Forum Nemesis

I know everyone here has someone that they consider their nemesis, either due to continued bad beats against you or because you just cannot seem to outplay, outflop, outlast....you get the picture. Perhaps this person is so because they consistently disagree with you here on the forum, that's cool. I think it's important to have someone like this in your life, keeps the competitive juices going and challenges you to constantly re-evaluate how you think, play, react etc.

The distinction of stpboy's nemesis sadly goes to Braad "TwoThree", I can't beat him. Yet.

Who's yours?

  • I hear you STP.  I've had many over the years.  They can beat you, but the minute you believe you have a nemesis they defeat you.  They win the battle.  Every win you have, never seems enough.  Every loss, adds to the theory.

The beautiful thing about odds, is that they have no emotion.  They don't remember the last hand.  They don't think about the next hand.  They only add up over many, many hands.  And, they are always right.

Let your foe "think" they are your nemesis but never believe it.  They go on what I call "I'm invincible" tilt, and will continually give you good odds.  Just take up the offer when it suits you.  Pick your spots.  The odds will ensure you are a winner  in the long run.  And, when he's pumping his fist, remember you will get there way more often so you don't have to get all excited about the few wins.

The reality is that it's hard for you to play on a table where you're not the most aggressive.  This person will have many different faces over the years.  You cannot use more aggression to beat them.   You just need to let them use their aggression to beat themselves.

  • I don't think I have a "nemesis" as you've defined it ("you just cannot seem to outplay, outflop, outlast").  "ItsaMe" Mario probably comes closest as we have had a number of interesting clashes late in a tournament.  He's outplayed me a few times, but he's also gotten pretty lucky other times (like 1 live card hitting quads :( ), but I have yet to beat him.  However, I don't consider him someone I can't outplay, it's just a matter of which one of us is on our game that day (and getting lucky).  With no disrespect to anyone I've played with, I don't think there's anybody I can't outplay if I'm on top of my game and the cards aren't against me.  My biggest nemesis would have to be myself, since I've gone out of a tournament too many times making a PERFECT read and then ignoring it (or making a bad play based on correct information).

Instead of nemesis, what about favorite opponent?  Mine would have to be "DrTyore" Mark.  For some reason, we keep getting at the same table in tourneys, we've also played a lot of SnG's together, and we have ended up HU more times than I can count.  I can't say one of us has a distinct advantage over the other, but when we play each other, odds are one of us will knock the other out (the question is only who). That makes the juices flow since once we're seated together, I know one of us is going to be looking for a side-game soon :)
  • I have to say I have a couple nemesisses... wait.. nemesii? Nemeesis?

regardless.. my top nemesis "new school" is beanie42... he doesn't let me get away with anything, and it's ALWAYS forcing me to play my "A" game or pay him off.

my top "online" nemesis (that I know) seems to be westside8, that bugger doesn't let me get away with anything, or he runner-runners me!!

my "cash game" nemesis is TNORTH Tom - though we've not played together much, that 10-4 still hurts.

my "anti-nemesis" is Zithal Rob, since we never seem to play together

and finally my "all-encompassing" nemesis is EASILY Itsame Mario... we will compete against each other in EVERYTHING... IRRATIONAL RETRIBUTION!!! :)

LOL - I feel the same way. I think the only time we've been at a table together in 3 months was at Xmas Madness. That must be it, Rob's like Santa, and only comes out once a year. Or maybe he's just "pulling a Shannon"? :D
  • I think Mario would qualify. Although at the last Bristol we didn't clash, in previous games we seem to a lot. I think I am 3-2 (on the losing end) against him.

    Bastard.
  • Well after the game last night in the Chinguacousy Hill Poker League for me it would have to be STR82ACE.

It always seems that towards the end of a game he is always on my right or left and we both get good cards at the same time, I give him my chips gives and he gives them back. He gives me his chips and then I give them back, but he always seems to get one better on me.

    Why couldn't I have had 200 more????
