Degree Poker Championship Attracts 20,000 Online Entries
- Fans Invited On-Site to Draw for Minimum 350 Additional Seats -

-- TSN to air seven-part series in September --

Toronto, ON (May 1, 2006) – TSN and Degree for Men today announced a staggering 20,000 online entries have been logged at www.degreepoker.com from poker fans nationwide looking to compete in the second annual Degree Poker Championship, 20 percent more than last year.  The 2006 Degree Poker Championship begins Wednesday, May 3 through May 12 at the elegant Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, Ont.

A total of three thousand Canadians are set to compete in this year’s event.  Fans who did not receive a seat at the tournament through online entry are invited to make their way to the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort on May 3, 4, 5 and 7 to test their luck in draws for additional seats to the event.  Each day, a minimum of 80 seats will be drawn at 10:15 a.m. ET in the main lobby of the facility.  Fans are asked to arrive at the Casino between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET each day to enter the draws.  The draws are open to Canadians over the age of 21 (excluding residents of Quebec).

“There seems to be no end in sight for the popularity of poker in Canada,” said Steve Wolstenholme, General Manager, Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. “We only gave away 100 seats last year and we were inundated with entries, so we decided to up the ante to a minimum of 350 seats this year.”

The Degree Poker Championship is the country’s richest free-roll tournament with a first place prize of more than $100,000 and a chance to win an additional $1 million (all figures Canadian).  Along with the lump sum payout of $100,000, the grand prize winner will also compete for a chance to win up to $1 million in a dramatic final-hand Texas Hold ‘Em promotional showdown (also awarded as a lump sum payout).  Additionally, all final table contestants will be awarded cash prizes.

TSN and TSN HD will televise the Degree Poker Championship in prime time in September 2006, in seven one-hour episodes.  Each of the six playoff broadcasts features a table of six players, with the winner of each table moving on to the final championship round.  TSN will also televise encore broadcasts of all seven episodes in Western prime time.

TSN’s Michael Landsberg will host the Degree Poker Championship for the second consecutive year alongside returning card-by-card commentator, Alistair Cameron, the Salon Privé Manager at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort.

The inaugural Degree Poker Championship attracted a national average audience of 318,000 viewers*.  The event culminated with Liam Greig, a Vancouver online game designer, taking home a grand prize of $105,000.

This year’s tournament marks the second of a three-year deal between TSN Events and Unilever’s Degree antiperspirant brand, the event’s title sponsor.  The Degree Poker Championship has been developed in coordination with TSN Events, Segal Communications and Casino Amusements Canada.

Oh, god. Did they get ANY feedback on just how horrible this pairing was???
  • And how did they calculate these odds?
A - Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind $1,000,000.00 CDN (Odds are 1 in 595)
    B - Full House, Flush $20,000.00 CDN (Odds are 1 in 33.1)
    C - Straight, Three of a Kind $10,000.00 CDN (Odds are 1 in 20.7)
    D - Two Pair $5,000.00 CDN (Odds are 1 in 4.3)
    E - One Pair $2,500.00 CDN (Odds are 1 in 2.3)

first of all the odds quoted are for the lower hand (of each pair of hands quoted):
eg. 1 in 595 is the odds for quads, 1 in 33.1 is for a flush, 1 in 20.7 is for trips, etc...

these odds are calculated for the best 5-card hand in 7 cards dealt (ie. for omaha, holdem, 7cs, and any other 7 card game).  these odds are different than the standard ones quoted for 5 cards dealt.
  • Please see below...
  • Thank goodness. I hope that TSN will make it worthwhile for Daniel Negreanu to do it. If Negreanu is unavailable, hopefully a professional with a Canadian connection will do it, e.g., Evelyn Ng, Isabel Mercier, Gavin Smith or TJ Cloutier.

Confirmed tonight (Friday grave shift) that Alister will NOT be doing play-by-play for this year's broadcast. Hold your applause!!!

Who will be lending their voice to the airwaves?? Guess we'll have to wait and see (hear?!?!).
  • I actually spoke with Alister tonight (Sunday night) and he told me he IS doing the commentary with Landsberg again this year (hold your applause!). Sorry for the incorrect, 2nd-hand information previously reported.
