  • there were actually several cartoons that were featured.

    Here is a link:
  • In the spirit of globalization..does anyone else think that this was extreemly insensitive of people to publish this tripe?
I mean....is it funny? not really.
    is it witty? nope.
I'm really really not a religious person, but can you imagine someone drawing jesus up in a KKK outfit in the deep south proclaiming "sorry guys, no more n***ers to burn!" or something of the like.
it's along the same line. It wouldn't be accecptable here, and it is not there. and i personally beleive that these riots are the natural progression.
I'm sure i have more to say, i'll just leave it at that..

Is that even the point though? I thought the point was that the press wasn't allowed to print caricatures of Mohammed PERIOD, for fear of being stoned to death by Islamic fundamentalists. As far as the Jesus reference you alluded to, sure there would be people offended, but the cartoonist that published it wouldn't have to fear being stoned to death because of it.

So every time somebody takes issue with something published, the "natural progression" should be a riot? Sounds perfect...

Was it stupid to publish it? Probably. Does that excuse people from rioting? Hell, no.

The problem is certain groups are using this to fan the flames of hate and to promote their own agenda's, claiming it is not a freedom of press issue but an attack on culture and religion.

I think the drawing and publishing of the cartoons are in poor taste and deeply offensive, but the people rioting and killing over them is worse.
  • The point (IMHO) was more to illustrate how some Muslims have twisted their religion to justify war against other religions.

I'm sure that one could come up with some good ones with Jesus and how the Christian right has twisted the bible to suit there cause.....

    Hobbes

In the story of Cain and Able that after Cain kills Able he is cast out and given the Mark/Curse of Cain.

Many white supremacists use this story to prompt racism saying the Mark/Curse of Cain is black skin making them the cursed people, where the true point of the mark was to protect Cain.
  • in the interest of keeping the peace, I removed the link. I couldn' t help from sheer curiousity to ask what had caused this stir.

Sad. Very sad. Why must we be so tolerant of others' intolerance?

I had a look. I guess I will be killed shortly.

Personally, I don't see anything offensive but then I'm not a Muslim. I think the first one was mildly amusing on a political level. If someone finds it offensive, I guess I can respect that even though I don't understand that sort of reaction. That someone could be driven to violence over it offends me.

I don't get it. But I don't get how one religion can convince people not to eat pork or beef (yummy!) or shellfish (meh), eat fish on Friday or walk more than 73 steps on a Saturday. So much wasted energy. Don't we have better things to worry about?
  • I understand what you are saying scoobyd....i'm saying it's the natural progression because...for as long as i can remember..in the middle east (and this is not all inclusive, but the more radical countries) violence is the way of solving things. If you grow up in BLA culture, and you dont like BLA culture..you grow up watching the grown ups joinnig armies, killing people in the streets, bombing people etc. This placed a target square on the danish (danish right?) world, and like a magnifying glas, intensified it. The first few days, the leaders of these protests tried to keep the peace. The danish publisher didn't help things by not backing down etc.
I'm not saying rioting is the correct way of solving things, but if there was no voice for the people...and in this situation i dont think there is an effective one (there is no pope for islam, or if there is he is not a strong voice on the global field) the rioting is the people saying this is not okay.
Do i think this would happen in the states? Maybe not to the degree it is happening in the middle east, but people have blown up buildings for less.
I just think that there is some justification for it.
  • I just think that there is some justification for it.
And unfortunate choice of words, perhaps. There may be an 'explanation' perhaps but never 'justification', at least in my eyes.
  • I will agree...justification is maybe too strong a word....
