  • Saw that on the news...hope it's not going happen often.

I get the feeling they (police) like it less when it's a bar running a game. Not like the poker clubs around here. I hope so anyways.

  • Just remember one thing.....RAKE.

It wasn't mentioned in the article, but I would assume the bar was most likely taking a rake of some sort. What I found interesting though was the part about even CHARITY games are on their radar.

The typical home game though, would still be safe I suspect.
  • I'm not sure about that. I tried to run a RAKE free game in a restaurant/bar and it was stopped. I don't think the rake thing has anything to do with it. It has to do with $$$$$. If someone is making some coin then they are going to watch it.. Even if it's over 60 people having a beer.
  • From what I've been told and understand of the law, it IS Illegal to hold a poker tournament in a bar, regardless of rake. The bar is 'gaining' from having people come into the bar because of the poker. "Gain" does not have to be financial gain but in most cases it is, people typically buy food and drinks at the bars....

I'm not sure why more bar tournaments haven't been shut down up to now.

  • Of the 48 people arrested, three have been charged with keeping a common gaming house: Kelly Hale, 38; Scott Perrett, 37; and Ryan Richardson, 27.

I'm pretty sure I went to high school with this guy... WOW!!

This is dead-on correct... and the reason there are no games in any bars in Ottawa... the police warned them all about a year ago to stop, or they would be charged... so they stopped having them... That said, in Cornwall, you can still play in the bars... I guess the police are too busy here with other things.
  • My browser freezes whenever I try to access that site.  Can somebody please cut and post the article?  Thanks. :)

    Local news - Thursday, June 22, 2006 @ 12:00

Ontario Provincial Police broke up an alleged illegal card game at a west-end bar last night, making over 50 arrests and ending a six-month investigation into unlawful activities at the establishment.

At around 8 last night, members of the Ontario Provincial Police's Illegal Gambling Unit, a wing of the force's organized crime section, raided Jakk Tuesdays Sports Pub on Progress Avenue, just off Gardiners Road in a strip mall, while a game of poker was being played.

Provincial police and members of Kingston's police force encountered no resistance when they walked in to execute a warrant.
Officers walked out with six Texas Hold'em card tables and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Outside the building, a few people who had been inside when the bust took place walked around in the midst of the circling mosquitoes, swatting at them while laughing in shock at what had gone on.

All declined to speak on the record.

Of the 48 people arrested, three have been charged with keeping a common gaming house: Kelly Hale, 38; Scott Perrett, 37; and Ryan Richardson, 27.

Hale is the owner of the pub, Perrett and Richardson employees, said OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae.

The three Kingston men and the other 48 people arrested have been released for the time being, but will be in provincial court in August and September.

The investigation began six months ago after police received complaints about an illegal card game taking place at Jakk Tuesdays, Rae said.

Although she wouldn't say if police went undercover into the game, she said officers had to collect evidence in order to get the search warrant.

She said it is illegal to operate a card game without a licence, even if it is a charity event.

The Illegal Gambling Unit is regularly conducting investigations, Rae said.

She wouldn't say if there were any other investigations going on in the City of Kingston.

"There's always ongoing investigations somewhere, it's just where," she said. "The Illegal Gambling Unit works all through the year."

I think this is the key. Someone got pissed at the bar and reported it to the police.

Hard to believe this still happens...

I'm thinking there also has to be money involved. You'll see lots of free tourneys with gifts rather than cash as prizes. Although, that big one Joe one at the Docks was cash. But no buy-in.
  • Thanks.  There was supposed to be a poker fundraiser on Monday at that pub, but all the information below has now been replaced by "This event has been CANCELLED."  For a pub having illegal cash tournaments, I'm surprised they would advertise their weekly game on their website.  :(

I'm surprised that the illegal poker clubs with their high rakes have not been raided yet.

    Let's see.... 48 players at $40 = $1920

That payout is quite abit less
  • I'LL SAY!!! Less than 50% payout?? No wonder someone complained.

    no kidding.

I think these guys were raising a grand a week for themselves. And for god sake if not rule number one, at least rule number two should be

"when operating an illegal card game, don't accept cheques"

    Cheers
  • What kind of punishments do these charges carry? I assume running the gaming house is much more sevre than playing in one?
  • While it is a fund raiser, that kind of payout is incredible. Basically 1K is being taken out. More is coming out than going back to the players. I'm not surprised they got complaints then.
  • I have not heard much else about this , it is a criminal offence however.
I did hear that there was a list of people who played regularly , but where not there and that they are being charged as well . Seems heavy handed to me.
  • Having lived in Kingston, they are known for being heavy handed. They will call you to there vehicle while your sitting on your steps having a beer then charge you with liquor out of residence if you walk to the cruiser carrying your beer. Them being over zealous doesn't surprise me a bit.
  • Here are a couple of news links:

  • I wonder if the under-cover cops got to keep their winnings.

LOL that would imply they actually know how to play. Most morality cops I've seen couldn't cut for high card without asking for the rules.
  • Taking more than 50% of the pool for themselves... They deserve what they got.
  • a resturant in peterborough holds tournys everyweek there free to join and u win prizes not money so i guess thats ok? lol
  • Yes, that's OK. There are hundreds of free poker games every week in bars and restaurants. I have played with undercover cops and liquor inspectors without any problems.

  • We usually have a sit and go at our golf club every week with around 10 people and a $20 buy in.  Would this be legal or not?  Of course the money is kept off the table and there is no rake.
  • Hmm,

I just moved to stoney creek, and there's a bar which actually sends out pamphlets about their weekly tourney. $40 entry fee, and the event is for charity. Haven't seen the payouts, but I'm going to attend my first event this week.

I'm guessing that they don't know how dangerous it could be to advertise this through general mail...

They're not doing such a good job then if you know they are undercover cops.

Hey Blondefish...how did the undercover cops give themselves away? Did they use their badge as a card protector?
