Mid to High Pockets against Calling Stations.

Just wonder how people would play mid to high pockets (9's, 10’s, Jack’s) against a group of Calling Stationsin Early, Mid and Late position.

The rocks will tend to limp with suited connected, Ace-Rag, and Ace-Suited. They will tend to defend a limped bet?

Well some one who will call any bet and then keep calling on the flop, usually not folding until the river.

    "Calling Station"...

Normal ABC play. Raise 3-4x BB pre-flop (possibly limp with 99/TT in early).  Force the initial mistake in case they hit their hand, and also try to find out if they are limping with monsters to induce action.  After the flop, watch out for scary flops - if you're hand is likely best, keep betting.  The toughest choice (to me at least) is determining how much variance you want.  If a K comes and you have JJ, you could be betting for value or increasing the pot for their K, and their constant calling won't let you know the difference.  Personally, I keep betting until they give me a reason not to (or the board is really scary, like straight and flush both possible with an overcard or two scary).

Thanks Beanie, just wanted some re-assurance that I was doing the correct thing. It is frustrating to be making those bets having them called and seeing the people catching their Aces.

Well it is not just Tony. It’s AJ, Derek, Terry, Gus, Eleanor, Jeff, Gre...oh...wait....never mind....I shouldn't name names.

In all fairness I have been running up into these types of problems at different games a lot lately and have been asking myself have I been making the correct play by raising it 3-4 times the blinds pre-flop? As a lot of the times one or two overs fall the calling stations start betting like mad and end up folding feeling like I just wasted some money by raising it up.

  • Play em strong all times. Fold when the flop comes an ace. Had QQ in 25. 50 from 1.50 to 4, get two calls. Flop comes Ace 9 4, first to act bets 7.50, i fold, other guy goes all in. First guy has Ace 7 Off other has 77.
  • I think it is important to mix up play of every hand. Sure, you could raise it everytime you see it but what if you get bumped all in, then what do you consider your a dog to any overpair or do you figure your in a cointoss situation? I like it better when i call then hit my set card then jam it hard in hopes to prevent the rundown ( sometimes this doesnt work all the time). Plus if you call and the flop comes overcards the hand is easier to get away from. I find that when I raise these hands preflop i feel i have to call down the rag ace that hit the flop when i know they have the ace. Most times when someone has ak, aq and they raised preflop they most likey bet the flop to make it appear they didnt miss a very key raising point here cause you need to push them off. will finish later
  • To continue...then if they still insist on calling you down and they get there no fault on you cause you bet your hand and you will make money in the long term on those players that choose to rundown overcards. That is my take on mid pockets. By the way when ever I get pocket jacks they hit the muck face up preflop...lol
  • If you raise and you have a feeling that no matter what the raise is these calling stations are going to call then I would just limp in myself and hope I hit the set, either that or the ALL IN which obviously the wrong play, but it is so much fun.
