Bad beat jackpot rules

Just hosted my first poker night. Me and a buddy played heads up with 10 buck buy in, played limit poker and ended up pretty much even on the night(okay, I lost a buck fiddy to him). We came up with the idea of having a bad beat jackpot for future games. Anyone have any interesting ideas, or rules for the bad beat. As a rule in my games there will be no wild. The majority of the night was spent playing omaha hi, it was getting boring winning with two pair all the time playing just hold 'em. We seeded the jackpot with 1.50 each tonight. Figure it should be big enough so that people will continue to come, should we continue to play. Is 1.50 too much per person/night?Not enough? Is it legal to collect for a bad beat jackpot? Should I collect on a /pot basis? I know it all sounds pretty mickey mouse, but figure better start low when just learning to host home games.

  • For Omaha (high), you probably need to set the bad beat standard fairly high. Something like quads or better (maybe even specific quads or better) as the losing hand. Generally in casinos, the losing hand is paid the largest postion of the jackpot, then the winning hand, then everyone else gets a very small portion. However, for a home game, the jackpot is probably not all that big, so you might consider simply paying the bad beat losing hand the whole thing.

How you collect to build the jackpot is really up to you. Collecting from each pot is typical in casinos, but if you find this inconvenient for home game play, any other way will do fine too.

  • I know a guy who won a huge bad beat jackpot a couple of weeks ago. He got US$28K, his opponent got around half of that, and the rest of the table got $1-2K each I think. Here's how the hand went:

Guy I Know has 66. Flop is J76, the betting is capped I think. Turn is 6, betting is capped again. River is 7, him and opponent are betting like crazy. The other guy has 77.

    Crazy.
