Degree - Blind Structure/Top Player Format Ideas
As a follow-up to Zithal's post below, how would you play differently based on the given blind structure where your objective is to finish in the top 20 (round 1) out of 250 players and top 36 (round 2) out of 240 players? In round 2 your chips are reset at 2,000 with the same blind structure. In most tournaments your goal is to typically win the tournament or make the final table (at least). Any different strategies to consider in this tournament format? I guess some players will be playing very tight so this might be an opportunity to steal the blinds and build your stack slowly before it becomes a push fest.

Yikes!
Somehow they've been able to create less play this year than in last (rounds are now 20 minutes instead of 30 minutes)... check out the prelim rounds...  I've include the blinds along with the M of a starting stack...
Starting Stack: $2,000
Blinds (20 minutes)
25-50Â M=27
50-100 M=13
100-200(25) M=3.6
200-400(50) M=1.8
The jump from level 2 to 3 is insane (just like last year).  There's no way they'll be able to do a full rotation in one blind level (20 minutes with 10 player tables), so a valid strategy may just be to do nothing for the first 40 minutes, ($2,000 down to $1,775), then push at will starting on level 3, when the chips on the table jump from $150 to $550 pre-deal.
Any other thoughts on the format?

The blind levels were 30 minutes long so we had a bit more time to get lucky in the first couple levels. I got paid off nicely with a nut flush v. lesser flush hand and was up to over 4k just before the evil 100-200(25) level hit. This is where I made my mistake.. I remained tight and try to steal the blinds and antes enough. Of course, there was that old guy at my table that was really messing me up..
Here are some reports that were filed last year. May help to give you some idea on what to expect...

Embrace the jump from the 2nd to 3rd level and get aggressive. Be one with the bingo. Use the first two levels to determine who the weak-tights are and push them off pots.
In the first qualification rounds no need to get to tricky, most players arent paying much attention to image or anything anyways. Just play a good solid and aggressive game and you should be able to make it through.
If the 2nd round is similar to last year you get some extra chips to start with. You can make a bit more moves here. Just play these two rounds like satellite tourneys.
Then came the semi finals which were SnG tourneys. You can make so more moves here, and only first place goes onto the next round so just play for the win.

Now that would be a thing of beauty!
