Point Edward's "Blue Water Classic"

Anyone else playing in this?  3 days of "heats", with the final 30 players on the 4th day.  $500 buy-in + $50.  Me and my friend Mike are playing in Heat # 3 on Sat. Feb. 25, and hopefully one or both of us will make the final 3 tables on Sunday.

80 players/day = $120,000 prize pool.  I am imagining the payout might look like this, but I am guessing:

1st: $36,500
2nd: $26,500
3rd: $15,000
4th: $8,600
5th: $6,300
6th: $4,100
7th: $3,200
8th: $2,100
9th: $1,600
10th: $1,100
11th - 20th: $900
21st - 30th: $600

Anyone played there before?  I've never been.  Also, does anyone have any idea about starting chips/blind structure?

Thanks.

    Blue Water Classic Tournament

Tues. Feb. 21: $100 NL Freezeout. 6pm start.
Wed. Feb. 22: $200 NL Freezeout. 6pm start.
Thurs - Sat. Feb. 23 - 25: Days 1, 2 and 3 of the $500 freezeout. Noon start, every day. 80 players/day, final 10 advance from each day.

You can register by phone using a credit card. There are still like 2 seats left, but that's it.

Let me know if you're going, or if you find out anything about blind structures.
  • Ok so this is what I found out.

2 spots left for Sat. Thursday and Friday the tourney starts at 6 PM and around 10-20 spots left for those days.

The blind structure seemed good as they read it off over the phone. start at 25-25 and increased every twenty minutes for the first 3 hours(25-50, 50-100, 75-150....).

At the 3 hour mark they are 600 -1200 and increase to 30 minute rounds. Sounds like there is alot of play in this.

I am thinking I may play on the Friday as the Sat is my daughters birthday and would not want to be away that day.

I will let you know what I am doing.

  • I'm a Sarnia boy Monday to Friday before returning home to London for the weekend. I was planning on sticking around and checking out some of the action from the rail. There are no Sattelites being run for this one so I can't try and get in the cheap way. If someone wants to bankroll me, I think you'll find my results both impressive and consistent. I never win anything, which becomes impressive when you consider the number of times I've tried.

Anyhow, if there is going to be quite a few forum members around let me know, and we'll organize a forum dinner or something.

    Cheers

Hmmm... not bad.  It's amazing how fast 20 minutes can go in a live game, though.  Maybe 8 to 10 hands.  I guess the question is: how many chips do they start you with?  5,000?

"Impressive and consistent."  LOL.  Nice one...  Hopefully a bunch of forum people show up... a dinner sounds great.
  • Sorry I am out of this one. Life in the way of poker.

  • Anyone who is not playing Friday in this event, dont forget about Casino Windsor's $500 buy in event on Feb 24th at NOON. Its only a 45 minute drive through the US from Sarnia. $550 buy in gets u 5k in chips and 30 minute blind levels throughout.
  • Is it a one-day tournament? And, do they have many seats left? How many players?

Thanks in advance for the info, and thanks for the heads-up.
  • Due to the Point Edward tourney, the Casino Windsor tourney will not sell out. You can call up next week to the poker room and save your spot by phone until 11am Friday morning of the tourney.

Hari from Sarnia won the first event last month.
  • It figures that I have to work OT everytime a good tourney is near my area.
  • I really didn't want to blow this one, because I missed some really good tournaments this weekend to play.   No monkey man visits last night and some timely hands and voila I'm in the finals for Sunday with 33k, just under the 40k average stack.  What a cool structure for the final as well -- the bring down the blinds to 100/200 to start the final 30 on Sunday.  I think this is awesome, especially since I'm driving two hours.

    Gl aces and friends today!

    Cheers

  • Devin,
I enjoy your insights on pokernightlive, and with respect to you's on the Blue water Classic best of luck to ya's. I;ve played there at the Blue Water Casino, LH 3-5 dollar tables. Nice place.
Any way i would surely be there if i had money to buy in.
Instead i'm attending our monthly tourny for our southern Ontario poker club.
Once again best of luck guy's.
  • I'll post more.  Here's my final hand -- I have a stack of 54,000 and in 8'th spot. Blinds 2/4,000

Folded to me an I look down at red queens.  I raise to 20,000 as I want to announce I'm not letting this go, but I want to leave myself some wiggle room if tighty whity wakes up.  He's on a monster stack, underr 21 and having a great day.  Good player.

Short stack pushes in for 21k in hijack seat.  Wacky blind raises to 40,000.  I instantly go all in.

BB shows K8, short stack shows KJ and tighty whity says he folded KT.  Houston, there's no problem.

Flop J88, turn is an 8 and river is insignificant.  IGHN.  Wow, I could have trippled up and been a real contender for top spot.  Well, 8'th spot wasn't bad and I played very well.  I had no monkey man visits.

Tough breaks Devin and Redoak (who played well -- not sure how you busted out though)

When I was walking out, I saw an awesome hand. Tighty whity makes it 20,000 to go on the button and wacko blind (I liked the wacko guy's raisie until he beat me) raises alll-in. Tighty has a real tough time, but I'm sure after seeing the K8 hand he doesn't have too much respect for those raises. Well Tighty calls and shows JJ and wacko blind shows 88. Tighty takes the pot and eliminates wacko. Tighty has a monster stack of around 400,000 and I'm cheering for him. Good young player -- hate to see him with some experience under his belt.

    Cheers

  • Thanks for the reports AA & Lou - great reading.

Question though...what does IGHN mean? (I go home now?)
  • Here's some interesting hands from my tournament.  I go into the final day of the tournament with 33,000 and the average stack is 40,000.   Blinds start at 100/200.

