Casino Windsor Advice/Opinions.

Hi folks,

I’m looking for some advice/opinions on Casino Windsor’s poker games.

I’m moving to Windsor in Aug and plan on playing a fair amount of Hold’em at the casino. I’m wondering what you folks can tell me about the quality of the players there, the daily tourney’s, what stakes you find to be the most profitable, if the limit games are better than the NL games etc etc. As far as my playing background, I’m a fairly competent Holdem player. I play in the local poker league; play in a weekly tourney with some pretty decent players and various side games at local bars etc and usually finish in the money. I like the cash games better but play more NL tourney’s. I’ll probably start off at 3/6 limit to get a feel for the play and I read on someone’s trip report here, that the session fee for NL is $6/30min, which sounds pretty steep. I lived in Ontario for 3 years and played a fair amount at Rama and GBH, so I’m used to the casino atmosphere etc, just looking to get some info on what you experienced guys think of Windsor’s operation so I can start prepping my game for the Casino.

Thanks for any advice you can offer and if anyone has any experiance at any of the Detroit Casino's, please share!

Cheers!

  • I live in the Detroit area, and while I have been to Casino Windsor many times, I have never played in their newly opened poker room. I do know they have daily $50 or $100 NL tourneys and a monthly $500 tourney. These are posted on their website. I do play on a semi regular basis in the Greektown (detroit poker rooms). They have a $100 tourney on Sundays. Greektown has a lot of tables. Fixed limit they have 3/6, 5/10, 10/20 and 20/40. They also have a pot limit omaha game. As for no limit they run 1/2 tables with a $100 max buy in. The big game has a weird set up. 2/2/5 blinds (the button posts two bucks as well). This game has a minimum buy in of $300 (i think), but no maximum. So it makes for an interesting game. I usually sit down with about $600 and usually have about the same money as 5-7 players and there are usaully 3 guys that sit down with over 1K. Interesting game, but very playable. Plenty of maniacs, not willing to lay down top pair or an overpair. Obviously there are accomplished players as well. Hope this helps.

  • I have been working in Windsor the last 10 weeks. I have played about 8 sessions in that time. They all have occured between Mon-Thurs night from 5:30pm to 11pm.

Limit Poker: The only game that has been available is $3-$6. They always have a list of interest for $5-$10 (which I sign up for) but I a game has never materialized. Usually there a 4-5 players over 50 and 4-5 players under 25. I am 36 and everybody looks old enough to be my parent/grandparent or they are young and still have zits. For the most part I see the same players each time I play. In order to win you have to play straightforward poker and stay away from trying your Gus Hansen moves.

NL Poker: They have several tables of $100 and $200 max. I have only played 1 session in the $100max. The standard raise when I played (1/2 NL...$100max) was $10-$15 before the flop. Unless you are an experienced NL ring game player I would stay away. I was uncomfortable in this environment as it was my first time and I had a miserable session.

Poker Room: Has just as many male waiters as waitresses. The card tables are like Vegas (automatic shufflers). Some of the dealers are lacking in the "courteous and professional" department. I have asked during 2 different sessions for a table change because one of their male dealers talks non-stop about his personal life and the game literally slows to a crawl.
If you look under your table you will notice plenty of coffee cups, wrappers and other assortments of garbage. I have never seen that in a B&M before. The poker room has never been full when I have gone. Wait times have always been less than a 1/2hr for the limit games.

Compared to Brantford & Fallsview the Windsor casino sucks in atmosphere and the room is rather bland. I cannot wait to start playing at Brantford again once a week.
  • They run a tournment every day of the week. Monday, Wednesday, Friday its a $100+$10 tourny, tuesday and thursdays they run a $50+$5 they start @ 10am capped at 70 pp registeration starts an hr br unless ur playin then its 2 hours and they fill up quick. They also run a $500 buyin on the last friday of every month. The $1-$2 is usually pretty loose on weekends since alot of younger americans come over get drunk an try to play poker. During the week not too many games come around but I've been there when they have had $10-20 limit games goin on. If the interest is there they will run a $5-10 NL game $500 min. Ya the session fee's are $6 every half hour an really kills ur stack if ur not pickin up any hands. $3-$6 is the only limit its full of beginners and chasers and if u get lucky u can make some money since ppl won't fold.
  • Thanks for the info so far guys, it sounds pretty much as I was expecting...Play a tight/aggressive, straightforward game and try to steer clear of the numerous chaseres until you make a solid hand. Looks like I'm going to be focusing on my limit game to get ready. I'll probably play the 3/6 limit and try out the tourney's. I've heard a bit about the Greektown Casino and it sounds like a decent place to play, and few people have mentioned the Motor City Casino, but Greektown seems to have a better reputation.

Thanks again and keep the opinions coming!

  • MotorCity is actually a Nicer Room in my opinion. They have free sandwiches, which is a nice touch. However, Greektown is bigger and the waiting time is usually shorter. Also, I think Greektown picks up a few tourists. Greektown is a hot spot (if that is possible it Detroit) for visitors due to its proximity to Comerica Park, Ford Field and the theatres. Motor City is mostly local detroiters and suburbanites.

ps. Rake at Greektown doesn't make much sense. $6 per half hour at $100 max buy in (12% of your stack per hour). $8 per half hour at big game where average stack is about $500. Therefore, for rake purposes, big game is much more economical. Also, I don't understand the pre-flop raise thing at casinos. Online, if the blinds are 1-2, a standard raise is 5-8. In the big game, with blinds at 2-2-5, the minimum standard opening raise is usually $25-$40. Doesn't make much sense to me.
  • Here's my advice :

    Play their games.
    Practice basic hand reading.
If you play limit, valuebet constantly.
If you play no limit, top pair is the nuts.

  • I play many sessions there ... and the tournys are actually quite easy... Won 3 of the last 5 ive played in.. as for the nl game 100 max.. mmmm that is a GREAT game but on certain days... friday saturday and holidays. Now heres the way to make easy money.
be able to stay late hours as the drunk american kids tend to come piling in around 12 till bars close... most sit down with the $60 minimum go all in and call it a night.. play many hands like qj q10 and when they hit a pair PUSH which is a easy call when your sitting with aq :)
