  • Hey, awesome!

I wonder if his Affleck-esque good looks will boost sales? As was the case with featuring Sloth, CPP must be trying to reach the ladies this issue. ;)

Of course, some of us got a sneak preview of what he looks like on TSN yesterday when he was doing the goofy opening segment for Off The Record. :D

Will he be on the cover with or without that hat?

    ScottyZ
  • I saw OTR, but missed the significance of the hat....
  • Awesome!

/me joins the all_aces fan club
  • Kind of a funny story behind this. In our last member tournament, I commented on aces picture.

Me: Hey, man, that's a really nice pic.
    Aces: Thanks.
    Me: Is it professionally done?
    Ace: You could say that.
Me: Really? For what occasion was it taken?
Ace: I figure I might need it someday.

As it turns out, he was waiting until it was "officiallly" said by Dave here before saying anything...but at the same time, Aces thought I was pulling his leg because he'd assumed that Dave had already told me.

Congrats man. Enjoy being a celebrity!
  • Oh, so his PokerStars avatar and the CPP cover photo are one and the same?

I hope they blow it up a bit for the CPP cover. ;)

    ScottyZ
  • I was totally flattered when Dave approached me about being the subject of a CPP article, and still am. I've read the article, and honestly, I'm not worthy... I have a lot to live up to in the next little while.

My friends and family are extremely excited about this; and me, well, I think it's some cool-ass shit!!! Something that'll make me smile for a long time. I plan on hanging a copy of the cover right over my poker table... ;)
I wonder if his Affleck-esque good looks will boost sales? As was the case with featuring Sloth, CPP must be trying to reach the ladies this issue.
Lol yeah right. I look about as much like Affleck as Carrot Top does, but I appreciate the sentiment. I guess if the ladies like skinny white boys, I'm their man...

No, the hat will not be involved in any way, shape, or form with the CPP stuff. Hork42, the only significance the hat had was that it was daaaaaamn ugly. I mean, I have nothing against cowboy hats, but this was a *straw* cowboy hat.

As an aside, here's a PM I sent Sloth after the last pokerforum tournament on Stars: (my Stars pic is taken from the CPP photo shoot, although it is not the one they will be using for the cover)
    Last night's chat...
... was WAY too funny. You kept asking me questions about my pic, and I kept trying to be evasive, because I didn't know if you knew or not and I didn't want to let any cats out of any bags lol. Here's how I remember it:

    You: That's a nice pic
    Me: Thanks!
    You: Looks professionally done?
    Me: You could say that...
    You: So is it?
    Me: Yeah, I guess
    You: What's the occasion?
Me: Figured it might come in handy someday...
You: You next month's cover of CPP?
    Me: lol
    You: ;-)

It was like we were playing poker or something. I'm thinking does he know or is he just chatting, and I'm trying to be as vague and non-commital as possible, until you just came out and said it. Too funny.

    BTW, how'd ya know?
    To which he replied:
oh my lord!?! you really ARE on the cover? lol I had no idea!
Oops. You can see how, from our chat during the tournament, I thought he knew all about it. Too funny.

Thanks again for the article Dave. I think it's great, and hearing those things coming from you is a great compliment. C'mon August!!! ;)

    Regards,
    all_aces
  • Lol just read Sloth's post. I guess we both got a kick out of that lol.
  • ya, but yours made more sense than mine lol I just woke up.
  • Well, at least this might explain why Dave Scharf took a trip to Toronto for no apparent reason... ;)

    Looking forward to the article!

I think my g/f could have a wonderful time with this one. "See that guy on the cover of this issue of CPP? I ironed him out in a tournament once."

[But let's forget about the fact that he busted me out of that same tournament, okay?]

    ScottyZ

Actually, I didn't see Dave on that trip... I suspect he was travelling to Ontario to confirm details for the CPT. My interviews were conducted by phone, and e-mail. As for the photo shoot, one of CPP's Toronto writers, Vince, came over to my place with two photographers and a boatload of gear.

I'm a professional camera operator, and I was impressed. These guys were pro, all the way. As for Vince, he's a very nice guy who has since become a regular in my single-table tournaments... ;)

Lol, yes she did bust me out of a KW tournament once, and no, I don't think any of us will forget that I busted you out of it first, Scotty... (Your pocket tens vs. my pocket aces on a rag flop....)

    Regards,
    all_aces
  • Wow man congratulations! Can't wait to read the article. I also can;t wait to tell all my friends I am going to play at the same tournament ;)

    Again congrats!!!

    *waiting for my cover* ;)

Got your skiis shined up, grab a stick of juicy fruit,
the taste is gonna move ya :D

    INDEED :D

    we need the HAT :D

  • Hey, congrats Devin. That is totally awesome. Now all you have to do is win a large tournament title, which should be much easier for you, especially if I am not in the field... ;)

BTW - Since you and Scotty are talking about old times, I think we all know who busted everyone out in that K/W event. If I do recall, I played Scotty's girl head's up for the belt, and a fine belt it was indeed...
  • Ahhh... someone else on the forum I thought I had never met but actually did once and didn't know it. :)

Yep, Shnoobs finished 2nd in that particular tourney.

    ScottyZ
  • Now all you have to do is win a large tournament title
Yeah, and that's going to be SO easy to do... ;) Actually, I was thinking the same thing.

Dave actually approached me about the article before my 2nd place finish in the Stars tourney, so I was glad that I was able to add something to my 'poker career highlights' list before the article was published. Now, the pressure's on. I am seriously thinking about this:

    http://www.pokerpages.com/tournament/schedule1567.htm

from September 30th to (hopefully) Oct 7th, but we'll see. Also, the WCOOP is coming up at Stars. I'm still not sure which events I'll be playing in, but I'll be in at least one or two of them. I'm probably going to play a satellite for the main event this weekend.

