Alright, at least I have a new stick of deodorant ...
yup.Â
62/250
not my proudest poker moment.
I did not look at a card for the first 22 minutes. This was by design. It really freaked out some of the people on my table (mostly the dealer though) as nobody could believe that I drove all the way to not look at cards.
Round 2, first or second hand, I see pocket 8's. I raise ($250 on a $100 blind) and dude to my left reraises another $400 (gulp). I call and it's the two of us. Flop comes 3 8 5. I bet out $200 and he turns to me and says, "ready for your degree all in moment?" I laughed and said sure. He pushes and I flip my set. He groans and shows red aces. I hold up and HGHN.
6 hands later, I see pocket 6's. I raise to $250, get 4 callers and the big blind folds. Flop is 2 4 6. I bet $800 and take it down.
Round 3 (antes at this point)
On my big blind I see AJ spades. I triple the blinds ($600 to go) and everyone folds to the small blind. He pushes another 600 or so into the pot and waits for me. I call and flip to see his 8's. Nothing on the board, he wins.
On my puck (on the next round of the puck) I see AJ clubs. Basically the exact same thing happens. I triple the blinds and dude to my right pushes. He must have played and lost a few hands cause it comes back to me at $1300 or so. I call again and see his 9's. They hold up and I sigh again.Â
I was actually ok for chips there. I believe it was around there when I spiked an ace to knock someone out (AQ vs KK).
Anyhow, break and I go and look at the falls. They're still awesome to behold and I still can't imagine what goes through someone's head when they say to themselves, "hey, I would love to know what it feels like to go over those falls in a barrel".
I digress.
Round 4 (at this point, there are 150 people left or so making the average stack appx $4000 - but there was a $50 ante and the blinds were $200-$400 - we were paying just under 30% of the average stack per round!!!!)
I see 8's under the gun and I make it $1000. I get called all in by the guy 2 to my left and everyone else folds. He flips 10 J off and hits a 10. At least he was only in for $750. Oh well - I gotta win a coin flip at SOME point, right?
WRONG!!
Nothing exciting for another round. I was getting drained slowly by those stupid antes. I picked up a pot or two with some position betting.
So I am under the gun in round 6 in which we were paying $100 ante and the blinds were $500/$1K. Quick math says that I won't make another round ($2200 in my stacks at this point) - I peek and see A4 hearts. So I raise all in and get called by a sweet old man on my direct left. He says, "I think you have me beat" to which I said, "then muck your cards now". I don't think he understood what I meant.
Anyhow, he flips pocket 4's (which were monsters today - the host kept announcing the all ins and there were pocket 4's seemingly all over the place and they were actually winning lots of stuff) - Flop is A54 and IGHN.
I get my bag o goodies and go drop it in the car (yay for valet - dropping that stupid bag in my car cost me 20 mins later in the day - the guy who brought my car to me forgot to write down where he moved it to when he returned it - no tip for him!).
Then I went to the poker pit where I saw a bunch of people looking dejected with their little goodie bags and their little player tags.
People, when you are at a conference, show or tournament like this and they give you a little thing to wear around your neck for easy ID, TAKE IT OFF WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED - it looks silly. Plain old silly. These are not back stage passes to the Alice Cooper concerts and you're not Wayne Campbell.
Anyhow, the line up is insane (6-12 had 78 people on the list) and I didn't need to play THAT badly. So I was walking out the the $5 black jack table was calling me (did I just say that I didn't need to play that bad???).Â
I sit down, cash $50 and end up winning $12.50. I tip the dealer and the waitress and leave with my two red chips. For some reason, I ended up putting that $10 into a slot machine that caught my eye. Actually, it was the goddess playing the machine beside that one that caught my eye. So I sat down and was immediately sorry when I caught a whiff of either body odour, flatulance, or some serious medical condition. Nothing is worse than hot chicks who stink. Oh - my $10 won me $1100!
So I am happy. I waited for the little dude in the cart to pay me. And then I went back to the poker pit to take a look at the $10/25 NL game there. I didn't really care to sit down though (dunno why) and passed the Let it ride tables. I sat down and 3 hands into the game, a dude who was betting $50 a spot lets it ride. The dealer filps 2 queens and he is noticably agitated. She flips his 3 cards - JQQ for quads. He made $7500!!!
Anyhow, I got a few hands, nothing exciting. Went over to 3 card poker. Then I managed to get a bunch of pairs (A99 three times in a row - anyone wanna tell me the odds of that?) and some straights (AKQ and 678) so I left that table with $350.
Then I decided not to push my luck. My tendancy is to go hot for a little while and then chase money down the drain. I was up $1500 or so, enough's enough.
I cashed in, went to the tobacconist and bought a nice cigar. You can still smoke in the bars in Niagara Falls for another few weeks and the Colorado/Anaheim game was on, so I asked where to go. The valet (who lost my car) offered that the sports bar in the other casino was actually nice - so off I went.
And he was right. It's really nice. Not comperable to the sports bars in LV, but for Ontario, it was awesome. A nice 20 oz draft and the ducks win 3-0.
Then I mosey over to the poker pit there (as it's 50 feet from the sports bar) and the 2/4 table was calling my name. But alas, there was a wait. So the nice lady there gave me a pager and off I went in search of entertainment. Again, the black jack table got me.Â
So I sit down and it turns into a nice hot shoe (for the players). I upped my bets from $5 to $25 and managed to have one of those action hands (split 8's and double each of them - and you know that means the dealer will make that 5 showing into a 21 somehow), but it worked and I was up another $260. Tips for the dealer and the pager goes.
So to the 2/4 table I go.
And it's your typical 2/4 game. I think I was able to win another hundred or so there. Basic play. KJ suited, hit the jack, bet the whole way and I was only paid off by 4 of the 7 callers I had the whole way. AK spades, I flop the A with the flush draw and it comes to me at 3 bets. I capped and flushed the turn, and it came to me raised again.
So yeah.
Good day ($1900 or so), just not a $100,000 day.Â
Good luck to anyone still in it.

Comments
I'd love to host another home game... it's been a loooooooong time. My poker table feels neglected. Sadly, my work schedule is kinda messed up right now... not sure when I'll be able to swing it.
And of course, whenever I do get time off, I immediately check to see if there are any major tournaments happening. (Sarnia, Windsor, and the upcoming Turning Stone trip are evidence of that.)
