Talkin' about Tells

Hey guys

Ever try and fake a tell to throw off the guys in your regular game? I always think about ways I can try and concoct a phony tell to fake out the other guys at the table. I actually came up with something subtle and brilliant, but I forgot to factor in the mind-numbing amounts of alcohol and weed that my friends use while playing, so they are never gonna take the bait...unless of course the tell has something to do with fresh bags of Doritos or Pizza...

Anything more obvious is just beneath me. One of my buddies actually stoops to the "verbal fake-outs" when he is really desperate, like saying something like "Man, did you keep this deck in the freezer last night...because these cards are colder than a motherfu**er," when he has a huge hand. That's just sad.

On the other hand, do any of you have friends with brutally visible tells? I have a couple of friends that I have a very good read on, and I usually know when to lay down hands against them. This kind of thing can save you enormous amounts of cash over the year, especially if you have been playing with the same group of guys for a long time.

  • Yeah, I have one friend with a pretty relaible tell. When he moves all-in, I know whether or not he wants a call around 80% of the time. Both involve him nodding excessively with a funny grin on his face...the difference is that when he's bluffing (or isn't very sure about his cards) he tends to clasp his hands together fairly tightly, almost like he tried to clap with superglue on his palms.

    Recent example:

Last weekend, I'm the BB so I check with a 7-10 offsuit, and the flop comes 10-10-2. I open the betting and get a few callers, my friend included. The turn is a King. I bet again (heavier this time), and everyone but my friend folds. He ponders it for a while, then pushes all-in. I'm kind of caught off guard, so I go into staredown mode. He starts nodding, as usual (I wish I could post a video of it...it's hilarious!). I keep watching, but he looks pretty relaxed (no tight hands). I know he doesn't have a 2, and he's looking pretty comfortable with his decision. I put him on the full house, tens over kings. I announce my fold, and throw my 10 card into the pot. He turns over his K-10 offsuit, and takes the (smaller-than-he-wanted) pot. I felt like Matt Damon in Rounders when he figures out Teddy's tell and tells him that he's "gonna lay down a monster."

Now that I've posted this, I sure as hell hope that he doesn't read this post, as he visits this forum once in a while! Plus, I'm sure he's spotted a tell of mine, too, so maybe I shouldn't be bragging! :)
  • Ja, I'd post all my friends' tells, but I fear that they may read this some day. :)

    hork.
  • When I play at the Brantford Casino I have found that players become much more talkative when they have hit a nice hand/flop. I guess they become more confident with their social abilities all of a sudden.

I love that feeling when you do make the right call and walk away from potential disaster. Nicely done!

I've noticed that too. When I play I'm always silent to eliminate giving off any tells.
