question for newbie

Sorry, this may be a really stupid question. I recently started gaining interest in poker and decided that before I go out and play that I would try to obtain as much information on the game as possible. So I read books, the internet ect............ Now this is my problem, I recently mouved to Russia where it makes it harder to play and learn at casinos due to the language problem, also they seems to play differently here. Instead of playing at a table againts other people you always play againts the dealer (that includes in games of holdem and 7 card stud). Is it worth play only againts the dealer, am I just waisting my time cause all the info that I read are for when you are playing againts other peoples at a table. Hope you understand what I'm trying to ask and Thanks for you help.

  • The whole premise of poker is talking away the advantage the house has in regular casino games, slots , and with smart /patient play having that advantage drift toward your seat. Playing against the house completely defeats that idea. Plus Russsia is not the most corruption adverse area of the world. I would run the other direction very quickly.
  • I'd play online instead in that situation.

  • I am skeptical that you are actually playing heads up Texas hold'em against a dealer who works for the house. My guess is that you are playing a "table game" based on hold'em.

If you are, in fact, simply playing hold'em then you are playing heads up hold'em and all of the usual comments/debates about poker will hold.
  • Well here is what I found out, I went to the casino and observed a game. It seems like normal holdem except that the dealer does not look at his cards. You make your bets (but you cant raise of course), at the end, you show your hand and the dealer show his cards, if you win then you take the pot and your winning is according to what the dealers has. For exemple if the dealer as nothing and the highest card he got is lower then a king you only get back what you bet, but if the dealer as higher then a king and you beat the dealer, you win your bet times a ration which will give you your total amount, I did not figure out what that ration is but I hope that I will soon. I'm going to observe more games in the future, but it seems to me that it is heads up holdem to me. In that case does normal holdem strategies applie to this.

    Thanks for you time.

Sounds like carribean stud to me. Or some variant of it. Either way, it's not poker.

I am sure that if you look around, you will find that there are russian casinos which have real poker. I remember on that documentary (I forget the name of it, but it followed some tournament players around, and Hellmuth made an ass of himself) that some of the european players played a tournament in russia (at least I think it was russia). Of course, russia is a big place, so I don't know if there would be any casinos which offer poker in your area. If not, the online option is always a good one. Pick your favourite site and go with it.

  • This sounds to me (as Dave has already suggested) to be a poker-based table game, along the lines of Carribean Draw, Carribean Stud, Let it Ride, or Three Card Poker.

If there is no betting, raising, calling and folding, this is not poker. Also, if the dealer doesn't look at his/her cards while the game is going, and is using no strategy, this is not poker.

This sounds a lot like the table game "Three Card Poker" which, despite the name, is not something that I would call poker.

If so, this has nothing to do with Holdem. A description of Three Card Poker and optimal strategy can be found here:

    wizardofodds.com/games/threecardpoker.html

In contrast to actual poker, Three Card Poker (along with similar poker-based table games) is *not* a game that a player can beat in the long run.

  • Knowing nothing else about the game described I feel confident in stating: "You cannot beat this game in the long run."
