The Perfect Hand... But did I miss out?

5-10 NL Cash Game - Live

My Position: BB

5th Position raises preflop to $50 (been playing with him for the whole session - regular, pegged him as an aggressive player)

folded to SB.. SB calls (another regular - text book tight aggressive player) I look down at Jh 10h and call.

Stacks - 5 Pos (approx) $2k, Me (approx) $1800, SB (Approx) $700

FLOP

A :h: 9 :s: Q :h:

SB: Check
Me: Bet $75
5th Pos: Call
SB: Call

TURN

6 :s:

SB: Check
Me: Bet $200
5th Pos: Call
SB: Call

RIVER

Magical - K :h:

SB: Check
Me: Check
5Pos: (After Inquiring about my stack) $300
SB: Fold
Me: Raise $500 -> Total $800
5 Pos: call (Disgusted)

I show a Royal flush hearts, 5th Pos shows Js 10s - Straight to the A

My main questoin relates to the last round of betting.. I know some may consider betting on the flop and turn unorthadox but I felt that it was the check on the river which might have hurt me in the end.

What would you have done.. bet it out hoping for a reraise or check and trap, or check raise more?

Comments

  • IMO, you probally got as much as you could with the flush (let alone the RF) on board.

    NH.
  • I like the lead on the flop as long as you're prepared to go over the top all-in if you get raised. When both call the flop I would probably check the turn, if someone puts in a big raise there you're in a bad spot and they don't look like they're going anywhere. I would lead out the river. As you played it you won a big pot but if the 3rd player checks behind (which he often would) you've given away a lot, where as a $400-$500 bet is almost always getting paid off by one of the 2, and they might even raise you.
  • I like the flop lead, and I would three bet big if raised. On the turn, where your equity decreases because of only one card to come, a check is my preferred play.

On the river, of couse you raise, and I'd probably push depending on stack sizes.

Bad position is a BIG game.

Truthfully, I probably fold this pre-flop out of position. In position I call. It's close, though and I certainly don't fault the call.

THis is one of those hands that when the flop hits I think to myself "I am going to go broke on this hand." 15 outs. Barring a Kh flush draw they are all nut outs. A LOT of chips are going into this pot. 1/2 pot is exactly that I would do. Nicely cloaks your hand. If could be a draw, but calling in the BB with AK or AQ or even AJ looks possible. You are not giving anything away betting and you set up a possible BIG win.
    TURN

    SB: Check

    5th Pos: Call
    SB: Call

Now it's more problematic. They both called the flop so I think it's likely that one or both will call the turn. In this case, the ideal bet is an amount that, when called will offer you the right odds as though you had called. There is $375 in the pot. How much will we make if we hit our hand? I would think that at least 1/2 pot bet on river will get called. So, bet an amount that if called will be a good odds bet with these conditions (assuming only one will call your turn bet). 2-1 to make your hand. You can bet up to the pot. This will cause you big trouble is the big stack comes over the top but at least you get away. I think the $200 bet here is fine.

I bet the river FOR SURE. I have been called on the flop and turn. This card completes EVERY draw. So, either my opponent has a made hand that he will call with or he has just hit his draw and he may raise. Bet as much as you think he will call and hope he raises.
  • WoW. Ya hear about those hands but never get them. I would like to congratulate you on a hand well played. The only thing i might have done differently is bet more on the river to get more money... but meh.
