Foul Language at a Table

I know you get penalized at the the WSOP and if I played there I would be sitting out a lot. As some of you may know, I tend to swear when I lose a hand. It is not at a person, just a simple "f*ck me!" or "stupid f*cking Jack". Is this a real problem? Does someone else's language bother you and should I find new variations of the word to use? It's funny, I make sure I don't swear at work (with customers that is) or around my kids or even around my mother. But otherwise the explicitives fly out of my mouth like a Tatantino film.

Thoughts?

  • Oh, I've been known to drop the F bomb a few times. Hell, most of my public school years were spent in the principles' office, being scolded for saying things I heard around home daily...never figured out why I was being reprimanded...I mean, Christ, I heard that bullshit everyday goddamn day!!!

I try to hold my tongue in MOST cases at the table. There are times though that I know I'm done that it slips out. Never had a penalty for it...YET... but I'm sure if I were in a tourney that had such a rule, I would be sitting out the 10 minutes at least once.

Personally, I don't see the problem. Sure, it might offend some people, but seriously, it's simply a word the expresses frustration more often than anything else, and I don't see what all the goddamn poliitically correct bullshit is all about.

    FRAK IT!!!
  • I'm not sure if Andrew meant this to be a big discussion, but I think our words are fairly important. What you say has power (for good or ill), is not easy to erase, and speaks a lot about the speaker. Historically, you can see the power of words through oaths, wars, and literature. Even Biblically, the world was created with just words. Going back to Latin and Greek, the word "word" meant not only "to say" but also "consecrate", which shows how important ancient cultures thought words were.

I personally don't like profanity, and I don't see the point of it. However, it has permeated our culture, and it is so common-place that I would only consider it mildly offensive now (since you simply "stop listening" and don't hear it anymore). While I don't like swearing, I think censoring "7 words" (there's more today, but it was 7 when I was growing up :) ) is ridiculous.

I have heard a lot of very offensive things said at the poker table (and in normal life) that didn't involve profanity at all. If you are going to have a "code of conduct" for speech, I think patterns of speech makes a lot more sense, since you can very eloquently verbally assault or offend someone without touching the "bad list". The problem here is that a subjective rule like I describe is much more difficult to enforce fairly, while a list of words is simple (even if pointless).

Just some thoughts, but I've probably said too much already (got to control my words better :) ).
  • Some good points Beanie. I think we are talking about the same thing more or less.

It's not so much the actual WORDS spoken as it is the MANNER in which they are spoken in. I don't have problem streaming a line of profanity at the drop of a hat, and I don't usually catch myself saying the odd one or two when I find myself faced with a tough decision or situation.

I DO however, have issue with a player demoralizing another with a constant stream of insulting, degrading, and ridiculous comments in a loud, aggressive manner solely meant to antagonize or bully. I won't tolerate that for one second, nor would I expect any player to accept it.

While it might be easier to restrict or forbid certain words, I believe mor emphasis should be on controlling the behaviour of those who constantly belittle other players. I can't remember the pro's name, but I watched an episode of WPT in France awhile ago, and this one player was WAY over the line abusively. Didn't say a single "bad" word, however I think he should have been escorted out of the casino and 're educated' old Vegas style.
  • Interesting points.
I think the use of foul language (for me anyway) is allowable in informal enivornments. But that is my own "code". I don't swear around my friends parents, my in-laws, or people I just met. But if I am at poker table I swear. I have never really considered other people's opinions of the work f*ck or shit. Even here I won't type the full word. However, I will not use words like "Jesus" or other words that hold religious value, since I recognize that it crosses a line with a lot of people (and I don't want to get into a theological discussion, although I am sure Trevor and I could talk about it for hours).

I somehow (and I am sure there must be some analysis that can be done on this) get enjoyment out of swearing at bad cards. I never intend it to be directed at anyone and I have never attacked anyone at the table (for their play). I will wait for more opinions.

Note: I had a horrible session at Brantford many months ago and swore a lot and was never reprimanded by anyone.
  • If I am at a home game with my buddies I will swear like a mother fucker and verbally assault the crap out of a stupid ass fish that sucks out on me. Anywhere else, home game or other I am very polite and will not tap the aquarium at all..
During my day job I will swear and belittle my customers to no end but they know I am mostly joking..
  • I don't swear at people at the table, nor do I swear at the situation, I just let it go.

It's rude, unprofessional and really shows how poor you are at composure, a huge part of being a "good" poker player.

Now if it's just with buddies and you are joking around, whatever. I've done that before, everyone probably has to a degree. Doing it at a tourney though or to people you don't know, I tend to lose a degree of respect for them.

But, that being said, I love people like that, they have made me well of playing poker so. I'm not saying it's frustrating getting rivered, or having a fish suck you out on a low % draw, it happens to me as much as everyone else, and it isn't fun. I don't talk to my mother, my gf, or my work assocaites like that when something comes up that I don't like, so I don't do it to strangers at a game that's supposed to be fun.
