JJ or 78s

After playing the other night and getting hit pretty hard by 78 twice I am curious if everyone else loves these 2 cards as much as Mark (DrTyroe) and Sklansky?

First game, 4 remaining players I have QQ on BB. I min raise: I need to get some value out of these cards - I dont really care to scare him away for one bet.

Flop is 6910 all diamonds. I made the mistake of choosing my play pre flop - flop is under Q i am all in. Flop shows a A or K - I throw out a half pot bet.

I go all in - Mark asks Mario does Tom have diamonds?" Mario: YES.

Mark asks Wolf - Does Tom have Diamonds? Wolf: NO.

I dont even need to see his cards to know what he has - He calls: I am out.

Second game:

I put Mark all-in with my 77 ( I have him easily covered). Mark has to call because he has 78 - All in call with 78. First card on the flop? 8.

Mark is doubled up.

78 are magical for Mark - So I figured I would pit them against a top 10 hand like JJ.

Just soliciting some comments.

  • Just so you know Tom...

I was playing some .50 / 1 limit last night, and cracked AA and KK a total of three times. THe first time the flop came 4-5-6 rainbow. I put the guy out in one hand, we were heads up and he got beat for about 15 bucks.

The other two times were simply two pairs or tripping up.

    I love 78

  • People hate JJ because it can be a difficult hand to play post-flop. That doesn't mean it's less profitable though. I'd happily take JJ over 87s in the long run...
  • I'll take any hand I can quickly fold.

Any Opportunity I get to fold, I just do it. It prevents me from falling victim to my worst enemy in poker.......me.

    Cheers

    Nicely said!!

Long run, I'll prefer JJ to 87s almost everytime. Not that I wouldn't play 87s in the right situation, but I feel more confident on playing JJ. And I can still toss them without too much remorse when I'm beat.
  • I'll take JJ every time, 78s only works for one nasty dirty whore and that is DrTyore!!!! I think JJ can be a great hand, you just really have to know when to get away from it.....and I'll take 77 against 55 anytime too doh!

Thanks for having us Mario, I played like complete crap and enjoyed losing my money, the pizza more then pade up for it tho!
  • Why am I playing 78s in mid position?

I would take JJ any day in Mid-position; I find JJ is easy to get away from when there are callers behind me and over cards come. Only trouble I get into is if some one has a lower pair and makes trips.

Trouble with 78s is that what happens if you catch and 8 that is the top pair on the board or have 4 to the flush? Some one behind could easily be playing J, J or have the higher flush draw and you are just going to lose.
  • Hey now...

If i'm the only guy on here skilled enough to play 78, so be it. Thanks for your chips guys! :)

    Look lucksack....j/k.

I'd take the JJ or rags over the 78s...but, i'm weak tight...the hand above was comical to be a part of (sorry Tom).
When I play against DrTyore I always check the board to see how 78 is doing...
  • it's tough to play both hands... 78 is usually an autofold for me unless it's suited and i'm in position in an unraised pot, and well JJ is one of those easy hands to overvalue... it's tough to fold it on a board with any overcard, because what if that guy doesn't have that card paired... this is why i would take rags, fold and avoid trouble.
  • I'll go with "rags" - you can guess which ones :) . However:

I'd play 78 to a min raise 4-handed, especially against you. Your a pretty aggressive player, so a min-raise smells like trapping with a big hand. I'd call knowing I'm beat but that I get all your chips if I hit the flop big (which is what Mark did).
  • I just have to say JJ SUCKS!!

I take A2 any day over both those hands, but 78 in Marks hand is pretty deadly.

NO prob Eric it was a fun night.
  • So you're still on that run where you don't want to play any hand that contains a J then? :D

It's a valid point.....is the table weak, not many left, and so on?
  • Is the table weak?

    didn't you see who posted?

  • Hey now!!!

We are on team Kitchener together!!!

Although we are also in the Grudge Match together.

Interesting set of complexities between the Heart Break Kids.

Trevor is right - My min raise is definately a value bet. But with QQ 4 ways - I want value.

I just need to do a better job of getting away from hands post-flop.

Maybe my newly required taste for Omaha 8 will teach me that lesson! But in Omaha Hi-lo 78 is definately junk - although JJ isnt too pretty either.

It will never end. Well maybe J9 against you. LOL!!
  • Deffinitly rags, reason being that if someone has gone 3X BB and i am in mid position with 2 or 3 people behind me.. I am folding no matter what unless I got AA, AK or KK. Id feel horrible throwing away JJ.. but it would have to be done.

Im going to have to disagree.
At this stage I dont care what my opponents have, Im looking to get lucky.
Depending on what level of tourney we are at and my opponents stacks. If the blinds are relatively small compared to stack sizes than I will call with either hand (prefferably the JJ) with 78s if I dont flop two pair I am out with JJ if I flop an over pair I play with extreme caution and watch who decides to lead at the pot. If its the original raiser I can get away from my hand but if its an opponent behind him I might stick around for the ride. The whole idea is to flop that monster and bust someone. But I will not call if its more than about 10% of my stack.

  • yeah ill take the JJ over 78 any day I love pocket pairs.
  • IMO, you have to play Jacks just like 2s. Hard.
  • I like 78 over jj in the right position. With 7, 8 its a mid deck connector you have alot more outs possible, straights, flush if suited, and if your lucky two pair. With jj while still a fairly strong hand it has very few outs if the 7,8 gets a good flop. Its also alot easier to release 7, 8 than jj if you miss the flop.
