Blind progression going from 3 to heads-up

Came up in a tournament I was involved in recently. Player 1 on Button, Player 2 in SB, Player 3 in BB.. Player 1 is eliminated during hand so we are now heads up between Player 2 and 3. Who is BB and who is on the button? If button advances normally player 2 would be SB and 3 would be BB twice in a row. Is this correct or does the button skip over player 2 directly to player 3 so that he is not BB two hands in a row? Whatever the rule is, can anyone point me to where it is documented? I looked through Roberts Rules but couldn't find it.

  • From http://www.homepokertourney.com/button.htm:

    Player1 (Button), Player2 (SB), and Player3 (BB).
If Player1 is eliminated - Player2 is BB and Player3 is SB and Button.
If Player2 is eliminated - Player1 is BB and Player3 is SB and Button.
If Player3 is eliminated - Player1 is BB and Player2 is SB and Button.
  • Thanks Trev, exactly what I was looking for... There are some diffences in opinions on this, among some very knowlegeable people... Including one who was heavily involved in the Charity casino industry when it thrived here in Ontario....
  • When in doubt just remember that nobody ever has to pay the big blind twice in a row, regardless of who is eliminated or where they were sitting.

That's exactly the argument I used but was really looking for something in writing. Some argued that it may be different in different casino's, anyone know anything about that?

lol..... This never came up with me before since I never get that deep into a tournament, but maybe I will one day..
  • well all i'm going to say is don't get your hopes up for saturday at the ryder...
  • I"ve really never paid that much attention to it, since on line everything is done for you. Tho last Thursday there was a lot of discussion about who acts first etc in a tourney and where the button went to. I have always assumed you can't be the BB twice in a row and positioned the button accordingly. Now trying to explain to someone who acts first preflop and who acts first post flop was an exercise in itself.
  • How's this for a house rule.

At one of Brantford's 40.00 tourneys in late December, I was playing railbird while waiting for my seat at 5-10, and I was watching heads up between the final 2 players. I notice that the button is BB and the other guy is small blind, so I think it may just be a mistake, and it's not really my place as observer to say anything since the players don't. Maybe it's just one hand and they screwed up, but no....it goes on and on.

So after the 4th or 5th hand I say to the tournament director, or whoever the guy in the suit and name tag was at the table, "Why do you have the blinds reversed?", and I'm fully expecting him to give me the deer in the headlights look as if he has no idea what I'm talking about, but instead he says.....

"Yeah, I know it's supposed to be the other way, but we decided it would be better this way. It seems more fair to have the button act last before the flop."

    What???

So, in Brantford, it's more fair to change the rules for a tournament.

Not trying to hijack the thread or anything, but this reminded me of that.
