Legal poker rooms in Ontario?

I want to know what people out here think of when it's goingto happen. Lets do an over under of 5years. I think it will be over.
I was talking to the former manager of Fundtime Charity Casino, they were the only one that was rewarded a permanent licence back in the day. He thinks it will be under 5 years, that is how i came up with the 5 years for the over under.
If you can also give a reason for your answer that would be cool too.

  • I'm going with the under.

In fact, I believe there's an excellent chance that there will be a legal poker room in Brantford, ON by, let's say, tomorrow.

Anyone care to book my action? :)

Oh, I don't know Scotty ... there might be someone who used to live in Brantford, who could arrange to take your action.

Did I just say that? :D

  • from my knowledge in that sort of thing, i was always under the impression that a "poker room" is only illegal if the establishment is making a profit from it without being licenced from the province.
  • The only "organization" that is allowed to offer gambling (gaming) in Ontario is the government of Ontario. If the government of Ontario wants to open poker rooms..em..umm..wait...oh yeah..they have. Brantford Casino, 2 casinos in Niagara Falls, Rama, Windsor.
  • Then why don't they have it in the biggest city in the province?
The province did award over 40 permanent charity casinos and then stopped them all. And with the explosion of poker why not open more casinos or poker rooms? Why have a huge black market?
I know it is the nature of government to run slow and rarely to do the right thing, but they did award so many permanent casinos and that was around 10 years ago.
  • I have always believed that it would be less than 5 years, however, with the River Room getting busted yesterday afternoon, and the conversations I have had with people in the know(TO cops), I don't know if it will happen anytime soon. I friend of mine is a Kitchener cop and he told me that most people will not run into a problem unless one of 2 things started to happen at the club. Drugs and guns. Now with clubs selling or giving booze, the liqour board is starting to get involved. There is a club in TO that is on the Liqour board radar and they are about to move in.

So now I don't think it will ever happen.

  • I don't think you can really count Rama in on this.. Seeing how it is on native land, I believe, they don't fall under provincial government laws.. or Federal for that matter.. not totally sure,, But would be interesting to find out..

If the clubs that are doing what they should not be doing continue, I doubt you will see pokerrooms becoming legal in five years..

If I remember correctly, the cities had to first OK the establishment of a Casino, and the way Toronto Council was (read Far Left....almost Commie) they said that they did not want one.

  • U mean poker rooms not casinos right?

Thats a hard topic. On one hand the goverment could make alot of money from them. On the other hand it could create alot of problems such as debt (from gambaling) and other social problems. I would like to see some pop up around my area but i will probably take awhile. I say over five years.

The same thing happened in London. Although I'm not totally sure it was the worst thing that ever happened. The stats do show that Casinos do cause social problems that we probably don't need.
