Teh gr8tst hnd evr or Advanced Rebuy Strategy

OK I'm at Trevor's last night $10 buy-in unlimited $5 rebuys for 1000 chips whenever you drop below 1000. I push from 2nd UTG after a rebuy and get no calls moving me up to 1060 chips (blinds are 20/40). Now's when the games begin.
"Oops, that was a tactical mistake" I say, referring to the fact that now I won't drop below 1000 chips so I can rebuy when the blinds hit. So the obvious plan is the following: Double the blinds with any 2 cards UTG to get to 980 then give up assuming Idon't hit anything and rebuy to 1980. Then I can push any 2 in the big blind and hope to double up, and if I bust there I can rebuy, fold my small blind, and rebuy back up to 1980 chips anyways. But I know that the pinhead knows this, so I'm also setting up a trap when he tries to steal my doubling if I have a hand you see. So I look down at my cards UTG on the next hand and double it to 80, leaving me 980 back as planned. Moose calls, and the Pinhead makes it 1000 to go, not too surprisingly. It's folded back to me and I begin to sing "I trapped the pinhead, I trapped the pinhead" as i raise him my last 60 chips. Moose folds, and the pinhead sighs as he throws inthe extra 60.
"You actually have something?"
"Of course." I say as I table the mighty big lick, 69o.
The board bricks out and my 9 high holds up. The rest of the table looks very confused.

I think a good part of the confusion was caused by me looking at it and saying
"You sure did, you're ahead" (and then showing 85o)

IIRC the board actually came QJx98 so it wasn't actually 9 high. Good players remember things like this ;)

I know, but the story sounds better my way you ass :D
  • Sounds like a stupid structure, most games these days you can rebuy at the buy-in or less thus avoiding the idiocy of losing one chip to rebuy.

The kind of good players who push when they can't beat 9-high?  :D

It is a "stupid" structure but intentionally, the reasoning being to encourage chaotic play.  It is very amusing when you get a whole bunch of people trying to get back to the rebuy level, but they're forced to pay a premium for that right.  This wouldn't be good for a normal (and more serious) game, but it is good for a very fun/casual/loose game.  This was the second "chaos", and I haven't received complaints from any of the players who were in either tourney.

I don't get it, why are people fighting to get back to rebuy level, they can just bust then donk off a single chip then rebuy.
  • Sorry to briefly hijack Mike.

You need to get rid of 5, but there is almost no pot uncontested pre-flop. Trying to unload that 5 is difficult depending on your position, as it can often cost a few hundred to call the raise just to unload it, and in some cases a few all-ins in front. The only real way is to wait for your blind, but many don't like to wait the 5 mins :) . It's really hard to explain the atmosphere, you'd have to be there, but it is a riot.
