Story of my week.

I have finally come to the realization that I need to walk away for a few days (weeks) or so. For the last 4 days I"ve had nothing but these kinds of hands. When you walk away what do you do instead of playing poker? Take up needle point?

  • My week...

(I didn't want to start my own bad beat thread, but here's the one I took last night)

    $1/$2 live cash game
:ad :8d on the button w/ 9 players at the table
    One MP limped
my read on MP: he would call any moderate raise pre-flop, but fold very willingly to a continuation bet if he misses the flop, whereas he would bet out if he hit
    I raised to $8
    Small blind calls
my read on SB: he liked to play hands I was in, but we never really tangled (this donk guy kept re-raising with an underpair... long story)
    MP called, as expected
    Flop: :8c :3d :10d
    I like it!
Checked around. I bet $12 into a pot of $26
SB calls as expected... he liked to stick around to at least the turn
    MP folds as expected
    Turn: :as
    Awesome!
    SB checks
    I bet $24 into a pot of $50
SB calls. I am now 100% sure he's on the flush draw :D probably with a 10
He and I had been talking earlier about implied odds, so I knew he would have no problem chasing without having odds.
    River: :9c
He checks, I bet $35, he only had $45 and threw it all in there... I reluctantly called the extra $10 and he showed :qd :jd

I know, I know... I should have checked the river, but I didn't want to have to show my hand. I hadn't shown cards all game and was using my table image to my advantage on numerous other hands :'(

I took the second and fourth week of April off, and was wondering the same thing. I stopped playing, but I didn't leave poker entirely. I spent the first break doing a lot of reading and evaluating my HH in PT, and I learned lots (and found some new holes in my play). The second break Jenn and I were away for a week, so I didn't miss it. The break really helped, and I've enjoyed poker a lot more this month than I have in a while, and I've been playing better too.

For you though, the ponies might give you a nice break ;) . Good luck Joe!

Knew I was forgetting something in my post.

When I walk away I usually start reading a new (non-poker) book and and leave it near my computer, so anytime I get the urge to login to Stars I pick up the book instead. Alternatively, if I really need to scratch the itch, I play fake money and donk off as much as possible. Very refreshing... especially when people pick cyber fights with you over play money. Pushing, knowing you have 2 outs... then hitting one of them... SO MUCH FUN!!!

  • I've done the play money push like Greg. It is a lot of fun. It really gets people upset. It's play money!

Alternatively, I get some TV on DVD and watch an entire season.
  • Thanks for the ideas. I especially like the one about donking off the play money. I am spending next week in Quebec City and was going to bring the lap top. Maybe I should just leave it at home. Read a non poker book.....wow what a concept.
  • I go camping or some similar activity and leave the laptop at home.
  • I took about a month off after a couple of bad weeks online but made sure I had a future tournament in mind when I knew I would return to playing (so at least I knew the time off was only temporary). I played for the first time again at the Westside tournament after about six weeks of not doing anything poker related and placed in the $$$ so I realize the time off did me some good. Staying away from poker books, etc. is also a good idea. Plant some tomatoes, that should keep you busy until August.

I just moved, so I've been super busy with unpacking and all the assorted crap that has to be done. I've only been online ~4hrs since May 1st. They've been the most $rewarding$ and fun times I've had playing online in a long time.

I think that I'm going to try something like make Monday night "online poker night". It would go over better with the SO if it was a scheduled, regular thing and I think I'll probably do better because I'll be paying more attention when I do play. The months leading up to moving, playing online was my default activity and my results/other life definitely suffered for it.
  • I say leave the laptop at home, and forget about poker for awhile. When you really start to miss it, then pick up a (new?) POKER RELATED book and study that for awhile. Don't play until you are done. Then ease yourself back to the tables, making sure you have fun! Keeping it fun is the best way to play.

  • I'm taking a week off too (as of sunday), studying a bit during the week then i'll head to the cottage for the long weekend, and back to b&m on tuesday!
  • When I take a break I try to find all this porn people say is on the internet?

    or jack king off ;)
  • I think I'm going to take some time off for a bit as well, this was a very angry week....If I hear 'you played great, just got unlucky' one more time, I'm going to get fined for a murder death kill, John Spartan! Are there poker books specifically written on how to suck out?

Funny.  I'll put up my suckout record against yours any time.  And I thought Mario was writing this book - "The Dummies Guide to Calculating Suckout Odds".
