Degree Tourney - Luckfest?

Last year I did well in the Degree Tourney so that might skew my comments a bit, but I thought i'd let you guys know that the changed blind structure has really hurt the better poker player.

I won a walk-up this morning and played the 6pm tourney. The blinds were as follows:

2000 starting chips, 20 minute levels, dealer was good (almost 2 rotations per level)

1. 25/50
2. 50/100
3. 100/200 25 ante
4. 200/400 50 ante
5. 400/800 75 ante
and so on...

I busted in level 4.

Last year as I recall was a slower structure which allowed a player to take flops and not have a pre-flop all-in-fest. But... that's unfortunately changed.

Just to let you guys playing the next few days know, build your stack EARLY and gamble where you can. There isn't time to play 'real' poker and with the blinds/antes doubling every 20 mins, you'll never have enough to be comfortable. Just jam it in there with cards you think are better than the other guy and pray he doesnt suck out.

Good luck! :D

  • This kind of blind raising reminds me of the great canadian poker tourney. This kind of blinds makes you push and jam as often as possible. "Normal" poker goes out the window.
  • Do people actually expect a better structure for a freeroll?
  • That is a good point.
  • Valid point it is a freeroll after all. I'm just mentioning that it isn't really poker.

Last year was considerably slower blinds and much better structure. Difference is that cutting 250 to 20 took 6 hours last year and 4 hours this year so they're just cramming in the bodies so people can claim they played poker in the tourney.
  • A friend of mine got busted out in 15 mins. yesterday. Some one before him went all-in, he had pocket Aces, so he went all-in (the other person had him covered) and they had pocket Kings.

He said they got the camera and showed the hands on all the monitors.

The guy spiked a King, the whole crowd cheered (say it made him feel stupid) and he was done. He said he was so pissed that he couldn't get out of the hall fast enough.
