rama, brantford, sarnia, port perry rankings

I'm just curious what people think about each of these casinos.

Myself:

Sarnia: very loose, lots of action, lots of Americans. 5-10 and 10-20 only.

Brantford: people chase cards more than elsewhere, HARD DAYTIME poker...don't bother during weekdays.

Rama: ????never been

Port Perry: ????never been

AS you can see, I want to know about Rama and Port Perry:)

  • I haven't been to Sarnia or Brantford yet but I can tell you about the other rooms, rama and Port Perry.

Rama is pretty good. Ten tables good action. Tourists are sometimes there because they are attracted to the shows and what not. It's also a nice room and casino. Only problem is it's out in the middle of no where very much like Port Perry.
Port Perry though is small, way out of the way and to me seems to attract better players or at least just a lot regulars. It's the toughest casino game I've played in and is the only cardroom where I'm down at overall. They have 8 tables and the waiting list is usually long on the weekends.

Myself living in Kingston either travel to Port Perry or Turning Stone Casino. Turning Stone is excellent just across the border in Verona, NY. 27 tables of goodness, regular tournaments and lots of fish. I've made a good chunk of change for the time I've spent in that cardroom. It's also a very nice facility. It is dry to so if there is anyone here under 21 they can play as long as they are 18. The spread all sorts of games too 7 Stud, sometime Omaha and have a 5\10 NL game going sometimes. My favourite casino, other than casinos in Vegas. Never been to AC.
  • How are the tournaments at turning stone?
    When are they? Weekly, monthly?

    Sounds like fun.
  • Check their website www.turning-stone.com I think. They run almost everyday. They then host some big ones. Like the East Coast Poker Champs and the Empire State Poker Champs with the main events being up to 500 dollar buy-ins. Their dailys are usually cheap. The only daily I've played there is the 20+5 NLHE tournament with unlimited 5 dollar rebuys for the first hour! HOLY JESUS it's nuts. I've only played it twice and the top prize is usually 18-19 hundred dollars. Of course us Canadian will get 30% taken off for their tax purposes.

But other dailys included limit hold'em 7 stud, 7 stud hi lo and I think they have an omaha.

They also run satellites for the WPT and WSOP and their own big events.
  • rama and port are the 2 casinos i play at for about 5 days a week.

i play mostly mornings til sometime between lunch and dinner, where i go home and start my routine the next day.

i opt to like rama better as a poker room due to the no-smoking rule port doesnt have. the poker room is being constantly improved putting players requests first at rama and many players are returning as of late.

usually, rama gets its first 10/20 going at 11am and a second table going shortly after. weekday 20/40 game has been non-existent, but more and more players are showing up wanting the higher limits.

port does have a 10/20 going around the clock and usually a 20/40 table as well. but the smoke is still what many patrons are unhappy with.

both these casinos have good action and the tv coverage of the wpt and wsop has increased the people wanting to play.
  • The only one I haven't been to is Rama. In order of easiest to beat to hardest, I'd have to say it's:

    Sarnia
    Brantford
    Port Perry

I'd say Sarnia & Brantford are pretty similar and Port Perry is noticably tougher (but still beatable).

I've only ever played 5-10 myself so I don't know anything about the higher limit games.

JonB: Have you ever tried the Akwesasne Casino near Massena, NY (just across the border from Cornwall, ON)? They normally have one or two tables of 3-6 (kill 5-10) and 5-10 (kill 10-20) going, and weekly tournaments. It's the closest poker room to Ottawa, but I'm not sure if that would be closer to Kingston than Turning Stone (or Port Perry) or not.

  • Of course us Canadian will get 30% taken off for their tax purposes

I was wondering about that, actually... I'm considering going to play in a couple of WSOP events in a month, and on the off-chance (very off) that I make the money, do I really lose about 30% of it just like that?

I hear these adds on the radio about the U.S. "withholding tax", and how they can get it back for you. Is this B.S.?

    Any help is appreciated,

  • Check out the thread

B&M poker game talk -> Winning money in the USA.

for discussion about the US withholding tax on poker winnings.

    The executive summary:

Yes, they withhold tax for large gambling payouts.
Yes, you can somehow get this back when you get back to Canada.

  • Sarnia is the bottom of the three I've been to (Rama, Brantford, Sarnia). They only have 4 tables out among the din of the slots. You can phone ahead, I phoned at 4:45, show up at 5:20 and there are 3 tables going. The wait list is around 10. I go eat and come back there are half a dozen loitering but still the 4th table stays closed. A while later a dealer sits down and I think ok, here we go. He sits for another half hour before they open up this table around 7.
Much of the table knew each other just like Brantford. Ground out more than one BB per hour sitting but not for the whole time in the casino. Had my AA broke by 58o. This is still a smoker until Sept.
So, Rama is a nicer place, Brantford and Rama both have more tables, and they both seem more geared to customers. The poker boss was pretty snotty which seemed odd considering how many were waiting. I think Rama gets more tourists, and the 2-5 draws more loose money. Brantford is closer though so I will head back there and try to start winning as I have not had any success there. Just new though.
I did meet a couple of dudes from London at Sarnia who spoke of a poker league come fall. That should be good times.
  • I have played in many card rooms across North America including most in Vegas, all across California, Foxwoods and Atlantic City...As well as Rama

I can honestly say the poker room in Port Perry(if you can call it a room) is by far the worst poker room i have played in...

Here are a few observations and complaints I have

    1. Dealers are miserable..Several dealers are not happy there(actually they might be going on strike soon)..
    2. Very strict and stupid rules...ie no headphones, no lucky charms on table
    3. No customer service...I felt like i am doing THEM a favour by playing in their casino...
    4. The dealers in general were slow and made several mistakes and didnt seem to understand the game

As a Canadian I am embarrased to say that the customer service and the overall running of poker rooms in California and Vegas are a HUNDRED times better than what i have seen in Port Perry

Being a former poker dealer and then a professional poker player for 5 years i can appreciate good service when i see it....Now i consider myself a recreational player who goes and makes some money and has some fun doing it....There was no FUN at Port perry....

I dont recomment people go there if you have an option

  • Hey Serge,

Although I lack the experience in poker and poker rooms, I will say this to your comments:
    1. Dealers are miserable..Several dealers are not happy there(actually they might be going on strike soon)..

This to me does not change the fun a I have during a game, I usually chit chat with other players and not the dealer.
    2. Very strict and stupid rules...ie no headphones, no lucky charms on table

I don't think I would ever play in a table with headphones and lucky charms! There is a certain skill and prestige to goes with playing poker, and I would hate for the game of poker to be turned into a BINGO or SLOT machine type a game! Lucky Charms?!?! YUCK!

    3. No customer service...I felt like i am doing THEM a favour by playing in their casino...
Well this is a charity casino...not really with the big boys that don't even offer poker except for Rama.
    4. The dealers in general were slow and made several mistakes and didnt seem to understand the game
I play at Port Perry quite often and can tell you that there's maybe 2 dealers who are not point with the game. Although One of them is a girl who is got a great personality.
  • LOL ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That's my post! I guess I was not signed in! :D
  • I don't like miserable dealers. I prefer a happy and fun dealer. This one dealer I had before would crack jokes and talk about sports while he was dealing. He was really cool but unfortunately he didn't deal me many good hands.
