WSOP or WPT?

Sorry if this thread has already been made.

Wich do you watch more of/which do you prefer?

I prefer the WPT, i find the commentary much better, aswell as the players and overall quality of players (both skillwise and manners) and I find they show more bluffs and good plays, rather than the WSOP's all in only type show.

How bout you?

  • I agree about the WPT - the quality just seems better (both the play and the production). With WSOP, while the production isn't quite as good, I prefer the play in the smaller events to the Main Event. And overall, I probably enjoy (and have learned the most) from High Stakes Poker.
  • The reason the WPT is able to show more bluffs and good plays, while still ensuring each player's knockout is shown, is because each show is given a 2 hour timeslot. At the same time, each WSOP event is only given 1 hour, and with commercials, interviews etc, its hard to show many hands other than players' knockout hands.
  • i always like WSOP better, but mostly because of the cathy tune

I never saw her on any of the broadcasts ... is she hot?
  • I think he meant "catchy tune"

  • duh, I was trying to be witty, guess that didn't work. Did you forget that I have a sense of humor Greg?
  • Anytime I don't have to listen to Dave Foley (other than old KITH episodes) I'm happy.
  • Actually, watching the EPT is my favorite. It keeps the two hour format and I'm quite in tune with the dry humor from the hosts.

Agreed! They show most of the hands "where poker is played", like pre-flop raises and folds, not just the all-ins or big pots.
  • Lately the poker show I most look forward to is High Stakes Poker. It's such a different dynamic from tournament play. It's very interesting.

The commentators aren't that great though - and Gabe Kaplan looks like a lizard. *shudder*

I think you mean sense of humour, Adam.  This is Canada's Poker Forum, after all. ;)

I totally agree. I always find myself straining to hear the players conversation through the commentators "noise".
  • Alight, lets turn this thread into a "Which T.V poker do you watch, which do you like the most and why?"

What's High Stakes Poker, and where/when's it broadcasted.

Ya i somehow didn't think about the fact that WPT is 2 hours while WSOP is 1. That'll make the big difference i guess, but i still get the feel that WPT is much more of a class tournament than the WSOP. I also really like EPT. I find John Duthe to be one of the best poker commentators. Always has great advice and try's never to tell the audience that he won the Poker Millions :)

Worst by far is Celebrity Poker. My god i despise Dave Foley and Phil Gordon. I feel like i'm getting worse when i watch them play.
  • What's High Stakes Poker, and where/when's it broadcasted.

High Stakes Poker is the show created where players play No Limit Hold'em Cash game, rather than the traditional no limit hold'em tournament
Players put their own money at stake, and chips at the table represent actual cash value (and you will often see "bricks" of cash on the table as well). I believe the blinds are $300/$600 with $100 ante, and the minimum buy-in is $100K

Its broadcasted through GSN, but most of us who watches it downloads it through torrents (unless GSN is available on digital cable or Bell ExpressVu, but I don't have either so I can't confirm)
  • Now that sounds like some serious poker!!! Wow i'm gonna do a little more research on that, if it's not on T.V i'll definitly start dling some episodes... So i guess it must be only the professionals right? Is it that crazy table I've heard about : Brunsen, Chan, Ivey etc?
  • The usual suspects are there (Brunson, Greenstein, Negreanu, Chan), but haven't seen Ivey yet. Don't think he's part of this season. You also get other players like Jerry Buss who don't play much tournaments but play in the higher limit cash games.
  • As long as we are on the subject, the WORST poker shows have GOT to be Poker Den and Celebrity Poker. I despise these shows.

Oh, and that crazy show on CGTV where they sit around and talk about the online games? What's up with that? That Tina is a hottie, but that guy Devo? What does he know about poker? He probably hasn't even seen the inside of a casino. :D:D
  • haha too true too true :)

What bugs me the most about the European poker that is show none stop on CGTV, is that they have a serious problem with the sound quality making it impossible to hear what the players are saying, and sometimes the announcers too. They also dont alwasy check the players whole cards, so you have betting until the turn without seeing someones cards, or an all in and you only see what they have after the cards are flipped up... Yes it's kinda cool sometimes seeing what they were betting on after the betting is done... but that ain't for me :)

One thing i despise about WSOP, is how they follow Phil Helmuth around all day whenever hes in a tournament. Grr
  • No way, the WORST is anything produced in Canada.(sorry Dave, you're a pawn in this). I can't put a finger on it, but something about the productions, any of them, seems cheap.
  • I prefer WPT. The production as a whole is much better.
The worst IMO is Poker Million. The commentary is just horrendous. I still watch though because I'm a junkie.
  • Im feelin the WPT but I hate the britsh poker open I just can't stand it. Like the production is garbage an like the 1 hand the guy was all in an drawing dead on the river but yet they still made the dealer sit there wait a few minutes while the announcers still tried to make it dramatic an dude was the 1st one it it was bad. There is another 1 I don't like the pokerhost 1 ultimate poker challenage or something like that.
