Shannon, you would be proud

After Day 2 of Bristol Legends ended, we played a 9 person SNG, top 3 pay out.
Down to myself and John Adams and we started HU with me having a 20K-16K lead
with only 200-400 (50) so plenty of play. I'm not even sure how we managed to get
to HU at this level since we started at 25-25 with 4K each, but the action was a little furious.

This hand happens maybe 15-20 hands into the HU match when we were almost dead even in chips:
(he had me covered by 1000)

I limp on the button with :as :6h as I had been raising fairly regularly on the button and decided
to just play this a little slower and try to get paid off if I flop an ace.
John raises to 1800 total which I call. I don't feel like he has anything particularly strong and I know
he can easily make this raise with any 2 cards but I don't feel like it's a complete garbage raise.
Best guess is 2 big cards that he feels could be the best hand and wants to take the lead in the action

Flop :kh :9c :3h        (not 100% sure but it was K9x with top and bottom hearts)

Action: Check, Check.

Turn :7h

John bets 2400 into a pot of 3750 and I strongly feel like he's trying to take the pot with some sort of
drawing hand. I decide to raise to 6000 total, either to take the pot now or get a free showdown if he calls.
He does call and at this point I feel very strongly like he has a big heart.

River :7s

I consider this a brick obviously and John pushes for just over 9K. I count out my chips and at this point realise
I have 8500 left and would be done if I was wrong, but for some reason cannot shake the thought that he has
something like QJ or QT with the :qh.

After probably a few minutes pass and me announcing to the table that I want to make "the most retarded call of my life"
and watching the other players left flip through the deck and try to figure out what cards are out, I show my :As only,
most of the table looks at me like this hand should have ended 10 minutes earlier and then I announce call.

The table looks at me like I've gone completely insane (it's about 1 AM and I've been at Rob's for 12 hours now so that's entirely possible)
and then John says "It's good", and when I say ":qh right?" he tables :qd :jh   (about as close as I could ask for)

Anyway, mostly a brag post since today I finally had the balls to trust my reads (even though it cost me in the main tourney :( )
but I also thought Shannon would get some enjoyment out of seeing me take down LoJ :)

Feel free to shred my play, call me a donk, or just say "What a Pinhead" (I'm looking at Watts on this one), but after tonight I can
say that nothing feels better than trusting your read in front of a group of poker players you play with way too much, and being
confident enough to make that call knowing how stupid you're going to look if you happen to be wrong.
Next time I'll just have to time it so the camera is watching the good read instead of the bad one.

2 of the people sitting at the table shaking their heads when I first exposed my Ace...donks :)

<=======still shaking my head hours later
  • You showed me an ace and Mario and I were just like, "What the hell? Why are you asking...FA FA FA FA FA FA FOLDDD!"

But you called and it paid off. You're just lucky I bet into your quads in the beginning or I would be playing with your little pink button while you sit there OUT....Booyawkasha. ZERO innuendo. Really. ZERO. I honestly should just change it, thats how little I meant the innuendo.
  • That's a classic LOJ move, move in on the river trying to represent something big. Great call, it's beautiful to be able to trust your reads that much and even nicer to not have to really worry about what anyone is going to think of you if you're wrong.

  • Nice Hand, Brad!!

Having a solid read on a player is a great thing!!

  • I even said to someone earlier saturday on the first break of the main tournament that i hate having brad at my table. "He's really got my number" is what i actually think i said.

Damn you and your skills...... and that pointy head of yours.....!!! (is that man flirting?)

I wanted to get HU with you brad, and i wanted to beat you. i thought if i give you that pot, you woudl have too much of a lead for me to feel comfortable with. i was really just looking to take that pot down.

and although i'm pretty sure you have alot of my play figured out, i think what you described was more a read on the situation, not a read on me specifically.

a read on me specifically being a tell of some sort perhaps???

    anyways, great call.
and good luck with play against me in the future!!! BOO YAH!!
