Comment on the play of these 4 please

Here's a hand I was involved in last night... 5/10 NL

Preflop: UTG limps, MP2 limps, Button limps, SB raises to $40, BB calls, UTG calls, MP2 calls, Button calls.

Flop: (5 players) pot:$200 :10d :8c :4d
SB bets $50, BB folds, UTG calls, MP2 calls, Button moves in for $230, SB folds, UTG calls, MP2 calls. (both UTG and MP2 have about $300 left)

No results yet... but I'm interested in opinions on everyones play to this point... here's what everyone had...

SB :qc :qs

  • I'm a newb but here are my thoughts...
It's an interesting hand...everyone has a piece in some way. Too bad the BB didn't stick around to make it more interesting :)
With the button moving in like that he is either protecting his hand, has PP, or is trying to buy the pot figuring that everyone else
is playing face cards. He has the flush potential as his insurance. I think this is a good play.
UTG is probably hoping for a showdown between himself and the Button. It would depend on his read on the Button but I think with top pair Ace kicker and the gutshot flush he figures he's in good enough position.
MP2 is a tougher call to make in my mind. With a pot sized raise and a caller it's not the greatest position to be in. He's gambling on the flush and has the chips to play with. Also, MP2 can recoup some of that money by taking UTG in if he hits the flush. I believe he thinks he is getting enough odds to make the call. From his perspective he has roughly 25% of the deck (diamonds + Qs + straight gutshot) as outs (although he doesn't know about BBs hand).

As I said, it would be interesting if the BB stuck around.
I could be way off though...
  • Q5 shoulda been out pre flop and even at the flop it's a weak hand... Ace Ten seems strong, but with two other's in the pot he'd have to consider a high pocket pair is out... The flush draw is drawing to the nuts, but even so should lay it down to a big bet since he wont get pot odds to call... Or i dunno, :D
  • SB with QQ needs to raise more preflop ($80 sounds ok) and pot the flop, that's an awful laydown to the push.
UTG should be raising the flop strong (pot-sized) to price out draws since there's no reason to think he doesn't have the best hand. If someone comes over the top of this bet he can probably fold unless they're very tricky/aggressive and he puts them on a flush draw.
MP2 shows us why Q5s is a monster, though once he flops a flush draw the way the action goes he's pretty much committed and played it right.
Button played the hand correctly, except for not having more money in front to make a stronger play at the pot on the flop.
  • Sounds like a juicy game. How many thousand did you clear?

None of them seem to have enough chips in front of them to play effectively.

The $40 raise pre-flop doesn't make sense. Is it going to chase anyone out? Does he want to go against 4 players out of position? Then he folds on the flop with an overpair? Sheesh.

Why didn't ATs raise after the flop? If he thinks he's behind why is he chasing?

Q5s is a major donor. I love guys that chase with terrible hands.

I don't fault the play of A8s. He's probably getting proper odds with good position. Still a mediocre starting hand but a pretty good flop.
  • UTG(AcTc): I probably raise this preflop or dont play at all in EP. After limping he's faced with calling $30 more into a $110 pot getting 3:1 on his money so I dont really fault the call. I dont like his post flop play however. If he thinks his AT is good on the flop why not raise? Instead he calls the initial bet and another big bet for nearly half of his stack and he still has no idea where he stands.

SB(QcQs):With two limpers in front (EP and MP) QQ needs to make it $60-70 to go for starters. Secondly, he bets $50 into a $200 pot which is too small: he should make it about $125-$150 to go on the flop.

MP2(Qd5d)I dont know wtf Q5 of diamonds is doing in that hand to begin with. Poor preflop play and postflop.
Button(Ad8d): This guy probably played the hand the best out of anyone. He limps a decent hand on the button with position and then calls $30 more into a $170 pot (nearly 6 to 1 on his money). Nice flop for him flopping the nut flush draw + bottom pair. I like his push here on the flop. There's a small chance he may take down the pot right there and if he's called he may have up to 14 outs to the best hand ( 9 for the flush, 3 aces and 2 8s)

Win % Assuming all 4 hands showdown (numbers from cardplayer):

    AcTc 18.78%
    Ad8d 38.78%
    Qd5d 1.35%
    QsQc 40.12%

A8 is only slightly -EV in this situation but it's basically even plus with his play there's a chance he gets better hands to fold (like QQ) which case the win %s look like this:

    AcTc: 52.16%
    Qd5d: 10.41%
    Ad8d: 37.34%

Again still -EV but I still like the play.
  • SB's play with the QQ preflop, and on the flop is just horrendous... i think that all other hands were played correctly, shows you why you shouldn't be getting into raised pots with Q5s (you end up drawing dead or something)
