up between hand 201 and 220?

I'm curious if you thought about just calling on hand 323, given the stack sizes and the stage of the trny? Or is that just way too weak of a play?

    Cheers.
  • On hand 213 the button raises 3xBB to 3K and I shove 10K with A5o and hold vs his K8s. I guess I prboably thought he was a pretty aggressive player. Hand 323 was crazy, calling is really weak imo because the hand is going to be really hard to play out of position postflop. I really just wanted to take the hand down preflop so I put in a much bigger reraise than I normally would/should. As it turned out it worked fine because I pot-committed myself against BrooDogg's push and luckboxed the flip, whereas if I made a normal reraise it would be a really close decision and I think I would have had to fold (too lazy to redo the math but I put him on JJ+, AK). As much as it seems like a donk play, in retrospect I probably should have just shoved in over the original raise and put the decision to them, because I really doubt they were ever going to rebluff me as they were both on the tight side, and as we were all big stacks I'd much prefer to just win it right there then get in a big confrontation (and I'm losing all my money to KK/AA no matter what).
  • sirwatt
like to thank you for posting this.
reading it, i definely improve my games.

    thanks
  • Congrats on the win, that's awesome!

I haven't read all the hands; I likely will later. I will say your AQ laydown against Twisted Echo is definitely a good one. You are owned there against him.

  • I just read back through my analysis (this is bumped from July last year). I'm surprised there's a lot of hands I'd play differently, though for the most part I still agree with most of my analysis. It's also interesting that I've met so many of the people I played against in this tournament. First I noticed I called Andy Mcleod a fish, and he's been one of the most successful tournament players the last month or 2 lol. Good read me. I've met aaronbeen several times and twistedecho at PCA. jcamby33 is now known as one of the top tournament players online, Daut44 who is in a couple of the hand histories is Ryan Daut, who recently won the PCA in January. A lot can change in 6 months I guess.

I think I have the hand history from my 100 rebuy win 2 months ago uploaded on PXF somewhere if people are interested in that. I didn't write up any analysis of that one though and I actually think I played kinda bad at times, but it'd prboably make for interesting discussion. Let me know if anyone is interested and I'll see if I can find the link.
  • Hand 457 makes me all nipple-y.
  • lol I spent so long reading this that I logged me out of the forums. I understand your AQ fold, although that type of fold still doesn't come "easy" to me just yet :) I have to say thank you for calling that 3 bet all in with AK, i've seen to many people fold in that situation in live televised tournies only to have had knocked out 2 players or triple up in key situations vs QQ JJ or when he's midle position and folds only to have the guy behind him fold as well. Anyways, I'm a little surprised at your fold wit the pair of 10s on the river. I understand your logic but it was 5k with like 11k bot right? and you had tons of chips, wasnt it worth calling even if he was slow playing a monster? I thought information like that would be valuable. Finally your K high heads up call doesn't strike me as that bad of a call. The only reason I could see not calling is the guy didnt seem very strong heads up and might not have been liekly bet a K or Q high.

    Anways, nice win, congrats.
  • Whatever you have time to post, I'd like to read through when I have the time. The analysis was a huge part of why I picked up a few things here.

What about the recent win? It sounds like maybe you had to negociate your way through a lot more weaker players than at the stars trny posted above. Some of us reading here are used to playing against weaker fields ( 24+2, myself) and rarely cashing. Your thought process against a weaker field and how you've determined who's strong, who's weak and what moves you can make on whom etc..would be a great read. I wouldn't ask or expect that you would spend hours of your time doing this, but what the hell, just throwing it out there.

    Cheers.
