late tourney play

The last westside tourney i was involved in a hand with 21 players left. Blinds are 1000/2000 with 200 ante i believe. I'm UTG + 1 and i have 26 000 in chips. Average stack is 34k. UTG raises too 4000 and i have pocket 8's with 7 players at my table. How should i play this hand?

  • What is your read on the player raising? What is his table image? Has he been raising/stealign alot?
  • She's been tight but also with a short stack of 14k. Wasn't worried about her, the people behind me.
  • generally id say allin or fold, 8's are pretty good 7 handed and u dont want to call and let other ppl in cheap

depends on ur read of her, whats her minraise utg mean? big pair? or is she scared? how tight is she? is there even the slightest chance shed fold? Do you want to race? If u win the race can u bully ur table? Also, is she hot? hmm ignore that last one
  • As Ron said, he wasn't worried about the UTG raiser, but more about the players who will act behind him.

I guess he depends on the table, stack sizes etc. You can probably make a re-raise if you are worried about the players behind you to isolate the action, but again you risk the chance of someone waking up with a monster.
  • Depends on your read of course. If you truly think you have UTG beat, then push. You have the person covered and force everyone behind you to have a monster to call. That being said an UTG min raise from a person so short stacked would scare the hell out of me. Is this person really going to fold, leaving herself with 10k when the blinds are about to hit her? To me that bet screams, "I want action". If you know otherwise, then go with your gut of course. On the other hand, if you feel you have weak blinds on your left and you can steal easily, then maybe you'd let this one go. But your stack is pretty short with an M of about 5, so this seems like an OK opportunity to pick up some chips (although I'd rather be the first one in with that hand).
  • I think you have to many chips left to push them in. I would either smooth call or fold. It all depends on what the other players left to act have been doing in the past hands. Has it been a fairly tight table or has there been lots of action? If there has been lots of action then I would fold....if its been tight then I would call and fold to a reraise. With everyone left to act behind you, pushing allin is risky. Also keep in mind that if you think that your opponent is strong then there is nothing wrong with folding.
  • I would fold. I don't think you're getting her to fold to a push and you're probably flipping at best. With 5 people left behind you I don't like calling because even if no one wakes up with a hand behind you there's a good chance at least one of the blinds is coming in behind you for the min raise, so there's not going to be many flops you like, and you still don't know if she has a real hand or not. Also stacks aren't deep enough to play this for set value alone. Wait for a chance to be the aggressor.
  • It was a very tight table with most stacks less than mine. The Woman to my left had about 45k. I did what ScoobyD said. My M was low enough with a descent hand and a very short stack to go up against. I pushed allin. The woman to my left with the big stack called after thinking about it for 2 minutes and she had pocket K's. No 8 and i was out. Original raiser folded.
  • I would have done the exact same thing Ron, you can't predict that the players to act will have monsters. You made a good move out of position at the wrong time. Many other times this will result in you winning several chips. I don't fault your play here at all.

  • u shoulda slapped her for taking 2 minutes

No, but you can greatly increase your odds if there is only 1 player left to act instead of 5. Thats all part of the game......the people left to act behind you. Especially when there are short stakes left to act.

I completely agree, thats why I qualified it by saying he was out of position. With an M of 5 unfortunately position becomes an afterthought....

I agree with you here stp, but I also see what Wader's saying. Personally I hate those spots. Ie, short stack, EP with a marginal hand like KQo, ATo, 77, 66, etc. You're torn. If you're called, you're probably dominated, and almost never a significant favourite. With many people to act behind you the odds of this increase. Conversely, the fact that the blinds quickly approaching puts you in even more of a position where you need to make an aggressive move like this. I guess it comes down whether you feel more comfortable pushing a marginal hand like 88 in bad positon or pushing Ax, suited connectors, 2 paint in a more favourable position.
  • I would have folded.

UTG has raised. He has a hand. Whay might it be? Big ace or a pair seem the most likely. You are small favourite or a big dog but, there are a lot of players to act behind you.

It is move in or fold. I can't see limping in this spot. Suppose the flop is Q-7-2 and your opponent makes a standard continuation bet? Hard to play.
