Mistakes -- there is hope!

Just finished reading most of Greenstien's book (Ace on the River) -- awesome read!  One tidbit I found particularly interesting was a one-liner where he says he makes about 20 mistakes per session -- some that cost him pots, and others that make him lose more than expected.  I usually beat myself up over mistakes in a session, especially in losing sessins.  However, if someone like Barry still makes 20 mistakes per session, it's obvious that one will always make mistakes**.

Nothing too inspiring, but thought I would share.

Cheers

** Knowing this, I have hope that I will never hit a peak and can always improve.

  • I think we all make mistakes, some more than others. You are 100% correct it is a great read. I think you need to already be a relatively good poker player to make heads or tails out of it.

Actually the one liner that stands out in his book (to me) is the quote by Edison which states" I haven't failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work". I"m at work so I may have misquoted it but I think everyone gets the drift.

I think his way of explaining what he intuitively seems to know is great.
  • All poker players make mistakes....bad reads, bad calls, bad timing and so.

The real skill is to recognize when you made a mistake and try to learn from it.
  • I was at a conference in Kitchener awhile back, and one of the keynote speakers was making a similiar reference. I'm somewhat paraphrasing here, but this is the essence of his talk:

When we are young, we make mistakes, and we learn from them.

As we get older, we are PUNISHED for making mistakes, so we tend to avoid situations where we make mistakes.

In doing so, we quite ironically, STOP LEARNING.

Making mistakes is natural to the process of learning and improvement, and without them, we would never reach the level of perfection we all seek in everything in our lives. In order to improve in ANYTHING, we need to make mistakes, learn from them, and improve performance will follow as a natural occurrence.

What stops this flow from occuring however, is all the negative feedback and negative emotions connected to making mistakes. They are often considered as failures, and no one like to be called a failure, so we tend to stop trying.

Lets just say I wanted to hug you when you turned over 73!  I still wanted to hug you when I lost -- I was just angry at the result.  I know you'll always be there for me when I need da chips.  I may not get them, but it won't be because of the odds. Either way it will be fun.

Remember he prides himself on making the donk calls and donking out. Your dominated you say, he just looks and says I'll hit the 3, 6 8 or whatever (because it won't be a high card. And for some reason he will.
