When to move up in to a bigger game?

Lets start with a 1-2 nl cash game, your bankroll $100. Lets say you win from the get go and slowly build your bankroll, at what $$$ amount of your bankroll should you start to consider moving to a higher game( I.E. 2-4 nl) ?

  • I sense some flippant replies coming so I'll get this in quick...

$100 is not a sufficient bankroll for 1/2NL. It isn't even sufficient for a buy-in. There are other posts here that discuss bankroll requirements for NL cash games. Please do a search. I believe Beanie has put up a very good post on this very subject.

    Best of luck to you.
  • Where I play (Seneca Casino, in Niagara Falls) the max you can bring to the table is $100. So if I sit down with $100 and win from the start and over a couple of sessions turn it into lets say $600, at what point should I move my game to 2-4 nl?
  • bankroll != buy-in

    or atleast, it SHOULD never.
  • Great now you tell me :D
  • 100$ = 5.50$ sit and go's or .25 .50 no Limit. I think it's something like 500times the bb is what you should have as a bankroll...
  • Generally you want atleast 15 buy ins for a proper bankroll. That would be $3000 for $2-$4 NL. If you are playing limit you want 300 x the BIG BET, so for $2-$4 limit that would be $1200.

The minute I sit down at the 2/4 table.

15 buyins would be $6000 by my math...
  • yes, a buy-in would typically be considered 100bb in a NL game..some games only allow 50bb max buy-ins, say a 2 4 NL with a 200max, i don't feel that this limited buy-in alters what you need as a bankroll, you should still have 1000-1500bb or 10-15 100bb buy-ins
  • I disagree with the 300x or 500x the BB. If you want to buy into a 1/2 for a $100......go for it. I do runs all the time. Sit down at a 1/2, 2/4 or whatever your game is........and play tighter than Dan Harrington. Once you get your stack built up, you can loosen up and play your own style. I've run $600 up to $17000 (and cashed) on Doyles Room just by jumping limits. Then I turned around and did the same on Poker Stars....built it up to around $15000 but ended up losing about 80% when I started to think I was unbeatable. If you think your game is good enough and your getting your money in REGULLARLY with the best hands, then IMO I strongly encourage it.

OK boys flame away if you like

  • I play poker on an amateur/recrational level and want to start taking it seriously. I do ok at the one 1-2NL, if I lose I lose a max of $100 and if I win I win generally $200-$300-$400 so overall I believe I am a head of the game( probably not though, LOL) but I'm saving and building a "bankroll" and want to know what the "pros" say about going to the next level. So, when I build my bankroll to $3000 from $100 it would be an approriate time to increase blind level. I'll let you know when I hit the next level.

First, if you plan on getting serious, start tracking your results. Stop "believing" how you're doing and know for sure.

Check out http://pokerforum.ca/forum/index.php?topic=9162.0 . Playing 1/2NL, personally I'd be trying to make about $30/100 hands, so whether winning $300 is good really depends on how long your sessions are and whether you are multi-tabling, etc. (although up is up ;) ).

We discussed this here: http://pokerforum.ca/forum/index.php?topic=7498.0 . Based on the 20 buy-ins standard, you should actually have $4K just to play 1/2NL, and based on my multi-tabling post I'd want $6K. Planning on moving up at $3K sounds a bit premature. You'd be going into the 2/4NL which normally has a $400 buy-in, so you'd only have 7.5 buy-ins, not quite enough.

As Wader mentioned, you can "take a shot", but I'd only try that with a portion of my bankroll. For your regular game, I'd stick to something your bankroll can absorb.

    Good luck!
