Brantford 20/40

Does anyone else think this is the softest 20/40 in Ontario?

I won 55 BBs this friday night (from 11-6am) and despite running well, I didn't see a single person I felt was more of a favourite.

Lots of limping, very loose and passive table. One lady kept raising the turn with any draw, she was a pleasure to play against. I must have won at least 25 BBs from her heads up.

I used to give Rama the honour (PP is far and away the toughest in Ontario).

Why is this game so soft?

  • Nice session!!

I've never played the $20/$40, I haven't even moved up to $10/$20 yet, so I don't really have an answer for you. Maybe you choose a good night to play (raising with a draw lady)?
  • Oh yeah, I forgot to ask for a report of some of the hands you won to get an idea of how the skill level is for $20/$40.
  • I found the same thing at the $10/20 tables there. Lots of soft play. A few players that knew what was going on, and a few that were down right aweful.

Yeah Port Perry is pretty tough...There is a Chinese guy with long hair I forget his name, anyhow his one of the big players that runs the joint...

Right now the dealers are on strike! I hope they resolve the issue before the Aug 4th Tourney
  • I witnessed a crazy hand last night at the $20/$40 table behind me.

JJ vs. 55 vs. 22. Final board is 2577T. Pot size is around $2,000 someone said. The two losers of the hand were busted after that hand. It was intense, on the river card everyone (not really, like 10-15 people maybe) from the other tables gathered around to watch.

That's Kim, he's a very aggro player heads up, but plays very ABC in multiways. A little loose preflop but plays well postflop.

JJ is a total clown and typical of the Brantford 20/40. "Me have overpair me bet/raise". The 22 should not have been putting in multiple bets on the river if multiple bets went in on every street beforehand.

That's the thing: there were very few tough decisions. My first two hands were as follows:

I post in CO with KhKd. 2 limpers to me I raise. SB, BB, 2 limpers call.

Flop comes QhJh9d. checked to me, I bet, SB calls, MP check-raises, I 3-bet, Sb calls 2-cold, MP calls. Turn: (QhJh9d)Th. checked to me, I bet, all call. River ragged off. I bet all call and I take it down.

2nd hand: I am LP with JsTs. utg limps, one more limper to me, i call, button calls, sb completes, BB checks. flop: 8c7s4s. Checked to me, I bet, button calls, UTG calls. turn: (8c7s4s)Ks. UTG bets, I call, button calls. river: (8c7s4sKs)9h UTG bets, I call, button calls. (my thoughts: if i raise at any point, it's a double edged sword: UTG - who in a normal game i would have on a KQo type hand - might suspect flush and fold, and button might let go whatever sh*it pair he was on so i went for overcall) UTG flips 3s2s. I begin to salivate. Clearly this is no normal game.

About half an hour into the session, this hand came up:

I have Ad3c in BB. 4 limpers, I check my option. Flop: 8d Ah 9s. Checked to lady in LP (the one I beat up on later) who bet, folded to me, I raised. She called. turn came (8d Ah 9s) 2c. I bet, she raised, I folded. From then on, every time I was heads up with her she'd raise my turn bet. I just started calling her down (she'd usually bluff the river too) and she was showing missed draws and bad one pair no kicker hands. I won 3 pots from her out of the BB with trash - I'd have Q8o, flop would come KQ8, and we'd get in a raising war on the turn. She'd show down K2o. From MP. I ended up busting her when she 3-bet all in on the turn with two undercards and a flush draw vs. my top pair which held up.

There was no need to get fancy at all. Lots of value betting, virtually no checkraising. About two hours into my session I basically began to run all over the table, and really opened it up and stole way more than my fair share of pots.

The best way I can describe the table is by the most common sentence of the night: "but it was sooooted!"

What am I doing with the money? All into the bankroll and spent 200 on poker books. FWIW, I bought Inside the Poker Mind (feeney), Championship PL/NL hold 'em (Cloutier/McEvoy), Doyle's new book, ed miller's new book (Winning Small stakes hold 'em), mostly because i've discussed the text of it with him at 2+2 (the publishing company's website), and poker essays (malmuth) 2 and 3.
  • Talking about the skill level pf play at Brantford is like dicussing which of Kias cars will be in line for car of the year. It is amongst the weakest action in North America and if I had any complaint it is just that the swings can be horrendous when you are on tht table that has 7 way action raised every flop. It is basically the same crew that played in Rama before Brantford opened and that was the only place I played in 25 years that a 20-40 table had 880 in the pot preflop lol. What does that tell you. I should actually get there more often but with the net being good to me and Detoit across the river---I just don't bother anymore.
  • Right now, I only play the 5/10 because my bankroll isn't enough to play 10/20 and I'm getting sick of the players there. There have been countless times when I had AA, KK or QQ and there 5-6 people calling my raise to see what the flop brings. Almost every time someone makes an obvious flush or a straight with garbage hands, and I have to lay my hand down. I swear there are better players online who are playing lower limits (0.50/1, 1/2, 2/4).
  • Jay: Have you been studying the game? Reading books?

Before you even consider moving up, you have to read, reread, and rereread at least Theory of Poker by David Sklansky and Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky and Mason Malmuth.

These books are be the Old Testament for Poker Players.

Then, buy Winning Small Stakes Hold 'em by Ed Miller, Sklansky, and Malmuth. That's the New one.
  • I've read both of those Sklansky books once already.

Let me know how that Ed Miller book is. I'm considering it...
