advice for tourny

I'm plannin to run a tourny
hosting around 40-50 ppl (i found a place that would hold this)
i'm wondering
would 120 buy in for 1500chips would be fair for people's money
if the blinds started at 25-25 and goes up every 30mins

or should i lower the buy in ...
how long should i expect the tourny to go on for if i have 50 ppl in the tourny
7-8 hours?

  • Buy-in and starting stacks aren't really linked.  What I mean to say is, a tournament either has play or it doesn't, and that has nothing to do with the buy-in.  So, if you think that 1500 chips to start, starting at 25/25 with 30 minute levels might be a little aggressive (which it really is), the solution is not to lower the buy-in.  The solution is to either start with more chips, change your blind structure, or change the length of your levels.  Or, some combination of those things.

I assume you would be at 50/100 after only 1 hour of play.  With 1500 to start, this is way too aggressive.

My home tournament starts with 1500 chips.  You might want to consider something more like this (still with 30 minute levels, still with 1500 chips).

       Level          Blinds (small/big)

         1               10/15
         2               15/25
         3               25/50
         4               50/75
         5              50/100
         6              75/150
         7             100/200
         8             150/300
         9             200/400
        10            250/500
        11            300/600
        12            400/800
        13           500/1000
        14          1000/1500
        15          1500/3000
        16          2000/4000
        17          3000/6000

If that seems too gradual, maybe cut out levels 4, 6, 8 and 10.  That would be a nice compromise.  Just my two cents.