Blinds 100/200.  Tight old guy from EP raises to 800.  I look down at AK in the cutoff and smooth call.  Loose blind calls and three of us see a flop, K26 rainbow.  Tight guy bets 800 and I raise to 2000 and take the pot.

Blinds 200/400.  Deja vu all over again.  Tight old guy from EP raises to 1600.  I look down at AKspades.  I smooth call as does the loose blind (same guy).  Flop comes AQ5 two clubs.  Tight guy bets 1000 and I raise to 3000, loose blind folds and Tight guy calls.  Turn is a 5 (not a club).  Tight guy checks and I bet 8000 and  tight guy calls.  Now, I'm concerned he has AQ, but he didn't come hard at me for a possible flush draw.  River is a brick 7.  Tight guy comes out betting 8000.   I'm confused now.  If make the call and lose, I'm down to 10k.  Ugh.  I'm getting over 4 to 1 on the call, and think it over.   I think AQ is a real possiblilty, but not enough to overcome the odds I'm getting on the call.  So, I call and we chop the pot when turns over AK.  Whew.

Blinds 300/600.  Almost deja vu all over again.  Loose blind guy is in EP and raises to 1800.  Loose aggressive woman (I like her!) smooth calls and I call in the cutoff with AKo strong young guy in the BB calls.  Four see the flop of KT5 rainbow.  Loose EP bets 1000, LAG woman raises all in to 15,000.  I saw her make this move in one of the first hand of the tournament on a straight draw.  I figure she can have KQ, QJ, KT, QT.  But, I think she's greedy and would try more of a trap play with two-pair.  So, I'm confident she's got a pair at most, but I have a dilema in that both the Young guy in the BB and  the Loose EP have big stacks.  They both know I'm tight.  So, I think callling here is the best option, so as not to over commit -- just in case they do something extreme.   I call, they muck and the LAG woman shows QJ for a straight draw.  No help for her and I take a nice pot.

My toughest laydown.  Blinds 400/800. I have around 75,000.  Two limpers to me in the Hijack and I look at A7 diamonds.  I call, as does the tough young guy on the button.  SB completes and we have five seeing the flop of 743 rainbow no diamonds.  Checked to me and I bet 5000.  Tough young guy agonizes and then raises to 21000.  SB thinks for a long time and folds.  BB folds.  Had I thought about this  a little longer, I might have realized what happened.  The betting sequence told me the tough young guy had a big hand.  But, he was visibly worried about the SB's calll.  I need to "trust the force" more often.  When he was worried, I should have realized he was worried about a call/raise by the  SB -- that would tell me he had a pair.  His aggression would dictate a raise by 88-99 for sure -- just  to get the blinds  out.  So, I should  have been able to narrow him down to A7.  Well, I folded because I was too concerned about a set without thinking through "all" the information I had.  So, I fold and he shows A7.  Yuck.  But, I couldn't call him.  However, I could have raised all-in!  Some day, I'll grow some balls.

Dino saw this hand.  Blinds 800/1600.  Tough tricky greek guy limps in MP and  SB completes.  I look at TT in the BB.  Now, I'm thinking I can take the pot here.  However, I need a double up to really compete as I'm around 60,000 (about average).  Then I remember some hands with the Tough greek guy and he, plays alot like limit.  If he limps pre-flop he does'nt fold unless it's a raise, re-raise back to him.  He calls all raises.  So, why not see if I can hit a set and  double up for cheap.   I check.  Flop comes 377.  That's a nice flop and should let me take it there.  I bet 5000.  Tough tricky greek guy calls and SB folds.  Turn is a J.  I check, as my hopes of doubling up are gone and I'm hoping TTGY will give me a free card.  He doesn't and bets 15,000.  He can have a J, a 7 or so many hands that beat me and I know he won't back down.  So, I fold.

Well you guys saw my bust out hand and I go home now.  IGHM.  I think this should change to Goodnight Irene for those  of us who are already home in online tournaments!

    Cheers

  • So I'll give my impression of the tournament.

I played Thursday and made it to the finals. I didn't admire the tournament setup (though I have decent experience with this type), there was little above-the-rim play, but I appreciate that we're getting more tournies lately in our area. I understand that charity casino's are understaffed for events such as these and they need them to wrap up quickly. All in all I had a lot of fun.

I think the tourny really got tough around the edges of the qualifying days. I played for a long time around 17-14 people and then another 2 hours with 12 trying to squeeze into the final 10. It was difficult because with blinds at 2000-4000 and an average stack of 37 000, you don't even have 10 bets! I mean, with one caller the pot is already more than 25% the average stack, lol. My AKo ran into aces, and a top pair call against a short stack's all-in flopped straight took my 66 000 to 23 000. I was in good shape even though I was just over half the average.

On Sunday I was really impressed with my playing and fought to over 38 000. One hand, I'm in the cut-off with TT...UTG (table chip leader) makes it's around 4xBB folded to me I make it 10k, like 4x his bet, he moves all-in I fold. Boom, back to 25k. Avg stack at this point was close to 60k, I have room to wiggle and short stacks on my table are consistently going all-in. I pick-up ATh and move all in hoping to steal some blinds and/or fight a short-stack all-in on the board...I run into kings from the chip leader and IGHN.

I believe that last move was my only mistake during the whole tourny...not because I got out but because I began to lose patience which is something I just don't do. (Earlier with 33k, within a span of roughly 9 quick hands I couldn't get play from AA twice and AKsuited.)

It was nice to meet Magi again and a few other familiar faces. Hopefully I'll see you guys soon in coming events.

    God Bless,
