Where should I buy a new laptop??

My gf is looking for a laptop, nothing fancy and under $1k. I've had bad experiences with hp/compaq. I know all the online places to look and compare, just wondering if there are smaller companies that I should check out.

where abouts are you located? a relative of mine runs a business out of his home, dealing with every aspect of computers, including building and selling software for them.. if you're nearby, in the GTA, his prices are good, and quality of his machines are excellent.
