Degree Poker Tourny Report

Considering I'm writing my report before the 1st session was scheduled to finish, do you want to guess how I did?

Anyway, I get up at 4:30am after working until 12:00 the night before. I grab quick shower, throw on my lucky clothes and head down to the casino.
This is nice, no traffic at all. I'm making great time.
I need some driving music and decide on The Trews - Den of Thieves (Quick review. Good CD go buy it. Support Canadian Music)

Anyway, I arrive at the casino, register and chit chat with some of the folks, like me there were a lot of people that played last year.

Time to start. I am table 23 seat 4.
Before the first card is dealt 2 tables are collapsed and several others only have 9 players. I'd guess we have about 210 of the expected 250.
My table is a good mix of players.

Now for the poker.
Hand 1. Blinds $25 - $50
I'm under the gun and look down to see cowboys. YeeHaa, good start.
I raise to $200.
Everyone folds and I pick up the $75 blinds.

A little later.. Blinds still $25 - $50
The button makes it $250 to go.
I'm big blind and look down to find Ad Kd.
I raise to $500. Button Calls. (Hmm, Ace or midpair I'm thinking)
Flop comes down 3c 4c 8h
I bet out $500. Button, without hesitation, goes all-in. Long thought process here. I decide I'm beat and fold leaving me with about $1000 left.

Not much happens for a few more hands, except that the guy on my right busted out so a camera guy came over to film it and hung out at our table for 4-5 hands. Maybe I'll get a shot during the opening montage.

Blinds $50 - $100
I'm in the small blind and everyone has folded.
I look down and see 7c 4c.
I have about $600 left in chips and decide to call and maybe see the flop.
BB checks.
Flop comes down Kh Kc 7d
I go all-in
BB calls quickly. I mutter something slightly profane to myself.....
He flips over K Q and I'm done.

I take the walk of shame and grab my gift bag. It's got a t-shirt, deodorant, deck of cards and some literature. Not too bad of a consolation prize for a freeroll tourny.

I decide to head over to Casino Niagara and play some low limit. No limit games going only 1-2NL. I decide to play and buy in for $100.

I fold for awhile and watch the 2 on my right make crazy raises with nothing over and over again. They loved to show their bluffs.

Anyway, I'm on the button and look down at Ah 10h, the maniacs only made it $5 to go so I call.
as does the SB and everyone else folds.
Flop comes down Qh Jh 3h
SB checks. Maniac makes it $20. I raise to $40. SB and Maniac Call
Turn 3c
SB checks. Maniac goes all in for about $80. I call and am all in. SB calls and is all in.
Huge Pot.
SB flips over QJ for top two pair. I flip over the Nut flush. Maniac mutters profanity to the table and doesn't flip over his cards.
River is a 4c

Huge Pot for me........? Nope. Guess what the maniac had?
That's right he had 34 and takes down the pot.

I get up and walk out and start to drive home. I was supposed to visit family but just don't feel like it.

Driving home to U2's Achtung Baby. Stop at the Driving Range on Highway 6 and whack the crap out of a bucket of balls. I feel better now.

So I managed to drive down to the falls, bust out of the tournament, lose $100, hit a bucket of golf balls, and drive home all before most people have lunch.

I hate poker.

I'm taking a break from playing for awhile.
(An hour or two should be good).

I hope everyone else does better than I did.

Good Luck to all.

  • Thanks for reporting Ercules. Im sorry it didn't go better.

While I was there, I was listening to some people who flew in from B.C. for this - damn that's hard core. Anyway, all tourneys have to have the 'first out' story. From what I heard the person was dealt AA, called by 10-10. The 10-10er ended up with quads. I am sure it was more dramatic than that but...
  • Yeah 10-10 vs AA is exactly as it happened. The annoucer was sitting at the table commentating the whole thing for the room.
  • how fast were the hands being dealt? I am wondering if it's 25/30 hand an hour fast or if it's snail poker.
  • We got 2 rotations per level.

    20 Minute levels.
  • Sorry about your luck, Erucles.

I like your choice in tunes, though.

    Johnnie
  • Interesting report. How about them Cowboys to start off. To bad the cards didn t keep coming for you. As far as your 1-2NL game, sounds like a few of my beats on line. Hope you sleep well tonight after this day.
  • Thanks very much for the detailed report. Any other tips for first-time visitors to the Niagara casinos?

    1) Is parking free at all the casinos?

    2) Is it a good idea to sign up for the membership cards before gambling in any game?

    3) If I want to play the 1/2 NL at Casino Niagara, is it best to wait for the free shuttle bus instead of driving?

    4) Which casinos have the sit-and-go tournaments and for how much?

    I'll answer what I can.

    1. If you a player's advantage card parking is free at fallsview. I don't know if it is the same at Niagara but, Niagara does have about 100 free parking spots. I've been several times and they have never been full but I go early in the day during the week.

    2. You might as well. It's free. Last year they gave them out at the tourny. Doesn't look like they are doing that this year though.

    3. Just drive it's only 5-10 minutes away. Leave Fallsview Casino and go back to Lundy's lane towards clifton hill. Go through the lights past clifton hill and follow the casino Niagara signs (just up on your right basically)

    4. I have no idea about the tourny's

Parking in the lot at the old casino is also free if you have the card as well.
