Player Mistakenly Says Fold .... What would you do ?

This happened the other night ..

Final table 3 handed, Flop is KJQ, Short stack goes ALL IN, me (chip leader) folds, mid stack says ... "Fold ... I mean Call ... I flopped the Nut Straight" showing his A10.

I don't know if anyone else caught that but I did. And I knew he obviously meant to say Call but I guess the wires got crossed and he blurted out Fold while showing his A10 and quickly corrected himself by saying Call.

What should the ruling be to this ? No one said anything about it. Neither did I. I don't know if it was because it was so obvious he meant to say call or if noone else heard it. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

Rux

  • I think this is another of those situations that will pay out differently depending on where you are. On one hand the verbal declaration could be considered binding, and i\his hand would be considered folded.

It sounds like you guys are probably friends and since it was obvious that he wouldn't fold the nuts, you let it go.

If I was playing in a bigger tournament, and my life was on the line, I may want to see the guy held to his declaration, no matter how obvious it was.

Actually, maybe the Prophet can sound off on this, I'm sure he has a standing rule for this situation for the Westside Events.

  • If i'm playing with friends i'll generally let that stuff slide but stress the importance of verbally declaring what you're doing before you do it, and what ever you declare is your action. I'm trying to organise is a fun/big size for my experience tournament and for that it'll be what ever you say is your action, so in this case he'd have to fold the hand.
  • If you want to be strict about it, then his verbal declare should stand.

However, in a friendly game the more sensible ruling would be that his intent was to call and he just flubbed it...

Hey, is this the same raging drunk that overturns tables? If so, give him what he wants....

    :D:D

No it wasn't him. If it was I would have let the fold stand :D
  • on second thought no you're right I would let him have whatever he wants. Crazy !

In a West Side event it would be a fold no matter what.  If I am playing against Blazin72 or Shopsy and Stpboy, heads up, it would be a fold, any where else it would be a Mulligan and the player would be allowed to continue the hand.

  • In a large tournament, declaring is binding. In friendly home games with buds, and it was fairly obvious what he meant, let it slide, but caution him for next time.

I remind all league members that there IS a rule stating verbal is binding, so don't any of that crap on Thursday night!! :D
  • If there was any reason to believe he said "fold" to see a reaction from another player (the all-in guy or if there was a guy to act behind him), then the fold should stand. Obviously with the nut straight, this is unlikely. Otherwise, I agree with the answers above.
