Good deal for me?

I was really tired last night (the deal was made at 5:30am) so I have no idea if the deal we made was entirely fair. I did have to do an extensive amount of negotiating to get the amount I did and I still wasn't completely happy.

Here's some of the information.

$11 MTT on Party. 4 left out of 519.

Regular Payouts:
1. $1245.60.
2. $778.50.
3. $467.10.
4. $337.35.

Chip counts by seat position (it's just coincidence that it's arranged in numerical order):
1. 667818.
2. 374890.
3. 318826.
4. 195466. (me)

Blinds were 8k/16k with 400 antes.

Final payouts (approximations):
1. $920
2. $710
3. $620
4. $570 (me)

I decided to take this deal for the following reasons:

1. I really wanted to use Party's dealmaking software. I've made two final tables since the software came out but neither of them allowed dealmaking.
2. Shortstacked with chip leader to my left influenced my decision a little.
3. Tired. It was 5:30am and when I finally got them to concede in giving me more, I took it as a moral victory and went to bed.

Reasons I regret taking the deal this morning:

1. $200 isn't much money in the long run. $1200 would've been really nice though.
2. I felt I was the strongest player at the table for several reasons. I probably wasn't as tired as they were (I'm used to playing late) and it was incredibly obvious they were playing tight to limp to an extra $100 or $200. They were a little too eager to deal and I think I should've picked up on it and maybe continued playing, even with my shortstack. Had the chip leader been on my right, I think I may have chosen to continue playing.

I don't really have much experience with deal making so did I get a good deal here? I've read enough material to know that shortstacks get screwed on a straight chip count chop which is why I pushed really hard for picking up extra money. I mean, all I have to do is get lucky and double up once and I'm right in there again.

Funny story about the final table. I actually got disconnected right after the 10th person busted. I had 130k in chips, which was about average, but the blinds were big enough that it'd be a big chunk of my stack if I missed a couple orbits. I finally get back on 20 minutes later and there are now only 5 left and I have 140k in chips. That was pretty sweet although it put a dent in my plans of going for the win.

  • Better than 3rd place money , blinds 8k/16k with your stack at 19K. Me personally, I'd be happy.
  • I think it's a pretty good deal. You have 12.55% of the chips in play and 12.55% of the remaining prize money is $354.98
  • I don't know what you were expecting form the deal but you got the best of it. I am surprised you got that much. You got 20% of the remaining cash. That's more than fair. Good going on the deal. Be happy.
  • Great deal, better than the original 3rd place money. If I were on the other side, I'd never give a deal like this (although I don't do deals anyway :) ), so take the money and run!

was actually 195K, but i still think it was a good deal. It was so late, you got some nice cash for bowing out, and you mighta gone all in with the best hand but lost to the chip leader anyways as is common in online poker
  • misread the numbers in the original post, like most of the flops I see :D. Still a good deal.
  • You got a sweet deal. No way I would have given up that much if I was CL. He has almost 50% of the chips, and yet he has to give up $325?? No way Jose.
  • Well.. the big thing I remember from reading articles and posts about deals is that the shortstack usually gets screwed when the prize money is divided up based on chip counts. That's why I really pushed for getting more money for the simple fact that I was still in the tournament.

Oh, well. It makes me feel better now that I know the consensus is that I got a good deal. I was really upset this morning that I didn't play it out.
  • As steve Miller says: Take the money and run. I usually don't cut deals, the one exception I made was supposed to be a winner take all but we cut a deal when we got down to 3. However we played it out with the deal being based on 1 2 and 3. At 5:30 am I would be very happy with that.
  • I like the deal, especially since you said you were tired and it was 530 am, you're obviously not going to play your best game, take the deal and go to bed!
  • Good deal.
You got a bigger % than the chips you had.
You had barely 12BB lefts....unless you got lucky here you'd probably have to push it all in soon on a wing and a prayer.

    Nice going BTW.

  • Looks like a good deal. I myself would not take it. I don't like deals. You need aggresion short handed and from reading another post of yours I think you have the aggresion to take this tourney down. Get all your chips in 1 time with the best and you jump to 2nd if you tangle with the chip leader your in 1st. I just think hey, I've been playing my ass off for this long and now I'm going to chop for fourth....no way.

Thats exactly how I feel in most situations, however he mentioned he it was really late and he was tired, and he had a shitty position with the CL to his left. Without fatigue being a factor I woud have played on.
  • Never understood why chip leaders made such crazy deals when they have such a big cheap lead... And don't reply with , oh he might be tired, this is poker people! There's no such thing as tired or hungry when dealing with poker!
  • Given your read on the table that you were better and they were playing tired and tight...
I think the deal is horrible.
You only got 50 bucks more than a chip count chop and you said yourself, chip count chops are terrible for the shortstack.  Especially if you think you're better than the table.  If you don't mind playing for a while as you said you were used to playing late, then you should definately reject that deal.  Like you said, locking up another 200 bucks isn't life changing money, so go for the win.

Come on WILL! I have faith!
Congratz on the nice finish though :D
  • I actually made a little more than $200 more than I would have if it was a straight chip count chop.
I agree though. I probably should've played it out. I just really really wanted to use that deal making software. :)

Thanks to everyone for the comments.
  • no, you made 50 more than a chip count chop

    1245 + 778 + 467 +337 = 2827 total in the prizepool

now since there's 4 people left, everyone has 337 locked up so we take that off the prizepool

    2827 - 4 (337) = 1479

so there's 1479 left to chop up.

so you have 12.55% of the chips, so of the 1479 you are entitled to 185.

Add that to the 337 that you are entitled to, a chip count chop would give you 522, you got 570 so you got 50 more than a chip count chop which isn't THAAAAAAAAAAAT bad, but considering your read on the table and the fact that you're nasty, I think its a bad deal.

  • Oh, whoops. My bad.
    You're right.
  • If you are not sure, then it was a bad deal. If it was good, you would not be questioning it.
