At least I can buy myself a cup of coffee ...

Hi all! I've been lurking for awhile & I figured it's about time I said hi. I've been playing hold'em for about six months now. I play in a small home game about once a month and yesterday I finally moved from the play money to real money tables online. Which explains the title of the post; I earned enough money yesterday to buy myself a cup of coffee.

I learned that even a few mistakes can seriously harm the profitability of your day. I should've earned $3+/hr ... instead I earned a measly $0.25/hr. :'( Oh well, as long as I learn from my mistakes and no one lost any blood I guess it's all good. Although, I am still pretty choked about how I managed to spectacularly self-destruct three spots out of the money in a MTT. "Don't do anything stupid", I said to myself. Three hands later, I did something (incredibly) stupid. Two hours down the drain. *sigh*

  • Welcome to the forum. We all make mistakes from time to time, you recognized you made the mistake and obviously learned from it, which means you already took steps from preventing the mistake to be made again.

Don't worry, theres a member on the forum who made $1.45 with quad aces in a home game, so don't feel too bad :D
  • Thanks fir leaving the name out Wes but it was a $1.55. That XL coffee was the best coffee I ever had.

$1.59 now at Tims. You got some more work to do.
  • I am never too upset with a session where I am up. I prefer to keep track of my stats over the long run – therefore if I play for only a few hours and don’t go down I am happy – because if I go up my next session I do not have to subtract the losses from the previous session.

I generally play on the 50 or 100PL tables.

Throughout the week I usually end up just slightly up – I consider these my days of “learning” – but I generally don’t take any big hits either. Then when I play on Thursday through Sunday my session profits are considerably greater, so on a weekly basis I remain up.

Previously, I would play the same way during the week as I did on the weekends. But I found that 1 or 2 of those days I could take some big hits– meaning I would sacrifice my weekend earnings. I was literally making money from Thursday through Sunday just to give most of it back Monday through Wednesday.

I have learned to adjust my play on the weekdays (when there are fewer fish). I generally play only the 25PL or 50PL and use it as a practice for the weekends – where I personally find there is more money available.

Oh and I would definately hold out until I had made enough to get the Hazelnut shot!
  • We all start somewhere. G'luck with making the jump from fantasy to "reality"..

Just remember that while you are learning and making mistakes, you are making them at a small limit and thus, paying less to learn them unlike other who jump right into the big game and pay thousands.
  • Welcome to the forum! the way I look at it if you play for 15min or 4 hours if you leave up its a good thing does not matter if its $1 or $10 or$100 sure its nice to win more but even winning just a bit adds up in the long run.

    Been there, done that.
  • Yeah, I guess overall I'm happy that I'm not down anything ... a small win is better than a small (or big) loss :-) In the big picture one day isn't going to matter either way. I'm sure there's going to come a day when I wish I was up a lousy buck or so! LOL
