Daniel Negreanu's Protege

Did anyone watch the webcast? who ended up winning?

  • So this "lucky" guy is going to be tutored by the Kid. How well do u think he'll fair? With all of Daniel's help do u think this protege will be able to compete at a professional level and be able to become a "Professional Poker Player" ?
  • From Daniel Negreanu's blog:
Anyway, early on, Jerry, the 69 year old qualifer from ESPN, lost a monster pot. The flop came J-8-6, and Jerry, in the blind with J-6, got cold decked by Brian Fidler who flopped a set of eights.

At that point, I came into the room to grab Jerry and speak with him outside the room. Jerry didn't return, and I grabbed his chips and took them out of play.

    :
When we got down to six players, Jimmy Herrera, the Red Hot Poker Tour qualifier and fan favorite took a walk with me... he didn't return.

It is very suspicious that two of the Protege finalists were grabbed in the middle of the game without any explanation. I read that the 69-year old Jerry was nowhere to be seen in the after-party, so people are asking where Negreanu hid his body!. :D I have battled Jimmy in final tables before, but he has been warned not to say anything.

Did FCP rig the event to make sure that the winner would meet their desired profile, e.g., young single male instead of a 69-year old or an ethnic father? Did the two players collude, cheat or did something to offend Negreanu? Does anybody have inside information on what really happened?
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one with a conspiracy theory. I just could not see a senior, or a soccer mom, as protege. Needless to say, the final 2 were in the correct demographic, hmmmmm.....
  • I am still wondering about this. I read Daniel's blog and he mentions walking one guy out and removing his chips from play but never states why. What would you have to do to get kicked out? And how is it TWO people get kicked out?
  • They obviously must have received some type of buyout by Daniel to be taken out of the tourny.
  • My guess is that they were given a slimy buyout that they could not refuse.  I heard that Jimmy was given a seat in a big tournament in July.

Until Full Contact Poker comes clean on what really happened, I will never play at FCP with real money. :rage:

    Here were the final standings:
1st Brian Fidler: 27 years old, single, white, male, American.
    2nd Sol Bergren
    3rd Mathias Andersen
    4th Fern Chamberlain
    5th Clinton Kripki
6th Jimmy Herrera: immigrant from El Salvador, who only learned to play poker a few months ago, was deported out of the final table and is currently under a gag order.
    7th Frank Mutti
    8th Cory Vandivier
    9th Justin Lester
10th Jerry Carmicheal: 68-year old seems to have been forced into retirement & never heard from again.

"deported" "gag order" "forced out" "couldn't refuse" "never heard from again"

Kind of strong language for a promotional poker event, don't you think?
  • Maybe. But I think the issues being raised warrant an explanation.

Was this event supposed to find the BEST player for Daniel to take under his wing...

    Or just the RIGHT player??

Either way, I think FCP has some explaining to do.
  • I hear that the winner of the last one had to pretend to be his wife for 5 years
  • isnt he married to someone now?
  • apparently this final table will be shown on CTV Sportsnet in June
  • Does anybody know when the Protege Final Table will be broadcast? The protege Brian Fidler aka "Fid Poker" outlasted his mentor "Kid Poker" and got all the way to second place in a WSOP event this week, winning over U$200,000! :D Daniel Negreanu was out of the tournament early, as usual, and went back to his new addiction of playing golf. :'(

He blog is quickly becomming unreadable, but I wonder if what I'm experiencing (a disdain for reading about golf, cause it all sounds the same; I played 8 holes and birdied on the 7th for a 101 on the day!) is what people who hate poker experience (a disdain for reading about poker, cause it all sounds the same; I played 8 hours of poker and was up except that I got crushed on the river by a miracle two-outer!)
  • It would have been interesting if Fidler won, since he would have qualified for the Tournament of Champions (No idea how they're running it, 2 day event) but seems like 1st place from WSOP CIrcuit Tourneys go on to play, so maybe they include pre-lim or a 2 days SNG? lol

With the invites of Brunson, Chan, and Hellmuth
  • last year, wasnt it the top 20 of each circuit event + the final table of the main event?

    they changed that to this:

winner of each circuit event - 12 players
participants of final table at 2005 main event??? - 9 players
    6 sponsorship exemptions

all for a total of 27 players as opposed to 114 last year and 10 from the year before..

I guess Harrah's is just doing whatever they want year to year making up rules... why the hell would it be final table from 2005? they get tournament of champions 2 years in a row for making one final table... I guess this is taking place before the '06 main event?
  • The questions of "Where's Jerry?" and "Why Did Jimmy Get Bribed?" :D may finally be answered.  The "Daniel Negreanu Protege Show" will be broadcast by Rogers Sportsnet starting tomorrow.

Negreanu took time out from his two WSOP cash-ins this week to do some voice-overs for the Protege show.  In my Cogeco Cable region of Oakville/Burlington, here are the cable channels and times:
    - Wednesday 3-4 & 9-10 PM, RS West, ch. 152

  • Now that the Protege Final Table has been replayed several times, what are people's opinions of Negreanu bribing the players to quit and removing their chips from play?
  • Makes it seem more like a 'reality' show,
    than a poker tournament