  • Now, the pressure's on.
Finding about all this CPP stuff makes the fact that you've been getting unusually (IMO) down on yourself lately about your tournament performance make a little bit more sense to me.

True, you've been facing a lot of bad beats in tournaments, but I think these might be getting magnified a lot by the feeling that you need to somehow perform well because you are featured shortly in an upcoming poker article.

For what it's worth, my advice is to try to forget about pressuring yourself. You've already have several *major* poker accomplishments (Regina top 6 finish for a nice payout at a major Canadian tournament, PokerStars $35K for 2nd place, busting up a shorthanded $25-$50 online game for thousands of dollars, being invited to participate in the opening segment of a national sports talk show, to name only a few). Your poker resume has already gone well beyond what >99% of us have done, and you should be proud of that. You've got nothing to prove.

IMO, your being featured in the next CPP is very well justified already, and CPP has made an excellent choice.

Hmmm... I think you may be on to something there, Scotty. Not like the article is a burden in any way... quite the opposite. But maybe part of me feels a need to win *all the time* now, which as we all know is pretty much impossible in poker. As always, it's probably best to let the chips fall as they may, so to speak.

    Thanks man. :)

  • Sheet D, that tourney at the Taj looks pretty sweet. What's that awesome quote from Worm about stacking up piles of checks at the Taj playing against outclassed tourists??? That is one of my favorites from Rounders.

I can't remember it, but its the exact same sentiment I get when I just gotta go out and hit up Brantford at 11 pm on a Tuesday night...

Dude, you should aim high, because you've already been so close. A couple to top finishes in very large fields should do that to you. You've obviously got the game for it, so there is no shame in wanting or expecting to win a large event in the near future, regardless of your cover story or not. Setting the bar high is always an excellent motivator.
  • Now all you have to do is win a large tournament title...
    PokerForum.ca Celebrity Challenge???

Seriously... Congrats on the feature article. You have a talent for telling a good story... I thoroughly enjoyed all your WSOP trip reports. Awesome writing, good humour, perfect mix. Two thumbs up all-around!!

Not so sure about the OTR intro though... I'd leave that one off the resume!!:D

l guess this means I have no chance in heck to make the cover ! :frown:

    Congrats Aces!

I'll second Scotty on this one.
  • Congrats A_A. Bask in the moment. :)

Also caught the OTR replay. lol All I can say is.....
  • I can't believe that I missed your OTR appearance. I hope that you got it on tape man, that kind of stuff is classic to hold on to. I have my appearance on Global news on tape, and we watched it late one night when we were all wasted, it was hilarious.

Please, please tell me that you zinged Landsberg at least once. That guy is begging for it...
  • Lol thanks guys, I'm pretty excited about August. I plan to do the following:

    - Travel to all the Ontario casinos, holding CPP. I'll ask to speak to the poker manager in each one, so I can tell them that their blind structures for their tournaments seriously, seriously suck.

    - Go to any Chapters/Indigo that stocks CPP and put the issues lined up along the front of the rack. Then, I'll stand there for awhile. (Sloth told me about that one, and it sounds great...) lol j/k

    - Casually read the issue just about everywhere I go.

    - Play a lot more casino poker.

    - Request not just to be on Off The Record, but demand a half-hour, one-on-one interview. It will end with me and Michael playing heads-up for five minutes, and then I'll get free sandwiches. Free HOT sandwiches.

    - If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

    ;)

    Regards,
    all_aces,
    tongue firmly in cheek.
  • In the August issue of Canadian Poker Player the "Poker Player Spotlight" features all_aces of our own pokerforum.ca. Sloth was the first... all-aces is the next. And yes, he is on the cover.
Dam, it must have been a slow month of poker in the world.

Jokes, congrats AA, you deserve it. Maybe one day I'll even get my name mentioned :)
  • My claim to fame, which I also have on tape, was about 6 years ago. Got 12 seconds airtime (and a nice comment from the announcer) on Speedvision for myself, my Dad and another dude. (I still hate the new name Speed btw) We went to an NHRA National event drag race, and I made up a kickass sign just to get us on TV. lol I think they figured I was dreaming. lol I was almost gonna take bets before, that I could do it too. lol On the sign I said, NHRA drag racing on Speedvision kicks asphalt. We all got a big laugh out of it at the time. Second day there, I caught the attention of a cameraman, and waved him over to talk. Showed him the sign, and he said he couldn't promise anything but would mention it to the guys in the booth. About an hour or two later one of the guys said, "stand up and hold up the sign, the camera is pointing at us." lol I did. And the rest is celluloid. They did a close group zoom so you could read the sign, then did a long fade into a commercial. lmao

PS, If Andy Warhol's fame theory is true, someone owes me three fucking seconds. lol
  • Good stuff. Can't wait to read the article...
  • Dam, it must have been a slow month of poker in the world.
LOL it must have been... ;):D

Nice story DJP. I'd trade my OTR opening for your Speedvision spot any day of the week. Unless you were wearing a straw cowboy hat.
Good stuff. Can't wait to read the article...
Thanks Jay. You guys have heard some of it already, told here. Dave spiced it up nicely though... I really like what he did with the first paragraph.

    Regards,
    all_aces
  • Holy shit! Anyone can get on this cover, wtf! :)jk
Way to go AA, that is freaken awesome! :D
What is this opening on OTR all about? Do you have the clip you can post?

Dude, you must be losing your mind waiting for August!

    So cool..

Is this really so crazy? Or if you can snag Dave next time he's in Ontario -- he'd prob make the trip to promote CPP -- you two could do a double appearance.
